Hello everyone, I know it's been a long time since I've posted but I know have 16 gliders to take care of, 2 amazon parrots, a rot and 2 new grand sons. I have a question that I hope someone, I know someone here, can help me with. My one glider had triplets, boy was I excited!!! 2 girls and a boy that I have names Zoey, Zelda and Zeek. They opened their eyes on Tuesday of this week and one of the females is blind. Is there anything special that I need to do for her? I know a lot more attention and love, but is there anything else that anyone can help me with?

What makes you think that the little girl is blind? Considering that she just opened her eyes 4 days ago, unless there is a real obvious defect with her eyes, I wouldn't be quick to conclude she's blind.

There is absolutly no color to her eyes, if you put something infront of her she doesn't see it and she can only find her mom if she is close or she can feel her.

Are her eyes white then?

The not responding to things right infront of her isn't too odd for a young joey, neither is their confusing as to where mom is. I have an 8 week old joey that still will try and latch on to anything to nurse and he can see just fine...

Yes, her eyes are compleatly white, there is no color at all. Other than that she seems to be perfectly healthy. The other 2 joeys will try to hide if the light is on and I have them out but it doesn't bother her.

As with most living things, they learn to live very well with defects and she'll do much better than you might think. She may not be able to see her mother, but I'll bet you she knows right where she is. She might not be coordinated enough yet to run straight to her, but she can smell her a mile away.

I have a young niece that is profoundly deaf. It makes me want to bawl thinking about how her life will be....guess what? It doesn't bother her in the least bit. She gets frustrated sometimes, but mostly at US for not understanding HER....LOL You wouldn't believe how keen her other senses are....

One time, my brother who lived in the same house with her had gone away for a few days....he came back in the middle of the night and nobody knew he was home...she came out and told us he was home and we were like, "no he's not baby" and she said, "oh yes he is cuz the coffee pot is on"....DUHHH....LOL he's the only one at the time who drank coffee!! Sure enough, he was in the shower. We had been in and out of the kitchen and never even noticed the coffee. She does that stuff all the time and she acts like WE are the ones with a disability and sometimes, I think she may just be right!!!

lol! How cute. There is so much you could learn from disabled people. And it's so funny how they learn to read your lips sometimes. You have to be careful what you say.

You are NOT kidding. That one is smart as a whip and she takes in things that most of us don't even pay the slightest attention to.....it's eery sometimes even. She is SO in tune with what goes on around her.

I think this little baby is going to get along just fine. They have such a keen sense of smell and I'll bet as it grows and becomes more coordinated, it'll be bouncing all over the cage like the other gliders! Keep us posted because I'm very curious to see how it does.

Thank you all sooooo much!! That is the cutest story. It made me realize things that I take for granted and now I have a different outlook on this little girl. I know she'll be ok, infact out of 16 gliders she's probably going to be the most spoiled, and believe me they are ALL spoiled rotten, lol I've named her Zoey and now my daughter wants her. I've had gliders for about 6 years now and she never really wanted anything to do with them, she's 22.

I've always said that I like animals better than people, but being a part of this board makes me appriciate all of you! Thank you all soo much for your help and support with this and all of my other posts!

Well, I just thought I'de update everyone on Zoey. She's going to be just fine!!!!! I caught her climbing around the cage last night. I put her back in her pouch with her brother and sister and she climbed back out. She was even climbing across the top of the cage. Zeek, her brother, is her protector.LOL He hovers over her when anyone gets near them and crabs at you. It's so cute.

Ah, see..there ya go. She'll learn to compensate just fine. I just wouldn't add too many things to her cage or take things away suddenly....

Well, here's the update on Zoey.

She is a PISTOL!! She is the bravest glider I have. I don't want to undermind her being blind, but she is fantastic. She is very friendly and outgoing. The only thing being blind has done is she will never be able to glide. Because she is blind she can't tell that it is daytime and she comes out of her pouch all day, she LOVES being held and cuddled but she is sooooo ornery! She will bite on my daughters watch and pull on it like a puppy. She is eating all the time and growing so fast. Everyone adores her and I think she gets more attention than the other gliders. Thank you all for your help and support with all of this.

I am so glad to hear your baby is doing so well. One question is she completely blind in both eyes or is just one eye being white? Please post pictures of this little sweetheart when you can. Would love to see her.
