This morning when I woke up I noticed that my Ollie was hissing while trying to go the bathroom, and nothing was coming out. I gave him a bunch of water and apple sauce, but it didn't seem to help. He was so uncomfortable that he was having issues settling down to sleep, as well. So, I took him to the vets this afternoon and she administered sub-q fluids and sent him home with some stool softener to give him twice a day until he goes back to normal. She also wanted me to come back for more fluids twice a day until he goes back to normal, starting tomorrow AM. At about 9pm I went to go check on him. I noticed he woke up at one point and switched pouches. After letting him sleep for a bit I jostled him awake to try and give him some more apple sauce and try pumpkin. He took a tiny bit of apple sauce and squeezed out a very tiny amount of poop that was pretty soft. He went back to sleep in my hand for a while then woke up on his own. I offered him some more apple sauce which he took, then he climbed off of me onto the bed, where I was sitting. He walked away a bit then stood there staring into space. I put a little bit of apple sauce on my finger and put it in front of his mouth. I touched it to his mouth and he immediately shook his head. Then seconds later shook it some more, shooting vomit all over the place. After that I grabbed him and he climbed on me, then I put him on the cage where I offered him water (which he refused) and more apple sauce (which he accepted a small amount). He squeezed out another tiny piece of soft stool, then sat on the cage staring into space again, so I collected him in my hands and he climbed up onto my shoulder where he's currently sleeping under my hood. I did not give him the stool softener medicine because I did not want to exasperate anything. I'm currently visiting my parents (of course this would happen now) and the closest 24 hour vet that has any idea what to do with gliders is an hour and a half away, and I'm not totally confident it would be safe for me to drive that by myself at this hour. There is a 24 hour vet near-by and they offered to look at him, but they don't have any experience with gliders and are not totally confident they can help. As far as I'm aware, Ollie hasn't consumed anything aside from the apple sauce I gave him post-throw up -- I'm assuming he threw up whatever I had given him before that, and possibly whatever else he might've consumed before I came into the room. The vet didn't take an x-ray (which I'm now kicking myself wishing I asked her to) but she felt his abdomen and didn't think he felt backed up. I'm obviously concerned, and wondering if anyone has any word of advice of what I can do right now to help out Ollie. I'm going to take him back to the vet first thing in the morning, but I'm freaking out right now trying to figure out what to do with my little guy.

Thank you so much! I going to the vet I saw yesterday right at 8am. I'll definitely pass this along to her when I'm there, as my vet at home doesn't get into the office until 10am. I stayed up with Ollie through the night. He drank a little yogurt yogurt juice for me and ate some apple sauces but that's about it. He wouldn't take anything else from me. He mainly stayed curled upon in my hand all night.

I'm at the vets right now waiting. I took him in at 8am and the vet who could see him wasn't in until 10:30am, so we just had a nurse give him more fluids in the meantime. Now that I'm here, this vet(a different one from yesterday) checked him out and gave him an x-ray and there's a swollen gland near one side of his cloaca (which I noticed yesterday, but the vet said she wasn't concerned with it. Ugh). She did a needle aspirate and when she did that it started to drain down. They checked the fluid and there's no bacteria in it, just white blood cells. The vet is talking with my vet back home right now to see if they think Ollie will be fine if they finish lancing it here and send him home with meds or if we need to head to a 24 hour hospital in Boston where they can monitor overnight, and are more experienced with gliders. Although, the vet tech helping the vet is a glider owner and ex- breeder, so it makes me feel better that there's someone here that at least knows basics of gliders. Fingers crossed that Ollie will pull out of this! And in regards to the dairy question, I do give Ollie a little bit of the Gerber banana yogurt juice from time to time to help keep him hydrated if I'm ever concerned, since he's an oldie at 12 years old. So he got a little bit for a couple days after our travel. I never give him dairy otherwise - should I not be giving him the yogurt juice? I also give him apple juice cut with water but he doesn't always take it - he ALWAYS takes the yogurt juice, though.

Given the information you've stated above, now that you're at the vet, the dairy is likely not an issue at this point. I question the absence of bacteria, as generally this is a culture test that is sent off. They may be able to see something under a microscope, but I would have them send a sample out for a culture so you can know what you are working with. You don't aspirate a swollen gland - so this is concerning, as well. I would question this.

