NOT for the use in or substitution in any current recipe DEFINITIONS (first )Agave nectar is a sweet syrup produced by heating the sap of a agave plant.(allaboutagave.com) Honey is a sweet, viscid fluid produced by bees from the nectar collected from flowers, and stored in nests or hives as food. (dictionary.com) Maple Syrup is a syrup produced by partially boiling down the sap of the sugar maple or of any of several other maple trees.(dictionary.com) THE WILD GLIDER EATS Plant products such acacia gum, eucalyptus sap and other nectars make up the majority of this seasonal diet. Sugar gliders eat manna in the wild. Manna is a crusty sugar left from where sap flowed from a wound in a tree trunk or branch. (sugar-gliders.com) In the wild, the sugar glider diet consists mostly of gums and saps from trees, nectar, and insects. They are also known to eat eggs and small invertebrates. (thepetglider.com) MY QUESTIONSSo with the above information (and your experience/ knowledge), which is the better and WHY? Agave and Maple are both directly from the plant but processed by us to make it a syrup. Honey is directly from flowers and processed by bees (more natural because nature does it rather than a stove, yes, but is it all that different?) Wouldn't sugar gliders prefer sap (like products) from a tree? Wouldn't the nutrients in Agave and Maple be closer in range to those found in plants wild gliders munch on? Please note again NOT for substitutions just research

I think the issue with this is just what you pointed out: the maple sap and agave nectar are cooked down, not eaten in their natural state. I can tell you from personal experience, maple SAP does NOT taste so yummy. LOL And I have also tasted an Agave plant and the acacia gum powder that is available to us for our gliders, also not so yummy. The acacia gum was in fact quite funky tasting.
Whoever decided to call them "sugar" gliders was the one who led us all to believe that gliders like all their food sweet. Mine like honey on ocassion, but to me it's like giving them candy. I add it to thier food because of all the nutrients and natural enzymes and stuff that is in it. Pretty good stuff, but it would still be good FOR you if it wasn't yummy.

I am no expert in this area, but is 4gm sodium a lot?? If it is, then I know that would be bad, due to the ease of dehydration in such a small animal... That's all I got

That's all I got Sari, I think you meant mg and not gm. LOL The difference is HUGE girl! (1 gm = 1,000 mg) At any rate, keep in mind that those numbers are for whatever they consider to be a "human" sized serving. Probably anywhere from 1-3 tablespoons. So the gliders would be getting a LOT less of those nutrients at a time.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the numbers quoted above are for 1 oz of each liquid. They have nothing to do with human versus something else, it is just how much of each vitamin, mineral etc. is in a consistent unit of measure.

Have you talked to your vet about using papaya puree in the BML mix? BML already has so much calcium in it, they shouldn't need the extra amount in papaya I wouldn't think. And yes the amounts quoted above are for a 1 oz portion...they are not listing a % of RDA (recommended daily amount). Boy I wish we had some RDA's for sugar gliders, it would make this whole diet thing a LOT easier on everyone!

Just trying to see if all that matters and what thoughts users had on it.
