I am hoping to hear from any of you who have ever had a glider diagnosed with a malabsorbtion disorder of any type (except parasites).

What was the diagnosis?
What symptoms did you notice?
And, what treatment was prescribed? Was it effective?

You are asking for diseases that prevent the asorbiton of nutritents in the small intestional track. Correct?

For now... I have have only had experience with three sugar gliders with intestional disorders in my fourteen years of experience with them.

Glider #1) Blocked bile ducts from the Gall Bladder to the Liver.
Glider #2) Ruptured Gall Bladder that led to septis to internal organs.
Glider #3) Cancer of the liver with enlarged Gall Bladder.

Glider #2 died at the vet's office during exam. Glider's #1 and #2 I had put to sleep to prevent further suffering. All three had necropsies done.

Glider #1 refused to eat but drank excessively large amounts of water. Abdomen was grossly distended. Glider showed no discomfort. Ultra Sound was done with results revealing blocked bile ducts. Necropsy... food still in stomach but unable to go any further due to blockage.

Glider #2 severe weight loss which was mostly contributed to dehydration and lack of ability to eat. This glider was very ill and was found at the bottom of the cage.. cold.

Glider #3 severe abdominal enlargement, gross odor from body fluids. Food in stomach as this glider was still eating well. Glider showed no signs of being ill. vet wanted to do a round of antibiotcs but I refused having the glider treated as I did not want him to suffer needlessly from a ruptured gut. He was put to sleep. Necropsy DX was Cancer with enlarged Gall Bladder.

The illnesses of these three gliders was not noticable till the diseases were too far advanced.

With humans... we feel pain which will send us running to the doctors office. With Sugar Gliders... the illness is hidden till it is in the advanced stages. And during that time that my three gliders were ill... they, I am sure, had severe abdomal pain that I was never aware of.

I am a firm beleiver in not prolonging life if it means the animal or person must continue to suffer needlessly when there is no cure. Death is not something to fear. It is a part of life.

Glide free my babies.

Val, I hope someone else can chime in and offer more as to what you are asking. I do know there are a few here on GC who have had gliders with Cancer. You may want to contact Sheila and Anitia Totty as they do not frequent Glider Central much for more info.

Thank you Judie.

I'm aware of cancer diagnosis and the SUGAR group has quite a bit of data from cancer patients (though we could always use more). I was hoping that there might be someone out there that has had a glider diagnosed with something else. Cancer certainly can cause malabsorbtion (especially lymphosarcoma). There are also many other causes of malabsorbtion, including metal toxicity, enteritis, parasites, viral infections, genetic abnormalities, etc, etc.
