That's how they communicate; they are talking to each other.

I would refrain from giving them a treat every time they bark and you go check on them. If you do they will barking at 1 am for treats.

My gliders bark when they hear something they feel they need to comment on. They bark when the sprinklers come on out side their room and when my son's alarm clock goes off when he has to go to work in the wee hours of the morning.

My Houdi seems to bark when he wants me. Lulu, I'm not sure. Sometimes she goes into her pouch and barks, so I think she wants Houdi to come to bed.
Now, I also think that they bark when the cat is walking around. And I think the cat has decided to try to use this to his advantage. When they bark at night, I get up to check on them and then I turn on a dim light. The cat has caught on to this. The last time this happened, I went out there and the cat jumped up on his feeding table and started begging for food. Well, I think NOT! I think the cat used the gliders to get me out there. I don't give the gliders treats at night either. If my cat Huly thought that would work he would use it to his advantage. He just comes in and sleeps on my head, or tries to wake me up himself. His other method is he will torture the dogs to get them barking to wake me up so if he thought the Gliders would work he would be all over that!

Stuart has never done too much barking till the last couple of nights. I should be careful as my hubby wakes me to tell me he is barking since I can't hear, however when I check on him he is either playing or tonight was in his pouch. I guess I shouldn't but I gave him a treat both times. I Should stop right? Do you think he is ok barking? It won't hurt him to bark right? Do you think he just wants me since he's alone? Tonight he woke up barking just now at 4:00am but that is the USUAL time we all get up for my hubby to go to work, it just so happens THIS WEEK Stuart does NOT know he is on vacation so no more 4:00am all week. Last night I think he barked at like 2:30am. Unsure though, will have to write down times if it keeps up. Anyway will he be ok if I just come give him a quick peek say a few words NO TREATS though? There could be times my hubby hasn't heard him too who knows. He stopped barking when I came in and he came OOP. Thanks sugiemom to Stuart

Barking is definitely normal, I wouldn't really worry about it. It's just another way of communication, sometimes they bark at each other/sometimes they bark at me when they want me to come back to their cage. Mine bark right when I go to bed (usually right after I leave them alone). They also bark an hour before I wake up in the morning.

Whatever you do I wouldn't give him a treat in the middle of the night. He will get into the habit of it.
I've had mine bark for over 45minutes. It won't hurt them. He's just lonely. Ours bark about 15 min before the alarm and about an hour later if we don't get up. It is their mealie time.
To us the barking in 5he middle of 5he night is soothing. I wake up and hubby hears them and makes a little snicker in his sleep, rolls over and back to sleep. I listen to the type of bark it is. And then go back to sleep if it isn't their scared bark.
I have been listening to this for over 18 months so I have learned the difference.

I can't tell you about SM except watch him closely for missing fur. Eyebrows, tail, not sure where else.
There is a difference in my girls bark, It took a lot of time listening before I could tell the difference. Mine will bark at house noises at night, a mouse came to visit them, ( I definitely knew something was wrong that night), both were barking rather rapidly. Usually when they are wanting attention, there is a pause, Then more barking like they are listening.
When Fiona was a single joey, she would bark 3 or 4 times stop and do again. I learned to bark back and she would settle down after a bit. Didn't always work. Just wanted her to know we were still there.

He is in the process of training you and your husband. "I bark, hubby gets mom up and she comes and gives me a treat. I must repeat this experiment and see if it works again."
The little fuzz but sees that he is getting consistency and continues this nightly.
See how they train us?

Hah, sleepbarking! I hear one of gliders barking at night, not sure which one although I assume it's Mella since she's the more outgoing of the two. ;P I got into the habit of ignoring them when they bark since I don't want to encourage it, I figure they'd be just as likely to bark for me showing up as they would for treats!
