Hi all. wave Not sure if this is the right forum category for this question, but here's my question...

It's a coooold winter here in Upstate New York, and to save on heating bills my roommates and I turn the heat down at night while we're all asleep. When we're home during the day and evening, the heat is typically at 70 degrees.

I was wondering what is the lowest I could turn the heat down to in the middle of the night, while my gliders are up and running around, so that we could save a little money, but the gliders would still be comfortable? I've been turning it down to 65 at night, but was wondering if 62 or even 60 would be alright for them?

65 is the coldest it is supposed to be for a glider, but there are these things on suncoast that are like little ceramic heat coils that just screws into a light fixture (make sure there is no lampshade) and they should keep them nice and toasty without running up your bill. i have never used it, cause i dont have for heat in my apt. But i would try to find others who have used it and see what they say,

one thing to consider..... is because the thermostat says 65 it's 65 or close at that area a bedroom could be as cold as 60 deg if not colder over what the thermo is sitting on. Close off a room and it'll get colder unless you have a large enough gap under the door so the return can pull the air out and refresh it with warm/cold air.

Get a separate thermometer and put it in their room. Make sure that the room doesn't get any colder than 65* at any given time. Warmer is better for gliders, but too cold can be very harmful... Using a space heater can save money while keeping the gliders warm... Again, make sure you have a thermometer so you can keep track of the actual temperature in the gliders' room.

I bought a small digital space heater for my babies room...It has a thermostat so you can set a constant temperature, has a 10 hour timer and even oscillates...Got it at Target for $25.00....very energy efficient!

It also cost's more to turn your heat down at night then it does to keep it at one temperature. It takes more work to get up to 70 from 60 or 65 then it does to maintain the temperature at 70.

I have a space heater in the Dinning (Glider) Room. I keep it about 70 in there all the time during winter. I use one of those digital thermostates so I can watch the temp.

i would not risk it at lower than 75 i keep my house on 75 and run an oil radieant heater also. if you must lower it do it during the day but not lower than 70. in the day at least their sleeping and keep each other warm just put a bunch of fleece blankies in the pouch and use a double fleece pouch its alot cheaper to pay for heat than risk losing a glider to pnumonia or death.

if u have 2 in pouch then they will need it warmer when they come out of pouch. 80 degrees otherwise you will risk those babies dying. they must have it warmer than the adults. if u can keep th e gliders even in one smaller room and get a oil radiant heater i keep mine on low and it warms the room which i keep on 75 anyway but use it for xtra warmth. i set it on about 3 and put the 2 buttons up keep it in the center of the room away from anything that could catch fire. it is the safer heater and uses very little electric.

75 degrees!! Holy Cow! how can you handle that? Up until I got married I kept my house at 62, not because I'm cheap, but I'm always hot. Now it's at 67-69 and usually complaining about how hot it is. BTW I have heat emitters above all my critters cages. Short tail opossums require nothing below 70, so their cages are usually 76-82. And my gliders are around 72ish.
