hi.. i got two new glider home last month so im new with this...

3 days ago my cousin buy (rescue really but she said she been monitoring it for two week..she was so sad with the condition the shop put the glider in she just have to buy if in hoping she can provide a better environment for the glider) a sugar glider from a pet shop, but knowing next to nothing about sugar glider she give her (i named her Aera) to me.

now, i have been keeping my own two girls (Lyra n Elsa) for nearing two month and i like to think we're doing ok. and i did my research on sugar glider months before i get them.

Aera come to me with a bare midle tail (i dont see any blood on them), she's so small i thought she's been separated with her mother to early but..

here is the full detail that i know
1. at the pet shop.. she is keep in an aquarium display case better suit for hamster.. with no pouch or any place to rest or hide.. from what my cousin tell me..there was another glider with her before but she been alone for a bout a week in that display aquarium. she sleep burrow in the wood bedding.

2. the shop-owner say the tail will grow back if it break (got cut of?) and the way he handle it is harsh.. my cousin tell me all this when i ask her what did the shop-owner say about the tail while she purchase her.. and he said there no need to put water bottle for her because she eat fruits and can get the water from the apple he feed her with.. (Seriously!!?? i hate this guy =<)

so of course hearing this i have to 'educate' my cousin thus end up being the proud mama of this new baby glider.. i have her for 2 day from 22/10/17, Aera is like 2/3 size of my Lyra n Elsa.. and they are 6 month and 8 month each.. i don't know how old Aera is..

in the whole 3 day that i know her.. i see that the tail look a bit better.. there is patch of new fur at the bare spot (area?). but yesterday while playing/bonding with her its just hit me.. did she did that to her self?

so i google a bit and successfully scared my self of the possibility.. (it was scary enough while reading it and knowing if might happen to my glider BEFORE i got any of them.. now that i might have one on my watch.. cry cry cry )

what should i do?

If the fur is growing back, leave things be. It sounds like you're doing everything right. If the glider did do it to herself, it sounds like she's stopped now that she's in a better situation.

If you suddenly see new areas become furless or where the new fur is growing become bald again, then I would monitor her & see about getting her to a vet.

BTW: Welcome & please register so we know to whom we're talking. Also, that would let you access the other area smile

Welcome to Glider central!

I agree 100% with Hutch.

Some gliders are just petite, but I'm sure her other diet didn't help.

Please register and keep us posted on her progress smile

I agree with Hutch also! She will probably put on some weight now that she is getting better care.

Can you post a picture of her tail. It is possible that she was just over grooming it because of stress.

It can take a few weeks to a month or so. It will depend how much she grooms it.

hemm.. i can't really compare with any picture.. coz... tounge

but the tail really look more furry then before..the bald spot is less (smaller?) at her tail, before is just a long strip of fur-less tail.. and i have never heard any distress sound coming for her but im still worry (ive read the mambo's story and it is heart breaking)

i just though the bald spot is irregular.. and the fur looks like its grow on random places..(sorry English is not my first language and its very hard to explain) i have to take picture n show to you guys next time..

Good the fur is growing back. She probably just needed a better owner and better food plus some love.
