Hi! I'm Amapola, and I have had a single suggie since 8/21/18. His name is Lucas, and he's become the love of my life. I was introduced to Sugar Glider's by a friend with years of experience, so I've had an outstanding in-person mentor along the way!

I am very aware Sugar Gliders are kept better in pairs, but Lucas was a singleton. I have been scouring the local listings ever since looking for a companion when I had a miracle happen. A local rehabber had rescued two gliders, a father-daughter pair. They are kept in adjoining cages but separated because the father is intact. The dad is 4 and the girl is 2. I inquired after them and the local rehabber said she would give them to me to $150 for everything, cage, gliders, any equipment because she saw that I wasn't just an impulse buyer but that I had done my research plus I had a support system to fall back on. She didn't have the experience or time for gliders and was happy when I enquired it turned out I wasn't just some Joe that thought Suggies looked cool.

Since dad is intact and Lucas is intact, I thought I would fix them at the same time soon. After fixing, I am giving my friend the dad because her suggie is now alone (we got suggies at the same time, but ours were not bonded to each other and singletons. Her previous suggies have sadly passed away through an accident).

So that was how I was going from 1 to 3 in a day.

But wait! There's more!

My friend is having problems with her glider. She's had her for the same amount of time I have had Lucas and she has gotten nowhere in the bonding process. At all. She's tried everything but her sugar glider had a bad experience at the beginning of the process when she escaped and inadvertently got stuck. SHe wants to give me her glider, Mota, for a little while to see how she reacts to me and how I can help the process. (I'm pretty sure this is not a permanent situation, however).

So on Saturday, I'm getting a pair of gliders, and on Sunday I'm (babysitting? Trial-running?) another glider. So I'll have a four-year-old intact male, a two-year-old female, a six-month-old intact male, and six-month leucistic female. Wow.

TL;DR: Wanted to get one companion for my glider. Ended up with two sugar gliders and vacationer.

Any tips? grin

Here is my boy, Lucas:

Be patient and take it at the glider's pace. Check out the two threads in bonding & Relations at the top of the page.

Bourbon's thread will help you and specially your friend with her glider. It is titled Establishing a Relationship with your glider.

The swapping you are planning to do seems complicated, but be sure to have all gliders vet checked and consider a quarantine from your glider to make sure they are healthy and don't pass anything on to her.

Oh and :welcome2: to GC!!!