Perhaps I misspoke and it's not a swollen gland but abscess? I described the situation to my vet at home and she was OK with it all. When they checked it in the lab when I was there, she us said that there was normal bacteria in it that you find around the butt, but nothing abnormal. I will request a sample to be sent out if still possible. My vet spoke with her, as well and approved her to lance the rest of the abscess to completely drain it and relieve pressure. I left Ollie at the vets for the procedure, so I'll pick him up in a few. She's going to administer more fluids and send me home with pain meds and antibiotics. I'm not sure what those are yet, but she said that she's being mindful not to give him something that will dehydrate/constipate him further. She also mentioned having me bring him back for Moore fluids in the AM. I will update with proper information when I get him in a few.

I asked the vet to clarify what was wrong and she said that he had a swollen cloaca gland that was starting to abscess. When I picked him up, the vet said that he got a little brighter after she drained him and gave him meds. When I got him home he took a yogurt drop from me, which he wouldn't take from me last night. I went to the store and bought a small hospital cage for him to keep him separate from the other two while he rest/heals. I just administered the prescribed stool softener, put a warm compress on his bottom, and he ate a bit of apple sauce and a couple of mealworms. He's now back to nuzzling into my hand. I'll probably try and stay up with him another hour or two to see if everything stays down. We have a follow-up in the morning for more fluids and so the vet can check his progress. Hopefully he'll start to feel better soon. (and please pardon all of my typos - I'm posting from my phone which isn't the easiest!)

No happy dance for Ollie just yet. I took him back to the vets this morning and she gave him his fluids, and everyone agreed he looked much brighter and more alert. It looked like he didn't eat much of anything last night, but there were a three poops in the cage, so that was progress, and he took a little more apple sauce and mealworms from me before the vets and a yogurt drop at the vets. I took him in again tonight for another round of fluids and they also administered his antibiotics, pain meds and stool softener. He now appears worse, and I'm actually worried that they administered too much sub q fluids. His breathing is heavy and he's really out of it. His body also appears puffy from all the liquids. He took a yogurt drop from me, but when I place anything else in front of his face he just stares straight past it, like it's not even registering. There are certain points when I can hear clicking in his breathing, but it comes and goes. My vet at home does emergency phone consultation until midnight, so I called and left a message and am just waiting for a call back...

He has been peeing. He just sat on my knee and peed all over my skirt. I sniffed it and it doesn't smell like anything. It's almost like he's just leaking water. The pouch he was in earlier also was damp. My vet called me back, and confirmed that yes he is definitely getting too much fluids. She told me for tonight to just keep an eye on him and the fluids should absorb and make their way out of his body eventually. If he doesn't look much better by the morning then I'm going to have to bring him into Boston to go to the animal hospital there that will definitely be able to treat him properly. She also said absolutely no more fluids, and perhaps try to syringe feed him until he perks back up. He did take another couple of yogurt drops from me and had a couple of licks of yogurt juice, but is disinterested in anything else right now.

Another update. I took Ollie to a different vet today, one that actually had an exotic vet in today, and she has had a lot of experience with gliders. She confirmed that yes he had way too much fluids. She also said that they were giving him WAY too much medicine, so basically he ODed. He's currently being kept in a dark incubator to try and help him stabilize. She also gave him an injection that's supposed to help move the fluids out of him and help the pressure on his heart. She said if he doesn't improve in an hour or two they'll give me him a second round. So right now is just a waiting game. His bottom looks great, according to the vet, but now she's worried that his kidney or liver might have been damaged from the overdose. She took an x-ray, but she can't really see much of his organs right now, and she doesn't want to draw blood because of his fragile state. I'm going back at 4pm to get him. I'm upset with myself for not realizing they were giving him too much medication. I know better, but I never looked at the dosage since they were administering them at the facility. Please pray for my little guy. That's all we can do right now.

