Good Morning All,
My daughter and I adopted a pair of female sugar gliders Suki and Tem. We re-homed them off of Craigs List. They are about 3 years old. Previous family lost interest in them.
So, as a new owner I have a few worries / concerns. They were fed fruits, veggies and chicken at prior home. I have been working on getting them on the BML diet, with very limited success. I have been feeding aprox 1 tbs of the BML diet (I know it should be two, but I am trying to monitor their intake, and they have yet to finish the 1 TBS) I have mixed the fruits and veggies in and attempted to feed seperate. it appears they have eatten little or none of the veggies, and only the watermellon of the fruits (veg:corn, greenbeans, carrots; fruit: watermellon, pineapple, apple, grapes)
one has eatten grape as a "treat" but they dont seem to be eatting much at night. both are peeing and pooping regularly, so I assume they are eatting some - just doesnt seem to be enough.
I have fed them a few meal worms, which they love - but in the am before sleep.
the first morning they were up when we got up in the morning - around 630. however the past 3 mornings they have been asleep all day (630 am till we wake them around 7) one wakes up, eats and plays in the tent for about an hour, then goes back to sleep. the other stays in the pouch sleeping / resting till around 9/930 before getting up and playing a little while in the tent. She (Tem) is very nippy - and by nippy I mean hard blood drawiwng bites. we have tried hard not to react, however last night, my daughter was in the tent. I approaced, and she came right to where I was. I offered her my hand and she bit hard (feels like it is intentional)
I want to start pouching them more during the day, but dont know if its too soon, or will stress them out - Im sure the move has been stressful on them.
Any suggestions / ideas would be great!!!
Thanks
B

If they don't eat all of the staple, they may not need that much protein or they really don't like it.

You can try a different staple, if you click on the word diet it will take you to the database of all the diets.

As far as the fruits and veggies go, if you look closely they have eaten out the insides and left the part that they can't digest. The outsides are mainly non-soluble fiber and they shouldn't have their fruits and veggies blended because of that.

Since the majority of your post is about diet, I'm going to move this to diet & Nutrition. Then, if you would please, post your questions on pouching in our Bonding & Relations Forum wink

Chicken with fruits and veggies is not a horrible feeding plan and at three years old they seem to have done okay. If we could see a picture, it would tell us alot about their fur and their size.

But they also need some extra vitamins, and you can never be sure what else they may have gotten at the previous home dunno

As Feather suggest, I would click on the word diet and see if there is a feeding plan that seems more compatible with your life and you think they might like. Some are very easy to follow and some more complicated.

We will be happy to help as much as we can.

:welcomegc: So glad you're here!

Mine are 3 years old too! But I've had them since they were joeys.

The BML diet is a good place to start for trying diets.

How long have you had them? New diets for gliders and the stress of a rehome can cause them to be a little picky. Also new vegetables and fruit may have a different texture and smell they aren't accustomed to. Kim is right that they hull many different types of f/v, therefore the dish may look barely un touched. Mine for example I thought they hated carrots. They do not. Sometimes they would chew them up, sometimes they just sucked on them.

There are two types of fiber in f/v: Soluble and insoluble. Gliders only swallow the soluble fiber, they spit out the insoluble. Their digestive systems do not use insoluble fiber.

Because they are new to you, and are in a strange place with new smells and sights, this may also throw off their eating. Hang in there.

I did forget to add mine don't always eat everything either. But I offer it to them nightly, and I feel good about them getting what they need.

If you have a concern about their intake, you can get a digital kitchen scale that measures grams. Weigh each dish before and after feeding.

One last thing. When I first introduced the BML diet to mine, I offered it separately. Then I offered it together as a gravy mix. Mine prefered it separate. Just trying to give you a few options.

Please keep us posted on their progress!

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. I will post pictures tomorrow, because they will get really mad at me if I wake them up now!!!
Do you think it best to offer the same food consistently (bml, same fruits / veggies) for a few weeks for them to get used to it, or should I offer variety until I find something they seem to really like?

BML is a very strict diet. It is best to stick to the recipe, and if you want to add different f/v as an occasional treat that is fine.

Mine do go through phases of eating just specific f/v out of their bowl sometimes. I figure it is because it is what their system may need. You should see an improvement over 4-8 weeks. Some gliders take longer.

Sorry so late in greeting, but been at work and it's been a crazy week, lol.

Since others have already gave you pretty much the best advise that could possibly be given, I'll just state I agree with them all, lol.

Good luck.

Oh, and if I may add a little about the nipping, keep in mind she is scared and that is her defense. I had a glider once like that, and I wouldn't have called her "nippy" lol, she bit blood-drawing bites! She got much better once I realized it was fear-based and went on a mission to make her feel more comfortable with me. Unfortunately with all my hard work with her paid off forging a fairly good relationship, and my time with her was not long enough, RIP my sweet Lulu.

They are so cute!

I had to take pics of mine side by side to find different facial characteristics. Dot's ears are huge compared to Fiona, and she is physically bigger, but in certain situations I could only see their face. Fiona's black stripe doesn't touch her nose. Dot 'so stripe does touch hernose.

Tem is much more peteit than Suki. Their personalities are very different too. Sometimes I need to double take, but their movements and actions are so different, they are becoming easier to tell apart smile

My girls ate much better last night smile
I had started using apples, grapes, watermellon as the fruit with my BML. I picked up some frozen blueberries and sweet cherries to add to the mix, and I mixed it all up... most of it was gone this am smile yay!!!

That is great, just remember to stick to the fruits and vegetables on the list for BML. BML is one of the strictest diets and it must be followed religiously.
