Late Saturday morning, Stewie started barking at Dot while she was in her pouch. My "glidey senses" told me to pull Dot out and check her over...

We don't normally hold her or cuddle her, she only has ever tolerated this in the almost 6 years we have had her, and only for a short time. We have learned the hard way to let her be...

But I decided I would take the bites in order to give her a look over...

I found a small spot of fur missing on her back(she and Stewie are doing fine, but still learning their boundaries) and when I started to feel her belly, I found it. A big skinny oval grape size lump. It's between her skin and muscle, on her left side.

It was already too late that day to take her in. So I opted to make an appointment early week. Dot was doing fine, good energy, bright eyed, Pott and poo normal.

Her appointment was today. She was tolerant of being examined, and I knew she was getting close to her tolerance. She was awake when they drew a sample and it was all puss. After she tested sample, they found infection(white blood cells), bacteria, and a bit of unknown matter. They thought it may be a lymph node, possibly swollen from a scratch(best case), it may be something worse (cancer). She sent us home with clavamox to administer for two weeks and back for a check-up. I'm supposed to check her lump daily to make sure it starts to shrink and not grow...

Prayer and fingers crossed for her...

I'll keep you posted...

Give Stewie goodies for bringing that to your attention.

Dawn, so very sorry to hear this about Sweet Dot. Stewie has apparently taken to his new mate and doesn't want anything to happen to her shakehead

Hoping it is nothing more than an infection that will clear up with meds.

Good thoughts for Dot, Stewie and of course you and hubs hug2

Thank you for all you well wishes!

Dot was a bit groggy the first 12 hours. My guess was the stress of her vet exam, and being awake when she normally sleeps.

I checked her lump the next day, and no change. Her playing and running around was better than normal, so was her excitement this morning. She's been playing with Stewie, and allowing him to groom her. She's also marking(normal) and following Stewie around.

This morning I'm happy to report the lump seems to be going down!

She is a grump by nature, and when it was time to give her meds this morning was pretty crabby. No bites or lunges, I think she was just being verbal about what was to come. Her favorite treat are mealies and I gave her two before she got her meds. With hubby's help, we got the antibiotics in her just as she was swallowing a big mouthful of mealies.

She got several mealies afterwards to get the bad taste out of her mouth, and was ready to get a drink and go back to bed...

I'll keep you posted every few days on her progress.

It's been a few days and it's easier to give Dot her meds. The lump hasn't shrunk much, but has changed shape. Not sure if that's good or bad, but I would think good since the antibiotics seem to be working.

She has a recheck a week from today. I'm thinking it will need to be removed.

Well, glad it is easier to give her meds on the good side of things.

Changing shape, I'm not sure what that means. Is it a hard lump? Guess we will have to wait and see what the vet says next week.

Still sending good thoughts your way hug2

Thank you Karen!

The lump seems to be more loose under her skin, I just medicated her. It's floating and seems to be in her abdomen right now. More round and harder, but not shrinking anymore from what I can tell.

I think I'll call the vet and ask about it floating around... I'll let you know...

Thank you Feather!

So we just got back home.

vet checked her out, was not concerned about the lump "floating". She said the lump will float in the sub-cue (I had to look it up to spell it in the manner in which it is correctly called) area under her skin.

So, according to the vet, the lump is now pea size. So it's shrank half size. The vet also said the lump will get hard as it shrinks and the antibiotics are doing their job. She may have to be on them an extra few weeks until the lump is gone.

Dot was an excellent patient today. I kept her mouth full of mealies...

She has become more tolerant of being handled to the point as long as there is a mealie in my fingers waiting on her to finish the one she's eating... The vet had to laugh at this. Her tech was surprised how Dot just sat on my hand and ignored everything around her while she had her treat... When we were done, I pointed to her travel cage and said "OK, Doc's done, let's go bye-bye". Both vet and Tech's jaw dropped when she went across the exam table and back to her travel cage... Neither could believe it...

