This is very confusing to me-- I just asked a question earlier today about wanting to know if people take their gliders to glider gatherings/events.It has been posted that some people do take their gliders to these-- that means people are exposing their gliders to others people. What is the difference in that verses not doing a quarantine period? Who is to say that the glider I bring is not sick without my knowledge and now everyone else that brought their gliders have exposed theirs to my sick one... but yet when introductions is brought up so many people are adamant about you must wait the 30 days or you are breaking a major RULE.Hope this explains my confusion.

This is something I wondered too, before my first gathering. I do bring a couple of gliders but they don't leave the hotel room. If I handle other people's gliders, I make sure I change clothing and wash, before holding my own again. Some people bring hand sanitizer. When I get back home, I do fecal testing once a week for 4 weeks, just to be on the safe side.

There really is no difference Teresa. It's just a personal choice people make - some owners feel just fine about bringing their gliders around other gliders and even letting them interact. Some owners don't feel comfortable exposing gliders to any POSSIBLE bacteria or parasites that might be floating around in other gliders. I'm not sure where I stand on it, actually!

I've never attended a gathering, though I hope to attend the NWSGG this year. I won't be bringing my gliders for the exact reasons you've stated.

This is why if I ever do get a chance to go to a gathering, my Beloved Arwen would not be getting touched. I may add at this point that she doesnt like other people much anyway so we are both happier with her safe in my bosom.

I know you are all so upset about not being able to pet her, but her needs first you know smile

I am always very careful about letting my pets interact with other people, and always carry hand sanitizer on me just in case.

My hubby is just the opposite, lets everyone pet Frodo. He just likes the attention (both of them).

At the gatherings, do people let the gliders interact? or is it usually just the humans with other gliders? Just how catchy are some of the things we all worry about.

I will also add, that just petting a glider is different than letting 2 gliders play in a cage together when it comes to transferring of bacteria/parasites, dont you think?

Let me try to explain this one to you by examples, Teresa:

MoJo has been in my world for 8 years now (already!)...he's the "social" little man that I've taken to Boy Scout meetings when I'm invited to discuss a different/challenging kind of pet to be owned by. He knows me very well & will allow petting by a bunch of "strange hands"...he's very familiar with both me & my husband, will jump from him to me, very outgoing kind of personality.

Makwa is at the other extreme: I've only had him for 2 months, he has psychological "issues" because of his history as I know it (I'm home #5 that he's had the past 3 years; wonder WHY he has "issues"? dunno I don't...) and NOBODY (not husband, not my best glider buddy here in town) is invited to even TRY to touch him!

Fast forward to my plans for the year: When the SISS comes in June, I'll be bringing Makwa with me....and probably another pair that I haven't made the final decision on. Makwa comes because he needs to be acquainted with the concept of traveling...he needs to learn the fact that I will NOT be giving him away, he'll hang around with me the whole weekend, and he'll be coming back HOME with me! mlove I won't be allowing him to be petted by ANYONE because I don't want anyone to get hurt, bit, etc. The mellower pair will be coming along so they can be my "demo babies" for e-collars and e-jackets. If people want to hold and pet them, that'll be fine....HOWEVER, I will request that a solution of Nolvasan be used for washing hands before my nod will be given. (This stuff will kill staph, strep, e coli, and several other germs that hand sanitizer can't TOUCH) Not that any of my babies have "health issues", I'd just like to KEEP it that way.

Gliders carry several germs in a "dormant" state...the stress of permanent rehoming can wake up these germs. That's why I add 1/8 teaspoon of yogurt to a new glider's dish for the first week they're here....the "good" bacteria in yogurt helps replace what the stress of moving might kill in a glider's system. At a gathering, the gliders may also stress a little from the strange smells/sounds of the motel room but they still have SOMETHING (namely myself) that's familiar to them so they don't stress as badly.

Oh......just to clarify one other thing: WE NEVER LET GLIDERS PLAY WITH EACH OTHER at a gathering! That would be inviting a total disaster. I don't let my gliders "run around" the motel room on purpose either...who knows what kind of bug killer was sprayed in the room yesterday? or WHAT was in the room last week? If somebody ESCAPES.....well, that's where the mad scramble comes into play, doesn't it? roflmao

(knocks on wood before typing this out) I've been to MANY gatherings with my babies...and haven't had a health issue yet. HOWEVER, when I go to certain places I know I have to take certain precautions...I also take a bottle of "home" water with me for washing glider dishes or whatever.

I hope I've clarified this to a certain degree. Like AngelicJess said, it's a matter of personal comfort levels. I personally am cautiously comfortable.

So does cross contamination come only from touching? If I had my gliders in a bonding pouch on me and you had yours on you-- could they get parasites or anything like that without us actually touching each others gliders or without them have direct contact with each other?
Where do your purchase Nolvasan? Thanks for the info everyone has shared so far-- I am learning smile

I don't think you'd have to worry about parasites, I believe that would take direct touch.. I think the only thing to worry about is germs like an illness.. idk I don't know much on the subject as I haven't been to a gathering.

Most often, cross-contamination comes from touching: me touching my gliders, then touching yours without washing my hands...OR letting your gliders walk on my clothes & mark me then letting my own gliders walk on me, marking as they go. There ARE airborne contaminants but I'd think that your glider would be VISIBLY ILL and you'd be onto something happening...so I'd think.

And the Nolvasan (guess I'll be buying the "Surgical Scrub" which is safe for use on human skin) is online at Amazon.com for less than $25.00....there's also a disinfectant version for scrubbing cages with, but it's got a mile-long set of precautions ("wear long sleeves, rubber gloves, goggles", etc etc). Hmmmmmmm, wonder if THIS is the stuff used when gihardia is diagnosed. (I'm still learning too, Teresa....8 years later!)

Denise, is this the same thing as chlorhexidine? Would Hibiclens Antiseptic Liquid Skin Cleanser work just as well?

The SUGAR Group's annual gathering gives everyone in attendance the opportunity to have a free wellness exam (with fecal testing) the day before the gathering. This is one way to cut down on any possible sharing of parasites or disease. Unfortunately, outbreaks do happen, so it is up to you as an owner to look out for your own babies.

Most of the time people bring their gliders and keep them in their hotel rooms, bras or bonding pouches. Gliders are not just all wandering from person to person and interacting with each other.

Precautions are great, and it is only up to you how much or how little you want your gliders exposed to the outside world and other people.

I really need to invent something for the extreme glider owners and get a patent on it.

Yes, Connie, anything with a 2% chlorhexadrine content will kick the butts of ANY germs (so I'm being educated by the resident vet tech student who's learning from the local vet school). If Hibiclens has that magic ingredient to the level mentioned above, then my answer would be "yes".

And Sherri, you have fun with your invention honey! hug2 When you get it dialed in and are ready for a "guinea pig", let me know! wave

Ok in reading this I wanted to confirm. I am very excited about my gliders coming in two weeks as are a lot of my friends and family who want to see my new pets. For the first two weeks I am not really letting anyone see them or even touch them but myself so they get more familiar with me. I plan on having anyone that wants to touch them wash their hands first with the Hibiclens as I already have a bottle of it. (side note - CVS sells the Hibiclens (surgical wash) 8 oz for around $20) Should I wait longer before I let anyone else try to touch them? I know I need to read up on the bonding process which I will be doing this week!
