The abscess in Dalton's jawbone has returned for a 3rd time. We surgically removed it, treated it with Chloromycetin and, finally, aspirated it and did a culture and sensitivities. The culture produced Citrobacter and Enterobacter. The sensitivities suggested we take him off of the chloramphenicol and put him on Marbofloxacin for one of the bacteria. The recommended antibiotic for the other bacteria was deemed too toxic for a glider. The swelling hasn't been significantly reduced by 4 days on the Marbofloxacin. We see the vet again as soon as he returns to town on Saturday. I'm hoping and praying for a 'Hail Mary' pass. That someone reading this post will have an idea. Otherwise I'm going to have to let him go and join Bliss and Karin. Any and all ideas will be gratefully considered. Thank you for reading this. Alice

Maybe he isn't staying on the antibiotics long enough. I have found that longer periods on antibiotics gets rid of the infection.
The SMZ-TMZ would take care of the Enterobacter bacteria, the other meds must be for the Citrobacter bacteria.
Will keep him in my prayers, Dalton doesn't need to join Karin, Bliss and Tucker yet!

Thank you!! SMZ-TMZ is the Marbofloxacin? How long is long enough on an antibiotic? He's been on several and only stopped/switched for good cause..... I'm hoping someone knows of something that would nail the Citrobacter.

Marbofloxacin is different. SMZ-TMZ is known as Bactrim.
I would say 3 to 4 weeks, specially if it is in the bone.

vet had to prioritize a very sick cat but I'm happy with the decision-stay on the Marbofloxacin for 2 more weeks if it's helping then reevaluate whether to do surgery to remove the infected part of the jawbone. LOTS of mealworms in this boy's future.

I am so sorry for all Dalton and you are going through, Alice. Seems the vet knows what he is doing, and hopefully the course of treatment will work so no drastic surgery will be needed.
Sending good thoughts your way for Little Dalton, and you, of course

Update. Dalton has been on Marbofloxacin since the last post. He had been slowly improving but now is starting to get worse. We met with his vet and we decided to give him the longshot. He's scheduled for surgery Wednesday morning. Part of his jaw will have to be removed and he may lose an eye. Please pray for my boy. The odds are not in his favor, but we are not giving up.

Dalton came through the surgery like the little champ that he is. Still has both eyes, no e-collar and no restrictions!! New concern is the possibility that it's cancer, not an abscess. Biopsy, culture and sensitivities done. Pradofloxacin (new, stronger form of Marbofloxacin) 1x/day and Buprenorphine for pain as needed. Can't figure out how to add the post-op picture here so will put it on my FB page. Thank you, thank you for all the prayers. It means the world to me that he is still surrounded by the love of his GC family. I tried to prepare for the worst, telling myself that Karin, Bliss and Tucker would be waiting for him on the far side of the bridge but.....they'll just have to wait. Stay tuned.......