So here we go again... My idea of pea size and vet's idea are two complete different opinions... shakehead

Yesterday hubby checked her lump and for his efforts got bit... I tried, and got the " I'll kill you look if you touch me"... I tried anyway and got crabbed at between bites of mealworms... Ok...

This morning I got a good feel... I think Dot is tender now... But I turned the lump a bit and it's oval again, smaller than when we discovered it, but not significantly. This is day 12 on antibiotics... I'm worried...

She's doing fine, maybe not playing as much, starting to sleep more. I haven't seen her on her wheel in 2 days. I'm turning the camera on tonight...

She gets around fine, and isn't extra crabby on her own... Stewie isn't playing with her in the last few days either... Still has an appetite...

I plan to take her to another vet next week I think... We are 1.5 hours from Dr Theresa Bradley in Belton, MO... I think it's time...

Dot could just be sick of all the the extra attention, which she doesn't really care for.

I would agree with you on that, but I'm able to hold her bare handed, still can't catch her in the cage, but she will retreat to a pouch and knows she will be rewarded... She's had more mealies in the last 12 days than she gets in 6 months of nail trimming...

She's fine till the lump is manipulated into a position to feel the size.

After A LOT of thought, and looking over the Belton Animal and Exotics website, I had to schedule her appointment online and have her prior medical record in hand. so I waited till this morning ( exactly 2 weeks after initial visit), and told them that the lump hasn't changed. My vet told me I had two choices... keep her on antibiotics for another 4 weeks, or bring her in for exploratory surgery ( shock explorartory? :thumbd: I don't think so!) Xray was never brought up... I already knew they didn't have a small enough ultrasound... Nor was bloodwrk mentioned... shakehead

At that point, I told them I wanted to take her to Belton. They emailed me her records, I printed them off.

I made an appointment online, filled out all the paperwork for Belton, printed, and then I called. They set us up for 3:30 PM tomorrow. They wanted to see her ASAP. vets in that area are only doing curbside pickup due to pandemic, so I have to send my tempermental, unpredictable, indifferent 6 year old glider in to the vet office by herself... I guess we'll see how that goes...

Prayers, virtual hugs, happy thoughts and positive vibes are all welcome at this point... I need to find my happy place.....

Well, long story short...

Because of the size of the mass, which has grown, Belton vet clinic came up with same prognosis as my regular vet.

Blood work won't be conclusive due to antibiotics in her system.

Ultrasound would be difficult due to her size. They would still have to do exploratory surgery...

Dr Bradley on vacation, and would have to wait on surgery till she came back. I was given the estimate for said surgery, and it was between $817 - $1286. Price depending on difficulty. They said it could go up from there if once they opened her up and found more. Dot's age also wasn't working for her even though she's healthy. They said that the surgery could do her more harm than good.

I'm to keep her on antibiotics for the next 4 weeks... Unless I opt for surgery which the soonest it could be done is 12 days... So we're back to square one...

I always thought if it was cancer, it needed to be tended to asap...

If what both vet clinics said is true, it's a wait and see game now...

I'm a bit torn.

That is such sad news. I hope she does well on the antibiotic. I know it's hard to decide what course to choose but just love her and do what you feel is best for her. cry

Dawn, I know you were hoping for better news as we all were. This is definitely a difficult decision, and I'm sure with the guidance of both vets, you will make the right one for Dot.

She's fine. Since we took her off her pain meds after 5 days, she's more normal. While on pain meds, she was jumping a lot from high places. Not in her character to do, and we didn't want her to injure herself more.

We have checked the lump and it hasn't changed.

We have decided that surgery for removal isn't an option. We've decided that quality of life is better than quantity. It's been a hard decision, but she's very healthy and at her age (6yrs) she's not old, but old enough that we think surgery would cause her more harm than good. If an artery is attached to the lump, she can't afford to lose that much blood. And the 2 different vets feel this may be the case.

She doesn't have lineage (I hate that word), we don't know if there were health problems in her family history. We also suspect that she may be inbred due to her temperament. We love her regardless, she is a beautiful standard grey.

I will continue to up date smile
