I have a pair of gliders being returned to me. They have had a fantastic home with one exception...

Their owner's 2 year old son is allergic to them. While most that have allergies to gliders generally seem to have problems with hives, this little guy has a unique allergy to their urine.

He just spent 18 days in the hospital with respritory issues and after extensive testing, it has been determined that somehow, the urine was getting airborne and forming as crystals in his lungs. He has been so ill that he has to stay at his grandma's house until they get the air ducts in the house cleaned and everything sanitized.

Has anyone ever heard of this type of reaction to glider urine before? His mom argued with the doc over and over again that it just couldn't be possible but the tests were conclusive.

We all know that new gliders should be quarentined but there has been quite a bit of debate as to how much good it actually does. This little boy's illness is proof that you can not totally quarentine any animal. (unless in a totally different building). Things with gliders can/are airborne and can contaminate one another even if in different parts of the house.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

T, I haven't heard of this, but I'm sure it's possible, although I wouldn't think the quantities could be very large, he must be exceptionally sensitive to things-and I would think any pet would pose as much of a risk in that case.

I think the best person to be able to reply to this would be schlep-since that's his field. You might want to PM with a link here, so we can get his ideas.

I'm sorry your little ones have to come back-they don't know what they did wrong. hug2

This is very interesting… scientifically speaking, I feel terrible for the little boy, his family, and those gliders…

just going on what you have indicated… something form the urine that becomes air born… extending on that hypothesis… it could be something the gliders are ingesting and passing…may even be the way their bodies process what ever it is… in any event as none of us have heard of this before it can be assumed that it is a rare occurrence…

Oh, more info on the pair...they have been on the basic BML diet the whole time.

As for the home, they have dogs and cats and not had any allergy problems present.

Definately a mystery!

I was asked to respond to this post. I'm not out looking to argue or start anything. I'll post my opinion, which everyone is free to discount as another opinion from an uninformed learner. It's hard to know how to respond to this post. No doubt the information above is the feedback Dancing received, but...

Having taken care of two-year-olds myself in the ICU from asthma and illnesses aggravated by allergies, I'm at a complete loss for how anyone could determine or prove that glider urine crystals got in the lung, or caused the problem. I doubt there is any such test to prove that. Airborne urine traveling as a crystal? On the 1-10 scale on the weird-stuff-o-meter that's a 13!

During severe asthma, we seldom know what exactly triggered the situation. Burning leaves, animal dander, smoke, common cold, sinusitis, etc. all can be suspected of being contributing triggers. Even when we have x-rays showing pneumonia in the lung, we treat toward the group of likely possible bacteria and never really know for sure which germ was the culprit.

I know of no way to measure or test for something like proving a urine crystal being in the lung. I am doubtful that such a test exists. I can imagine that either a physician or parent who suspects that a new pet had anything to do with a scary episode would want to eliminate the POSSIBLE offending agent. I don't blame them for wanting to send the glider back under the circumstances. Perhaps the explanation given suffered a bit in translation. But to state that the explanation above is absolutely the reason strikes me as far-fetched. Hives are certainly possible. So are breathing problems from a pet. The urine crystal found in the lung thing is a tough method of action to accept, and really I would think is difficult or impossible to prove. I hope the little guy recovered fully and does well. Anyone who is that allergic is likely to have future breathing issues even though kept clear of gliders and as many possible triggers as possible. I wish them good luck and God speed.

Thank you, schlep! I thought it doubtful, if there's no other animal allergy, but I'm not a doc, so asked the most likely person to know! thanks
