So this is early, but I want to see my options and hopefully have something prepared if I need it in the next few months/holidays.

My babies just got a very nice large spacious all living things cage with tons of space and treats and everything. My parents live about an hour from me for the holidays, and I sometimes go for 3-4 days/nights to spend time with them. I can't really pack up the ALT cage for all sorts of reasons. I saw a post on the glideariums, is that a solution for when I'm at their place? I have a little carrier for them, but when we get there and for 3-4 days is that an acceptable living place, with their bags and a wheel so they feel comfortable? How do you move you gliders for short trips? I would make glider food and can transport that cold, just what the necessities would be and the pros/cons of cage setups for them?
Thanks!

A lot of people use these when they travel: Pop up dog kennel.

You stand them on end and put down fleece in the bottom, you can then put their wheel in it.

If you have the room, this also works great too: Play pen

Glide-ariums available at SpinZone Global make a great vacation cage. You can get as large a size you can fit at your parents (or want to invest), the ER to Cottage is adequate for short stays, depending on how many gliders and their activity, the Cottage may be best option for the smallest size. I have a custom sized (designed to fit in my pop up camper when I had one), it's between those two sizes and I have a trio. I use the travel size wheel (also from SpinZone Global). I personally love it and have used it vertically or horizontally depending on best fit where in use. My trio has traveled across country twice using this.

There are other options for travel/vacation cages as well. Many use pop-up dog crates, while others may use smaller wire cages, but be careful, unless you invest in good quality, they may be flimsy and not worth it.

Coincidentally, my two gliders are I are just packing up this morning to go on our first 3-4 day overnight to my parents house, about 2 hours away. (I'm working on a project at their house, so we'll be over there a lot over the next few weeks.)

My gliders have a big beautiful cage at home, but I'm packing up our original (much smaller) starter cage from Pocket Pets as their "vacation home" with a wheel and a few pouches/toys to be left at my parents' place. I'm planning to give them more out-of-cage play time to make up for the smaller space.

I've got frozen salad and Critter Love nectar in a cooler with a couple of ice packs for the journey, along with a generous supply of treats.

I'll let you know how it goes!

If you frequent your parents home, it might be a good idea to keep a cage there with all the essentials (except food of course). If they have the room. Until they get used to their new vacation spot, you may want to let them "smell up" a cage set for a couple of days before you leave, and take it along in a ziplock bag so they don't over mark at your folks house from the new sights and smells. It may give a wrong impression.

I always put a fresh cage set in a day before we leave at home or camper, so I can bring it along the day of trip. It helps with transition.

We have found that when packing for a trip without our camper is more like packing for an infant. Their stuff takes up most the space in the car.

Stef,
I'd love to hear how it goes!!

Lady Magyver,

I hadn't thought about the new smells issue, but I plan on getting a few cage sets so they always have one in there so I'll let them get it all scented up. I don't think it's worth having a full size cage there, since most days I work, it's just if I get 2-3 days off in a town it's nice to spend those with them around Christmas or such. Either way, I'll use as much "scented by them" stuff in the touring cage, maybe even let them go in it for an hour or so the days before so the transition is easier. My hope is we have some months now so we can be bonded and there is some sort of trust to me so it won't be too crazy. As I think about it, it'll be a menagerie, me 2 sugar gliders and a hedgehog. I'll have one bag and they will have 5 and 2 cages haha.

Yea, I think scent is the major factor in being in a new location. I got my gliders set up in their smaller cage, now located in my parents' guest bathroom. I let them out last night for some play time in the new space, and Yoda did very well.

Winky, on the other hand, was showing definite signs of anxiety. She climbed the shower curtain and perched herself on the curtain rod, squeezed up against the wall. Her ears were flat, her eyes were huge, and her paws had a death-grip on the shower rod. She was terrified and didn't want to move, even though her brother was having a great time leaping around the small room.

She couldn't be coaxed off the rod, so I gently pried her little paws away and gave her a little cuddle before encouraging her back into the cage. She did better during play time this morning.

But being in an unfamiliar space, I didn't realize that Yoda would be able to squeeze his way out under the door! He made a break for it, just as my mom was coming out of her room with their cat in her arms. (!!!) At the news that Yoda was at large, Mom locked the cat into her room and Yoda leaped to her and was happily transported back to the bathroom.

So advice for overnights in unfamiliar locations:

1. Bring lots of scent-marked items to keep the gliders comfy. If they have a favorite item, bring it! I brought their favorite fleece jacket, and draped that over the travel cage to give a more comfortable-smelling atmosphere.

2. Check and double-check for any avenues of escape or danger. That gap between the door and the floor didn't look that big, but Yoda found a way.

3. Be prepared to spend some extra time with them to offer comfort if needed. You are their main source of security.

4. Brief your hosts on what to do in the event of a glider escape. (Don't panic!) I was so glad that Yoda jumped quickly to my mom, rather than setting out to explore the whole house! smile

Put a folded towel under the door to keep them in, we do that at the hotels when we go to the Sugar Glider gatherings.