Another update: Ollie survived the night but is still not in amazing shape. At the very least he can now curl up and sleep. He had so much fluids in him yesterday that he just laid sprawled out flat and not sleeping. Today he at least slept most of the day curled up in a pouch. And when I checked on him early this evening he crawled out to me and climbed in my shirt - so at least he seems a bit more comfortable and mildly lucid. Yesterday at the vets he was 104 grams and when I weighed him tonight he was 88, so he's passed most of the fluids (he weighed in at 79 on Monday). He's still breathing a bit heavy, though. Not AS bad, but not normal either. The only things I've been able to get him willingly to eat is yogurt drops and yogurt juice. I tried syringe feeding him a little and I squirt a bit in his mouth and he'll let it just drip right out the side. It's like it doesn't even register that something is being put in his mouth. He's currently curled up in my shirt again sleeping, and I'm praying that he gets better tomorrow.

He needs some protein, try offering yogurt, chicken and gravy baby food and avocado.
They are not the best foods but it is better than yogurt drops.

After I posted last night I was able to get him to eat a bit of the Omnivore Care the vet gave me by syringe feeding him. And as soon as I did that he seemed to perk up a little. He ate a good bit of apple sauce and drank water when it was offered to him. I'll definitely try the yogurt and chicken baby food tonight. I'll try syringe feeding him some of the HPW, as well. His breathing is still a bit labored and his motor skills are wonky. His front legs seem fine, but his back legs are off. He sometimes has a hard time grabbing the bars with them when he's in the cage and he goes off balance from time to time. I called the vet from Mattapoisett today to check in and see if there's anything I should do. I scheduled a follow-up for Monday, but she thought that he's OK so long as he's eating. I'll definitely work on getting more of those proteins in him tonight.

Another update in Ollie's saga: I took Ollie back to the vet this morning since he's been showing very tiny amounts of improvement, but he is still having a hard time breathing and he's walking clumsily. She thinks at this point he has a respiratory infection caused by all of this, so she switched his antibiotics and hopefully this will clear it up. The last few nights I've been syringe feeding him HPW, which he happily laps up. He also eats a bit of apple sauce and sometimes I offer yogurt juice - but anything that he needs to chew, like veggies and mealworms he has a hard time doing, as he doesn't have the energy to do that. He did successfully eat one mealworm, but it was with my help and it probably took about 5 minutes. Because he's not eating anything other than HPW and apple sauce, I'm concerned with calcium - will he be OK or should I add anything to his diet for the time being? Like I mentioned his walking is wonky. He falls off balance occasionally and his leg movement, especially his back legs, can be erratic. I worry about calcium deficiency. It's been a week since he's eaten a "balanced meal".

Glad he seems to be better!
The HPW will have adequate calcium to get him by. Again, I am no expert.
Where do you get your HPW from?

Thank you for the recommendation I have had my gliders for a year now. The first checkup they got when I first got them I tried one of the other vets listed and did not fell that they had any knowledge about sugar gliders. Now a year later it is almost time for another checkup and I was looking for a new vet so I will try them. Thanks again Dave

Sadly, he's not really better. I've been meaning to post an update, I've just been so busy. After two x-rays and an ultrasound at my vet back home in New York, it was discovered that not only was one of his lungs only partially inflated, he also has a "nodule" on his lungs which is either a really bad respiratory infection or cancer. The only way to really diagnose it is with a biopsy, which is out of the question for my little guy. The vet thinks that it's probably cancer, which is not curable, so why put him through all that trauma for nothing? He's currently on an antibiotic and lasix in hopes that he'll pass the rest of the fluids he's still retaining, and he'll either get a steroid or an anti-inflammatory to hopefully help him regain some of his strength. My vet wasn't positive about a steroid (prednisone, particularly) since there's not a whole lot of research on gliders being on them? But basically he had an underlying sickness already and the overdose exasperated it making it more severe, quicker. His breathing is heavy and his motor skills are still wonky - now I'm just waiting to see if he gets any better to at least live out the rest of his days a bit more comfortably/normally. Otherwise I'm going to have to make a a decision, because the life he's living right now is not a very good one. I've been putting him in the pouch with Kirby and Dee during the day to sleep, and that seems to at least comfort him some.

I'm glad that at least you have a diagnosis. I'm sorry you and he have to go through this. It's never easy to make those decisions, and I can't help you on when it's time. It sounds to me that he needs a few more cuddles. I want to thank you for sharing this experience with us, as I am still new to this. Prayers he will pull through this.
