I just wanted to let you all know this story in case it can be of any help to anyone...

About a month ago my husband and I were going to attempt to file Eddy and Flo's claws. I clip my own cats and all 12 guinea pigs so I just knew I could send a file across these little bitty hands in just a matter of seconds. We go into the bathroom which is the only 'glider-proof' room in the house right now, I sit on the toilet and put their sack in my lap. Gary was standing ready as he was the one holding while I filed. I reached in and got a glider...turned out to be Flo. She is our sketish glider. Gary held her in his hand, I went to take the first hand and realized that Flo wasn't putting up the normal fight she usually does to get away. She was making funny faces as well. I told Gary something was wrong. I took her in my hand and she was real weak and wobbly. Her body was slightly convulsing and her eyes were going glassy. I started rubbing her back rapidly trying to get her to respond. No luck. I put my thumb on her chest and her heartbeat was extremely weak. Within seconds, she was lying flat in my hand, no heartbeat, no breathing and her little hands were fisted. Carefully I gave her mouth to mouth and rubbed her chest. No luck. I tried it one more time with success...I got her heartbeat back and her eyes blinking. If I had to time how long I had lost her it was probably less than 15-20 seconds. Owning as many guinea pigs as I own, I know with small animals if you don't catch them quickly you will lose them. I held her in my hands and rubbed her and talked to her. I gave her a mealworm because that always excites her. She only held it in her hand. My husband was running around frantically trying to get the vet on the phone. She rode around in my hand for a good 5 minutes and all of a sudden got antsy. I sat her up on my shoulder and she ate her wormy and began playing with my eyelashes like she always has. We decided to forget the glider manicures and I put them both back in the cage. Within 10 minutes of the entire ordeal you couldn't tell anything ever happened to her. She was running in her wheel and jumping all over the cage. I take her to the vet. The nurse and I get her out to weigh her with not much trouble. The doctor comes in, gets her out, she runs down his arm, jumps to the floor...I try to get her from one side, he tries from the other. She runs to the center of the room and starts acting just like she did that day. Almost like she was choking, fisted up again and flattened out spasing slightly. The doctor said 'is that what she did?' He picked her up, calmed her down, listened to her heart, checked her eyes and just talked to her. 1 of 3 things. Calcium deficiency which we know is not it because they get it every day. Too much sugar, not enough protein which we knew wasn't it either because he knows what I feed them. Seizures which is what it was. Flo cannot be put in over-excited situations. Eddy is a big fat squirrel so he could care less! But now Flo has a medical alert on her file to make sure she is kept calm. We can take them out to play in the bathroom like normal as long as I let her come out on her own and let her do her own thing while she's out. The vet said I did exactly what I needed to do to bring her back that day. So if any of you experience anything like this...the symptoms are: what appears to be choking, their little tongues will pop in and out; their little hands will fist up; you'll see small spasms across their entire body. She died on me and I got her back. All the doctor had to do was hold her in a towel and rub her. How lucky can I get?

Thank you for posting this. I know it had to have been a very traumatic experience for you but by telling us it may help gliders in the future if this happens to them by letting their owners know what to do and giving a good visual description of what happened and what to look for.

Oh, how dreadfully awful that must have been. Can the vet give her any anti-seizure medicine? I am so glad you got her back!

I'm so glad you stayed calm and saved her! It's a terrible feeling to see one of your babies in trouble. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

[:"green"]What a relief that you were able to resuscitate her. Thank you for the background information & for the detailed description of a seizure. I'm sure it will help people in the future to know what is happening... and it will probably save a few glider's lives, too.

I do want to make note of one thing, though... regular calcium supplementation does not necessarily rule out HLP. Last winter, my oldest glider, Pika, came down with HLP, even though she was getting plenty of calcium in her diet. Apparently, the calcium was not getting absorbed into her bones as it should due to the fact that she is a picky eater & was only eating her proteins at night (which was how she was getting her calcium supplementation). Xrays revealed that she had HLP, but bloodtesting revealed elevated levels of calcium in her bloodstream... Her diet has now been changed over to BML so that she can no longer pick & choose what to eat. She is back to full health again but we keep a very close eye on her to make sure she doesn't have a relapse.

Oh My! What an awful experience for you. Lots of hugs sent from hubby and myself. I hope your little one is ok now and well on the way to complete recovery. Thanks for posting the info. I'm sure it will help a lot of people in the future.

Oh my dtitans I am so sorry you went through all that but thank you so much for sharing that with us. I think that is just what might have killed my one female sugar glider, how you said your Flo was is just how my poor girl was when I found her. Her fist tight and all. I didn't get to her in time she past away, but now I think I can say this must have been what took her from me.

Funny you should say this. The doctor told me that he could do bloodwork on her but the success rate in getting blood from a glider (in his experience as well as the other exotic vet) was about 70%. That wasn't high enough for me. Our main fear with attemtping bloodwork and sedating her was the obvious seizures. We didn't want to risk it.

I hate to get on this next subject because I know a lot of you all will completely disagree with what we feed them but...we have one bowl of the dried pellets, fruits, veggies and mealworms (wax worms from time to time) and the other bowl has their other food in it. Both bowls are sprinkled with calcium. My vet said when I get the mealworms from PetSmart they are normally starved. He said to put a piece of apple or potato in with them and sprinkle it with calcium as well. So we know she's getting it in one form or another. She's a little mess! I was playing with them in their cage last night and once you take your hand out of the cage, she starts doing tricks for wormies. She does back flips and it is hilarious. She's doing fine. I just keep a close close...very close eye on her!

Thanks for all your thoughts. I'm very glad I was able to pull her back. Not only would I have been crushed losing my Flo in my own hands...I think of what would have happened with Eddy. He could have died of a broken heart if we had lost her. I can't handle that thought.

You're wonderful for sharing this experience. You never know when it could happen to one of ours.

I suffer from time to time with Petit mal seizures but would still probably go into panic mode if it happened to one of my cherished pets.

Thanks again so, so much for sharing your story.

We have one, Lyah, who goes into stress induced seizures every time she is handled. So we don't handle her except for nail trims (and usually it takes about 15 minutes before she starts coming back around)...she goes stiff, and completely catatonic, and her arms/legs shake. She's done this for the two years we've had her. She is also terribly overweight, thinking every meal will be her last (she was almost starved to death when we got her, and her nails had never been trimmed as far as we could tell. Just so you know-there are others out there, and you're not alone with one like that.
