I had 2 adult sugar gliders, but one recently passed away :'( I was debating on getting another glider considering they are colony animals. My dilemma is that my sugar gliders (both female) were already separated for little over a year in separate cages, but still next to each other. The reason they were separated is that the female that passed away got injured (twice) and needed surgery for one of her injuries. We are unsure if whether or not her sister did cause the injury due to food aggression, or some other reason, and afterward over-groomed the injury in attempt to "heal" it? I am unsure of whether or not to save another glider. Will I even be able to put them together due to her possible food aggression and since she has already had a cage to herself for a year, not like another glider in her "territory"? It also wouldn't be fair to another glider if they couldn't be together and had to be in their own cage. I do feel like though she is missing a companion in the cage next to her. She is also not getting on my arm as fast as she used to for playtime. I am scared that she is falling into depression, or just becoming 'detached' and slower. I also make sure to play with her for at least an hour every night. I am just unsure if it is wise for me to get another. I make sure to feed her the HPW diet. Sometime with boiled chicken, mealworms, or sliced almonds. I don't want her to quit eating, although she is getting pickier and dosen't touch her fruits and veggies as much. I am going to ask my vet what she thinks, but I just wanted to hear other opinions as well.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Gliders do change from time to time what they will eat. Has she been to the vet? Does she have a wheel and toys? Did her behavior change right after the other passed? Has she ever done this before?

Thank you, She has been to the vet, after her sisters death. She was a little under weight so I'm making sure to give her the protein that she needs and she has filled out nicely and is getting to a better weight. I am going there this week. She does have a wheel and a lot of toys. Although she doesn't seem as active on her wheel as before (she loves the thing) and she isn't as loud in her cage as she use too. Her behavior did change only slightly. I could almost sense that she is sadder, if you know what I mean. She would look over at the other cage after it happened and seemed to be "searching" for her sister. Even during tent time I still get a sense that she is looking for her sister. It's sad too cause I don't hear her 'clicks' and 'chips' anymore cause she doesn't have any glider to talk too. I am trying to keep her stimulated. I got her crickets (live) so she could catch them, played with a feather with her and got her some new toys.

I haven't had much of an issue with food aggression. I would think if her cage is big enough for two, you could consider getting her a friend. There will be a 30 day quarantine, and a few pouch swaps, cage swaps in that time . You may get lucky and find a rescue in your area. Since you already have 2 cages, maybe a rescue may allow you to bring the glider back to them if things don't work out. There are ways to work with food aggression. 2 separate dishes in separate areas of the cage, cover one put it higher or lower... And so on. Terry has food aggression issues with her teio, and Feather may have more ideas too. Please keep us posted, and if I think of anything else, I will post here too. And I forgot, but so glad you are here!

I'm not really sure on a joey. Sometimes they will accept, sometimes not. A joey would need a lot more attention since they came from their parents.
It also depends if you plan to keep gliders a while longer. A joey with it's lifespan of up to 12 -15 years, will need a new mate if your older one passes. If that's the case you may want a pair.
A rescue about the same age or at least an adult who has lost it's mate may be better.
Gliders are unique in personality, so it is hard to tell. You may want to give her more time too.

I would pair her with a glider her age or two joeys. That way when she passes the joeys will have each other.
By the way how old is she.

I first homed a pair of females that were around 1 yr of age (original mom didn't know their OOP, which I feel was a little strange since they came from a reputable breeder, I believe). Any how, they got along terrifically! Over a year later I homed a single neutered male, he was around 4 yrs old, the previous mom told me she was his third home (if I'm remembering correctly), I think he was rescued by her, or the time before her. He'd had, prior to being in her care, had been in a fight with a cage mate and had an injured foot. We went through standard quarantine, even though I was certain he was healthy, then prep for intros began. They took two attempts, in the same day to have success. At that time he moved into the girls cage, all was well. Not long after, we moved across country, they temporary stayed in a home-made, mesh enclosure (made by Ollie's previous mom), I purchased them a brand new, extremely large cage. It wasn't long after that when Ollie started getting fussy with the girls at times and would chase them away from food, and sometimes floor toys. It was weird, and I couldn't really tell what the issue was, sometimes they could all eat together fine, other times not. After monitoring as close as possible I determined it may be food aggression, so I now use multiple feeding stations. Since the focus seemed to be around the fruit/veg dish, I started with three separate f/v feeding stations and one nectar. I currently use two f/v stations and one nectar. There was still some fussing and chasing, but luckily no injuries and no one is malnourished. Anyway, since placing them in their new cage, so far I haven't heard any fussing over food, other than maybe the first evening, it's been just over a week, and I haven't seen or heard any food aggression. Still keeping separate f/v stations though. Another tip for food aggression is to make sure you have plenty of food and it should be placed int he cage a bit prior to them waking to eat. This is usually hard for me to do because Ollie is an early riser. He's usually up waiting Defoe me to bring food and hand him a green bean.

Just putting this out there, if you are planning on having gliders for years to come, and if you were going to consider getting two if you decide on joeys or young'ns, maybe you could still keep two cages if intros didn't work out. The new ones would have to be together already, so they would have each other either way, but your Bear would at least have neighbors again if they didn't get along as cage mates.

Feather is awesome with her gliders. Unless I have one dumped in my lap, I will be inquiring about availability of one hers soon. I'm still trying to figure if I will be going to the glider gathering she is hosting next month
