hi everyone,

unfortunately i had the nerve wracking horrible experience of bringing one of my gliders to the er vet. He's home now and safe and getting better by the second but if anyones interested he had to be x-rayed and i have his x-rays on cd and if someone can tell me how to post them i will they're pretty interesting, although i'd rather not have had to get them. poor baby. i tried to attach them to this but i dont know if it'll work but we'll see!

Jaclyn, what was your glider diagnosed with? I can see the xray but I can't read it. If you could point out the interesting bits for us uneducated folks we'd appreciate it smile And sorry that you had to take him in frown

hi! that was dumb of me i should have probably posted what he had. This morning he within 5 minutes of putting him in my front pocket and going about my normal routine with my other cages and gliders started making this crying/crabbing noise and within 15 minutes it was almost constant I called someone and they said vet asap so i bundled him, my emergency kit, binder of health and med records, a travel cage in case, and put him in his pouch and rushed to my emergency vet. i must have looked like a crazy person walking in there with all my emergency kit stuff, fleeces, and binders but i was def a little panicked. Anyhow, after an ultrasound and the x-rays the vet found he had an obstructed urethra and it was obstrocuted with a "mucuos plug" which couldnt be explained but from what i gathered from it its the largest dark spot near his bladder, its hard to see the obstruction i guess because his bladder was swollen and painfully full according to the vet. i dont know all the ins and outs but i def thought itd be interesting for people to see glider x-rays.

Ah, that makes sense. I'm not familiar with glider xrays but it did look funny to see the black voids in with all the distended part. I wasn't sure if that was normal for glider guts or not. Poor little guy! I bet it would hurt a lot if you couldn't go pee! Did the vet have an in-office procedure done, or meds, or what? Must have been quick if he is already all better. Good job on getting him to the vet quick and knowing your glider! He is lucky to have such a great mommy.

thanks!! he had a couple things done. they sedated him and had to put a tiny needle into his urethra to relieve the pressure and the vet told me they removed over 1 ML of fluid and i guess she said that was a lot so they kept him sedated and for a while and stimulated him until he passed the blockage and urinated on his own. they gave him sub-q fluids, pain meds, and baytril an antibiotic which they sent home with me. they gave me the option to keep him there overnight in an incubator but i decided to bring him home and put him in my own incubator and hes eating and drinking on his own now which the vet said as long as he was eating within 2 hours hed be alright. we're going to our normal vet tomorrow or the next day probably for a follow up. but let me tell you he does NOT like the incubator so hes on a heating pad resting on stomach he will not stay in there i dont know why but hes def warm so ill do what i have to do

Kudos to you!!!! Emergency medical kit, med history, incubator, vet already acquired, vet fund.....You did it all! Had you not had the above, he would have suffered horribly!

He's comforted by being close to you. Some of my gliders, when under the weather, want to be on me 24/7. Roo is under vet care right now and will literally spend from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m., on me. I try to put him in his cage and he nyitches for me. He'll eat and drink while under my shirt or in my bra, coming out only to potty.

Try putting some fleece blankies that you've worn, in the incubator. Maybe if it smells like you, he'll stay there.

Rather than a heating pad, the warmth of your skin is safer and sufficient enough to keep him warm. Hold him next to your skin or in your bra, with a fleece blankie or two over him. He'll be plenty warm enough.

Great observing and caring for! thumb

I'm totally impressed with the way Jackie takes care of her babies. She is exceptionally well prepared, and is very observant towards the changes in her babies.

Keep up the good work, Jackie! I'm so glad you were on top of things and took Bella in right away. hug2
