It's been about a month and a half since Ollie's last saga. He's been pretty happy and active during this period. His mouth healed up nicely and he was maintaining weight at 85 grams the entire time.

Sadly, on Sunday night his mouth started to bother him again and his weight dropped 7 grams from the night before. Some of the tissue around the corner of his mouth had gotten scabby and ulcerated. I took him to the vets right away and she cleaned it out and gave me antibiotics and metacam to administer.

I had never heard of Vetericyn until today when I was doing research online. I was wondering if this would be helpful in the healing of his mouth wound? (I also saw the previous post about MicrocynAH).

His mouth was bothering him this morning when I was giving him mealworms, so I would love to find anything to help speed up the healing and ease the pain for my little guy!

IMO whenever you have a question like you have asked concerning whether or not a product is safe to use around the mouth/eyes of an animal, you should always contact your vet. I would do that even if the product says it is safe simply because these gliders are so small and so little is known about them.

What happened to your little guy's mouth? I'm curious, since mine is going bald around his lips/chin so any info that could help me find a cause would be great. I't probably not the same, but just in case, I'm asking

3-4 years ago I noticed a small bump start to form around his chin - and I noticed because the hair started to fall off around it. Because it continued to grow (although very slowly), we decided to have it removed. It turned out that he got some tiny piece of foreign matter lodged into his skin, which caused the skin to calcify, thus creating the bump to form. After the bump was removed, it came back. My vet did a biopsy of it (as we feared it was cancer), but it turned out to just be a fibrous growth. Because the location is so close to his jaw, we can't remove it - we've just been monitoring it. It has grown a bit since it first appeared, and it actually has cause some of the teeth on that side of his mouth to fall out. But up until recently it has never bothered him and he went about life normally. It just looked like he had a fat lip on that side.

Back in January it appeared that a piece of this bump popped. We woke up with a really large scab on his face and the volume of the bump was gone...but what exactly happened, we are not sure. This is when his "bump" started to hurt him, because it turned into a wound. What I'm treating him for now, seems to be a bit of residual ulcerated tissue from this original wound.

My vet is still not entirely sure what has caused this bump to appear. While the bump at the side of his mounth seemingly went away, there's still a bump that is under his chin on that side of the mouth. It has since gotten a little vascular, but a biopsy and a blood test hasn't really produced much results.

My boyfriend thinks it's like "cauliflower ear" that fighters frequently experience. When a piece of cartilage breaks off in the ear from a hit, it causes the tissue in the ear to calcify causing it to become inflamed and look like cauliflower (if you don't know what it looks like, give it a Google. It's bizarre). Left untreated, the cauliflower ear will grow to a certain point then stop and harden. If the affected ear continues to get hit, it will continue to get worse, and in some cases it actually will burst (yuck). So, hence why he thinks they might be related. He thinks that possibly whatever foreign matter got into Ollie's face wasn't removed completely, so the tissue continued to calcify. But, that's all speculation!

Do not use Aloe on your glider, it is toxic to gliders.
