I have a heating lamp installed above the cage to provide heat for the gliders when it's cold. This morning I opened the cage to let them out. When I woke up a few hours later, I sensed a burning smell. I noticed one of my sugies has burned fur on her tail. DOn't they feel pain in their tails!?? WHy would she approach a heated object and stick her tail under it! She would need to sit they for a while.
I don't think there is a tissue damage; just the fur. Please tell me what you think
Thanks

I don't know why your glider did that.

Is his or her skin burned also?

I would mount the lamp at least 10 inches above the top of the cage.

How cold is it in the room where the gliders are?

If it 68 or above they should not need the heat lamp, just a double fleece pouch with some blankets.

I agree with Kim, I would also move their pouch a bit further away from lamp. And offer a different pouch out of the lamp completely. If they choose pouch away from lamp, I would divert the lamp away from them more.

Also, if your glider is out of the pouch and perched somewhere in the cage near the lamp and slides into a turpor, or daydream like state,(just chillin, hanging out), they may not realize they are getting burned at first.

(I hope the above makes sense, I'm on cold medication, and find it difficult to put words together in a comprehensible way).

I agree with Feather/Kim about the temperature and the need for an added heat source.

The key here is the highlighted portion of your post.
Whenever your gliders are out of cage, the heat lamp should be OFF. In addition, out of cage time should always be supervised because of the many things gliders can get into which could be dangerous. If you are a heavy sleeper, you might not hear them if they were in distress.

I am in NJ and the winters are cold. They do have a fleece pouch and a blanket but it can be pretty cold when they are running inside the cage. Probably bellow 60.
She got burned when she was outside the cage. Apparently she was sitting on the cage under the lamp which is (20 inches above the cage). Her skin seems fine. Don't they feel pain in their tails?

Ok, again, I apologize...

I quoted you, and what I was replying to was your signature...

Sorry, I am ill, and very unaware of my surroundings... And apparently, my reading comprehension is at 0%...
I need to go to bed...

I know they feel their tail, it may not have to be near on the lamp but a few seconds to burn. The smell may linger longer

I'm glad the smell woke you up.

I'm also in NJ. I keep the heat around 64 downstairs for them. There are fleece blankets inside their pouches. Also AviTech used to make an infared heater. Its attached to the back of my cage and they don't get burned on it. Unfortunately they stopped making them sometime last year because they said teh cost to make them and the price sold wasnt profitable.
