Do gliders typically make little grunts in their sleep? Do they ever potty while sleeping?

I'm trying to troubleshoot if there is connected to a medical issue (discomfort), or if this is somewhat typical glider behavior. I guess they dream like other furrbabies (good and bad dreams) and can respond accordingly while asleep, be it grunts, twitches, etc.? Urinalysis and fecals have been clean...

My little guy also lost his cage mate about 3 months ago (another story posted elsewhere for advice), so I'm wondering if some of the grunts may be attention-seeking (even though I'm wearing him and he is closely bonded to me)...maybe he pretty much wants to be pet non-stop?

I would say he sound normal, you have had him checked by the vet, with you carrying him more you are probably just more in tune to his noises.

I don't know about releaving themselves while still asleep, but mine frequently make enough noise I think they're awake... until I look in to the pouch. So, yes, noises are normal.

My little guy's symptoms escalated today. He began to strain frequently from about 11:30 until an emergency vet appointment at 3:30. He has been passing feces but little to no urine (a couple smudges versus droplets in the pouch). His occasional grunts escalated to strained cries mixed with angry crabbing and irritability, along with squinting and bearing down while trying to relieve himself, to no avail.

Vet report: Urinalysis still clear (no inflammation, no infection/bacteria, no crystals, and no blood)...had to get a radiograph (+ anesthesia for a clear radiograph). My vet found stones in his urethra, usually accompanied by blood but not in this case. Fortunately, his urethra isn't completely blocked (which would require surgery and is highly invasive/risky, leaves scar tissue, etc.). He doesn't want to urinate on his own right now due to pain; the vet massaged his bladder for relief and to collect the urine for testing. Fingers crossed, a blockage doesn't occur while he passes the stones. I did ask again about culturing the urine, but my vet stands by it not being sterile/accurate enough and extracting a sample from the bladder directly risks tearing the urethra (even under anesthesia). With no white blood cells or bacteria apparent in his urinalysis, he wants to address the stones first.

Treatment: Since my vet believes he is producing the stones versus the stones being a product of infection, I am to administer valium (an opiate/muscle relaxer) to encourage passing of the stones, then more radiographs in 48 hours to make sure they are gone.

Please say prayers for my little guy. I hope he feels well enough to eat tonight and can pass the stones without blockage. We are not sure if this is a genetic predisposition or diet-related. He is on the BML diet, though he tends not to touch the carrots, green beans, cantaloupe, honeydew, cherries, or blueberries...only really eats ALL the BML, peas, corn, and a little watermelon and grapes...and loves his mealies (4-5), of course. I plan to withhold the BML (calcium-rich) tonight and offer lots of melon, grapes, and a "buffet" of different fruit juices to encourage hydration. I am beginning to look at other diets, though it has been 2.5 years since he had the issue with crystals in his urine. Anyone else have similar experience (bladder stones/crystals) with BML, with improved results on a different diet?

I haven't had to deal with any health issues, as of yet. I'm going to includes prayers for your little guy to pass his stones and be better soon.

Update #2!
After 1 week on the Diazepam (valium), our little boy was x-rayed by the vet, and another urinalysis was done. Still no infecton or blood, but the stones, in his urethra, still had not moved (and I was sooo optimistic too, since he'd been doing well and feeling good). We took him back to the vet today for anesthesia, about an hour's worth of bladder massaging, and another x-ray. Prayers were answered today!

Our vet succeeded in extracting all but 1 stone, which he hopes will move through with the others out of the way. Our vet didn't want him anesthetized any longer today. We return to the vet after trying another 2 weeks of valium. With fingers crossed and more prayers, we hope our vet can push the remaining stone out of his urethra (if he doesn't pass it on his own)! He has been such a trooper through all this!

By the way, if you have never seen a glider on valium, it's amusingly adorable! After his valium dose, my little boy is less shy and inhibited and definitely feeling "good" *lol*! Hope he doesn't have an opiate addiction afterwards though (and, no, I am not endorsing valium for gliders... just thankful my boy isn't having a negative, adverse reacton while on it *lol*)!

I was discussing your glider with my vet and he asked if your vet has checked the PH of his urine.

That would be something you could ask your vet.

Urine pH is checked during the urinalysis and was checked off as within normal range. My vet thinks the stones are likely calcium oxalate (and won't dissolve in acidic urine), but I hope we can extract the remaining stone and analyze it to be sure. My vet said the others crumbled into a murky liquid as they were extracted (so he wiped it away and didn't think to save it for analysis).

Doctor Mike and I talk a lot about different problems and surgeries that his staff have to tell us "time is up".

I wonder what would happen if we could spend several hours together without interruptions. It is hard to stop once we get going.

This is why he keeps me outfitted with SubQ fluids, pain meds and 3 different antibiotics.
