I've been having problems with a bunch of fruit flies getting on the gliders food at night. We have them all over the house. They hang around by the cage waiting all day for me at night to put food in the cage and then they swarm to it. I'm not sure how to get rid of them and keep them away from the cage. We have fly catchers hanging all over the house but I rarely see any on them. Any suggestions?

pesky little pests arent they.
I have tried unsuccessfully to get my suggies to catch them for me. I thought it would be good exercise and perhaps a tasty little snack. I had high hopes for Princess for as a young joey she would fling herself through the air after them, but she soon tired of the game. I have begged, pleaded and shown them how, acting out the jumping and swiping and grabbing. They absolutely refuse, informing me that it is my problem not theirs.
I have found that I can vacuum most of them out of the air with my shop vac. Take the attachment off and sneak up on them with just the hose.
It is crucial that you eliminate any moist area where they can breed. I once dropped a piece of soiled fleece in the bathroom sink in the suggies room. No one uses that bathroom and I did not retrieve it for the wash for a couple of days. By then it had been colonized and had to be thrown away. Any leaking water bottle provides a breeding ground for them. Although the food attracts them, it seems to be the moisture that allows them to breed.
Good luck
Godspeed

Fruit Flies are the absolute worst! We had them this summer from a canteloupe (did you know that a soft spot on a melon and other fruit can indicate that fruit flies have laid eggs there?) I have also used the vaccuum to suck them up. It is imperative to not leave any crumb, wet spot, anything that they can breed in around. Also, please for the safety of your gliders, remove the fly strip! You can make a trap for the fruit flies with a 2 liter (or even a smaller) pop bottle. Cut the portion of it above the top of the label off and then turn that over so that the mouth of the bottle is on the inside. it should fit snug. Now, fill this with a little fruit juice and even a piece of fruit if you want. The little pests will fly in but can't get out. I waited till there was enough in there, took it to the sink and filled it with water to drown them and then started over after I flushed the ones that I had just killed.

All three of my girls have miniature fly swatters that they keep in the cage with them at all times. My granddaughter calls them "fishwaters".

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to try the pop bottle idea. The fly tapes we have around aren't anywhere close to the cage. I don't want them to get stuck.

Besides checking around the cage, check all your drains, as they are notorious for being a breeding ground for them! The way you find out if you have them coming out of there, it cover the opening with some clear packing tape, but cut little holes in it so air can pass through. As they come up, they get stuck. There is special stuff you need to buy (think you can only get it online) to clear them up. You have to remove the source or you will never get rid of them. We get them from time to time (usually has to do with a piece of fruit we brought into the house). But yes, they are pesky!

Okay, don't laugh! But, this is what we got as a gift: Electric Fly Swatter Boy does it work!!!! Also, you can pick one up for like 4 or 5 bucks at a place called Harbor Freight..... sometimes less.... Edited to add:I found it!! For $2.99 Harbor Freight Swatter We had gone out of town and came back and 'someone' left bananas on the counter.... Yuck! We set the bottle up, just as Becki suggested and my son took the swatter and it was On! What a masacre! He just simple held the swatter over the bottle and Zapity! Zap... ZAP!! It sounds like one of the outside bug zappers when they hit!! Kinda Sad, but he had a good time, and got rid of those pesky little things all in one afternoon!

Im thinking about getting a venis fly trap to put in there too. The pitcher plants work better, same family of carnivorous plants, but these entice the flies to the bottom of a well with a sugary sweet smelling excretion that they get stuck in and die as the plant digest them...

Where do you get them? (pitcher plants) we get flies all summer long and would love to have one. I have a 1 year old that reminds me of tommy from rugrats how she hides food all over and her cups of juice. I find them in the weirdest places like inside the hide a bed we don't even use it.
