Acacias are in bloom so I decided to try and give my babies a few flowers. At first, they looked surprised but ate it after a while. Now, they just grab the flowers from my hands and eagerly eat them.
Have you tried to feed acacia flowers?

ganesh

How cool <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />, I'm sure they loved them. I haven't fed Acacia flowers yet, but I do have some plants growing (they are tiny right now as I just planted the seeds a few weeks ago)and can't wait until I can offer them to the kids.

I'm sure they will love it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I also have a eucalyptus plant but it's too small and almost died so I have to wait a little before I start giving the leaves to my babies <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

These flowers are a part of there natural diet in the wild. They strip the bark and eat the sap from the acacia tree. They also eat the manor that forms on the branches. I think the manor is some type of fungas that grows on the branches. Mine love stripping the branches and leaves. Acacia are found right throughout my neighbourhood where the wild gliders live. They are a hardy plant to grow.

Hello Jett
I agree that the Acacia gums, stems, bark, seeds, etc, are extremely important to wild gliders - my research shows they do not eat Acacia flowers, unless they are extremely starved - Acacia flower consumption is not normal for them.

I hear from Peter, that he contacted you with an invitation to meet him - have fun!

does anyone know where i can get non-toxic/pesticide-free acacia branches in the US? I have a few trees growing around my neighborhood but i'm afraid the car exhaust fumes they may be absorbing will be toxic to my baby.

Hello
You are exactly correct in your concerns for toxic fumes, No one should NEVER EVER use any plants near freeway, highways, etc for that exact reason!
I cannot give up all my secrets (lol) as I have for several years, grown my own Aussy flora for my <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s - but, you could try checking with local zoos & asking questions like where do they obtain their browse for their animals!
I do know that the San Deigo zoo has huge amounts of euc's for their koala's - they have to & If I remember correctly it cost them somewheres in the area of $40.000.00 yearly - ouch!

I have a friend named Mike, who owns a nursery
Australia Plants Windmill Outback where you can obtain Aussy flora - seeds & live plants & I told him years ago that people would come & Mike had absolutely know idea what a <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" /> was! I sent pics & sent info - he then posted the info about <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/littleglider.gif" alt="" />'s & their native flora & went looking for more info from OZ - I do not agree thou with all that is posted
I have also sent many macropod owners to him who are also searching for grasses & browse.

I would add that not all species of Acacia or Eucalyptus are compatible with a glider's biology. There are literally HUNDREDS of species, of which gliders (koalas, etc.) will only eat or make their homes in a very few. Some foreign species could be toxic to them, as eucalyptus is to us, were we to eat it (that is why products containing it, such as Vicks, say to contact a poison control center if ingested). I would thoroughly research species of tree/plant before you feed it for that reason.

And some might say...well if it was toxic, they wouldn't eat it, would they? Here is a parallel...cats have lots of fun with catnip (in the mint family)...it won't hurt them. A glider will eat/play in it if you offer it...and it WILL kill them. Since we aren't in their native land, and many of our species are different...all I really want to say is please use caution and common sense.

So is there a listing of which species are acceptable, or should I just assume if it originates in Australia that it is safe? I would like to order from the Austrailia Plants Windmill Outback but have no idea which species of Acacia or Eucalyptus to order. Can anyone help?

There are lists of the safe plants from Oz in this thread, on also in the one linked in the thread.

Mike at Outback nursery is a very nice man to deal with. I have several different species growing right now (but they are nowhere near ready to offer to the gliders <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />).

There is also another site called Forest Farm that has young safe plants. I'm waiting on a shipment from them his week, but they too were really good to talk with. Their shipping is high but that is only so that they can send you healthy plants. I think the rates go up after June 10 because of summer heat.

Anyway... good luck in your research and let us know how you fair out!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thank you so much! I am a total newbie to suggies... just got three joeys 4 days ago and I am becoming more confused by the moment. I really want to do my best for my little sweeties but sometimes it's hard to really know exactly what the "best" is! Anyway, I appreciate all the help I can get <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I've got the chance to live in an area where there are lots of woods and not too much contamination (there will always be a little but there's not much I can do except thoroughly wash the flowers before I give them to my babies <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.
