I have been trying to find threads in this forum about hissing, but haven't had much luck related to what my little girl is doing. Could anyone shed some light on it? She has been hissing on and off for about 2 hours. She hisses in a series of 4 or 5.

She is pooping normally, also drinking and eating fine. She has been running in her wheel and very active. When she hisses, she is just looking around, or at me. She doesn't appear to be trying to pee, her tail is not up, and she is not straining or hunched over. Her cloaca looks fine, and her belly isn't discolored. I didn't get to see her pee when she first woke up tonight. Could it be a UTI, or might she just be in heat?

I would appreciate any feedback. I am not sure I can get her in to see her vet until Monday.

Thank you!

Where is her mate when she does this?

She may just be in heat. Have you tried to give her a treat to distract her? Has she been drinking?

What do you have in their drip pan? Can you see any pee color? When she poos, is it compacted? Several poos compacted together?

She has no mate. She has a female cagemate, with no other gliders in the home. I gave her a treat a little bit ago, and she is easily distracted. She is drinking the Critterlove just fine and has visited the water source once as I have been watching (water bottle, but I also have a silo for them). The poo is perfectly normal, not compacted or multiples. Just a perfect pellet, and after she came out of the pouch this evening, she pooed 4 times. I have a liner in the cage, so I wouldn't notice anything in the drip pan. I usually see them pee right after they get up, and can see the droplets on the liner, but Aspen got up early tonight, and I missed it. She has been really active tonight. More so than usual. She just has these moments of hissing, and she is always just looking around. Not at all trying to pee.

In addition, Aspen is just over a year old, as is her cagemate. Her cagemate has been in different places when she does this. Once, the cagemate was in the pouch. The cagemate hasn't been around her much tonight. She has had moments of hissing in the past, for a very short period of time. It seemed to be the same thing. No straining to pee or poo, just a little hissing. This time it is just a lot more.

I'm sorry I fell asleep... Did the hissing session ever stop? Let's see, Aspen and Willow, right?

It may not hurt to have her checked over by a vet. They'll need to do a fecal and urine test too.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks!

I looked back at your posts to see if I could determine how old your girls are and found the one above which indicates they should be around a year old assuming you got them as joeys. Looking further into you past posts, they should be around a year now.

So, I think Dawn is correct in that you are probably seeing some behavior associated with her heat cycle. You will probably see it again with your other girl. This is completely normal. Lucky for you it isn't as back as it would be with a male around wink

Thank you both for your replies smile

Yes, I have had them nearly a year, and did get them as joeys.

The hissing slowed way down before I went to bed last night. I slept in a little this morning, and they were already in the pouch when I got up. I haven't heard a peep. I will definitely monitor things today and tonight. Karen, I can only imagine how bad it would be if there was a male in the room!!!

Just an update. After that night, Aspen has not hissed at all. So she is fine smile

Thanks for everyone's input. Just that time of the month it looks like. And me a worried slave :D
