Sue1, lol I thought I was the only one with the problem of Ensure and the icecube trays. I run the cube upside down under water for about 10-15 seconds, HOT WATER, and then like you, squeeze the underneath and they pop out as easy as can be. The plastic bag deal sounded kinda cool...but then youd be going through tons of baggies every night, where as the icecube tray will last forever and can be washed and used over and over again.

Im so happy to know that there have been many vets who have said that Ensure is a suitable diet for our suggies.

Hiya Srlb :
I am not adding vitamins to the ensure when I talked about the vitamins was before the ensure that is why I switched over to the ensure diet because I couldn't get them to eat anything that I added the vitamins to I tried bml and a fresh food diet they wouldn't eat it unless I left the vitamins out
lol at the ice cube tray I have put a few holes in mine trying to get it out with a knife

Ribbit, Ribbit, Ribbit.......(That's "HI" in frog language)

I feed my crew the BML diet......well, almost**.......and have had good results. Occasionally I've had a night where they weren't very hungry; but they have never gone on a BML strike like some have described!!! (**Note: I add one jar of sweet potato baby food or sweet potato and corn baby food to each batch of BML. My gliders like the extra flavor better than the plain BML)

I have fed my gliders the Ensure a couple of times just to see if they liked it, which they did, but don't use it on a regular basis.

As to your diet, it's a bit difficult to tell without more specific details; but one thing that did strike me is you might be a little short on protein and I don't see any mention of fruits???

I certainly agree that a good diet is of NO benefit if they won't eat it. On the other hand, my experience with 2 yr. olds is that after skipping a meal or two, they usually are significantly less selective than when they have a full belly!!!

lol yup randy I agree my 2 year old has skipped a few meals and then there are the days of having the same thing 2 days in a row
as for the gliders they do get fruits and veggies and meal worms everynight along with the ensure/yogurt mix one other question that I have never got a straight answer on is about yogurt is it ok or is it not ? some ppl have said you can give them some and it's ok but umm what is some I mean I know what a smidge and a dab even a dollup might be lol but how much is ok are they lactose intolerent sorry a little off the subject of the ensure .
I mostly use the ensure as a way for them to eat the vitamins and it has been handy I have had to leave town a few times and knew I wouldn't be back in time for glider dinner I set out some plain ensure, dry ceareal and bugs so they would atleast have something to eat untill i got home the next morning

As far as I know, yogurt is just fine for gliders. I feed mine a TBS per animal about once a week plus what little they get in the BML. Whether that is too much or too little, I haven't the froggiest???

Bourbon put me on to an interesting article about Lactose Intolerance by Caroline MacPherson. Click here to take a look at it!!

I am a little behind on the whole Darcy diet thing, but I did have a question. My suggies are on the BML diet, doing just fine. They eat pretty much everything I give them. However I would like to try this diet, for a little variety. My suggies are not heavy, and they run around like crazy every night. Would giving them the ensure diet say, every third night totally mess them up? I would just slowly introduce it at first, of course, and gradually increase the amount of ensure. Also, do I have this right, is the diet plan, 1 tbs of ensure, 1 tsp of veggies, 1 tsp of fruits, and insects? So basically I am replacing the BML cube with the ensure cube? Thanks for your help!

I know up here in Canada we have ice cube bags at our dollar stores. You get 20 bags for a buck and each bag holds 12 cubes i beleive. You pour the ensure into the top and clip them closed. You then just tear open each cube as you need them.

Hey guys!

Well I guess the good news is that we know a lot of people are reading the GliderVet Newsletter! And quite a few people have written in this month, most of them simply wanting to learn more. I have personally printed off much info for Dr C on the question of this diet and of course she has her own sources available that are not available to the general public. vets will have dissenting opinions on issue of diet, no doubt ... and while I cannot speak for Dr C, I personally thank you all for respecting her opinions on the matter. I too am anxious to see her wrap up on this topic ... I hope to see her later today as a matter of fact. A few things I can say are that she is not going to get deep into technical issues as that is not what the newsletter is about. She simply wants people to make well informed decisions.

I would also like to publicly state how much admiration I personally have for Saharanfox and what she has done for Darcy! Her story is inspirational and her dedication surpasses most. Dr C's decision to express an opinion on this topic is in no way personal as even Dr C has expressed admiration for the Darcy story. I told Dr C that I thought that if she and Donna ever met, I thought they would hit it off tremendously as they are both so passionate about wildlife rescue and rehab ...

When we met Dr C, she was likely the most experienced vet with sugar gliders in our county and to make things even better, she is mobile. As she specializes in exotics, she thinks that actually seeing the environment they are kept in goes a long way to advising on treatments. And of course since she started working with us, her glider experience has grown quite a lot. She's also been asked to review/edit the sugar glider section for the Merck Veterinary handbook.

It was stated above that vet's can be found on both the pro and con side of this issue. My question is this: how experienced are these vets with sugar gliders or exotics in general? My dog's allergy vet is tops in her field (another Cornell grad), but her experience with exotics is limited. So imho, the issue isn't just about vet opinions, but certain vet opinions.

I think if the diet has been used longer and with apparent success, Dr C would be more favorable .. she is an open minded person after all. And knowing her as I do, she has a personal bent toward fresh food diets. I think this is why she's never ventured to get into a discussion on BML ... BML has been around long enough with positive results, nuff said. I've baby sat for a plethora of Dr C's rescued critters over the years and of course, she gives us the diet to use, and all of the animals .. squirrels, opposums, hatchling tortoises, owls are all fed predominately fresh foods ... that is her preference and she has experienced great success in using such diets with exotics.

Soooo, in a few more weeks, we'll see Dr C's wrap on the topic, but you guys have been having so much fun since her first article, I simply couldn't help but jump in mid stream!

P.S. To Randy! You've done a great job to stimulate a very good thread here! Viva La Randy, too!
