Finally, after months of waiting on my USDA packet and months of procrastination, I am finally on my way to being licensed. I have my packet filled out and have an appt. for an in home vet inspection on Feb. 21st. Now. . .what are they going to be checking for? I have about 23 gliders, 1 scarlett macaw, 2 cats, 2 leopard geckos, 2 degus, 3 ferrets, and 1 albino pine snake.

Lynsie, maybe you should be having a zoo inspection instead of a USDA inspection.

Wow Lynsie, I thought you already were licensed!
I don't know about where you are but...here, the cages have to be up off the floor. I know when we were all there, your cages sat on the floor. You will need some sort of stand for all of them. You need to have their foods in their own cabinet, not mixed in with the human food. I'm not sure about everything else

Okay, I just contacted Desmond Pet Depot about getting stands for the cages. And I am sure that I can find a cabinet for thier food. Can their food be with other animal food, like the cat food?
Teresa, when they come to your house, do they inspect the bird, ferrets, and whatever else you have? Or just the suggies?

I would check and double check that you have every piece of paper handy that they could possibly want to see or have a copy to keep. Agencies like paper....lots of pieces of paper. I am sure they gave you some sort of list of what documentation they want to see. I would have a little extra...a written record of the meals for the past week or month, vet records, a record and description of the wellness checks you do on a daily basis, of the time you spend socializing them, playing with them, enrichment activities, educating new owners...that kind of thing. Something the inspector can pull out if he/she goes back to the office and has to justify the decision to grant you a permit. Just my opinion, I really dont know. My experience with government agencies has been in other areas, but they always like records and pieces of paper. lol God luck and keep us posted

The only paperwork I have on them is USDA papers from those who had them, any documents from the vets for the gliders that have been to the vet, lineages, and on excel I have a list of all thier joeys that were born and sold here. Are they going to check the vaccinations on my cats? I don't use the same vet on my cats as I do on my suggies(the one who is coming). I can't remember if it has been more than a year or not.

just remember how government works.....think DMV and then some......what they said above about papers is absolutley right....take the info you do have and make it LOOK really well organized and detailed....also add things like emergency contact numbers, the local 24 hour emergency room, and the info content of your website in print will show them you are not some fly by nite shenanigan (sp?).....good luck

Oddly enough...the thing that our agent said that most people don't have is proper lighting for the inspection. They need to be able to see to do the inspection properly. Luckily my lights are controlled by a dimmer switch. This gives me the ability to keep them low for the gliders and still be able to turn them up when needed. I keep my worms in the fridge with human food. Not a word was said about it.
good luck Jackie

Lynsie. About the stands... I didn't buy any. What we did was make a shelf that sits off the floor about 2 feet. This allows plenty of space under the cages for storage tubs for toys and such. This might be an option for you or not. Since I own my home, I was able to mount these "shelves" to the walls but you may not be able to. Think of Judie's glider room. If you picture it, you will remember, her glider cages are all off the floor. I don't know if the carpet will be an issue or not. You may have to have some sort of carpet protector. The inspector will let you know about that. Here is a link that may help you to figure out what all you need. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ac/publications.htmlMost of that information is about dogs and cats but, you're pretty glider smart and can make the adjustments to fit the glider situation. The cages you have are fantastic and absolutely no problem there (except they have to be off the floor). At that link, it will tell you about lighting, ventalation etc. There are also some forms http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ac/publications/forms/aph7005.pdfkhttp://www.aphis.usda.gov/ac/publications/forms/aph7006.pdf(those are both for dogs and cats but can be modified for the gliders) you can print off for your record keeping. I would print them off and go through and fill them out for all your gliders BEFORE your inspection. Like Angel said, they LOVE their paperwork!

Oh, I happened to think... If you have any thing, such as food or cleaning supplies, not in their original conatiners, the containers they are in must be labled. Example, if you use Wambaroo High Protien suppliment. It comes in a bag inside a box. I put mine in a tupperware container to help keep it fresh and to keep any bugs out of it. I took the box, cut it open and taped it to the outside of the tupperware container. If you use a spray bottle with a bleach solution in it. Make sure you use a permenant marker and label the spray bottle. Also, have a seperate place for your dirty pouches and stuff. Not sitting next to the clean stuff.

Thanks guys. I don't think the shelves are an option. I am going to have to move out of here in a few months anyways. Laura said the stands are only like 3/$45 so I am just going to try to get them. I also have plastic mats under the cages. I have a window in the room for ventilation and good lighting. I will have to mark my containers though, thanks Teresa! So far the vet is coming on the 21st then I will have to send my packet in and wait a while longer til the USDA inspector comes. So I still have a little time to prepare the paperwork.

Okay, so far: *Cages off of floor *Floor protectors under cages-check *Window for ventilation-check *Good lighting-check *Food in seperate cabinet *Label food containers *Make up lots of paperwork *no trash can(I just have a little one for fleece scraps but I will remove it anyway) *Make sure no dropping in food The aphis 7005 form does not work I have received some of the Aphis 7006 forms from the breeders. For the ones that I do not have one on, do I need to fill it out with the breeders info or just mine? What else am I missing??

The biggest thing for my inspector is that the animals & their enviornment is clean. All the food has to be in air tight containers, labeled & dated. You'll have to do an inventory of your animals & label your cages so the inspector can go in & readily identify any of the gliders.
My inspector really isn't interested in medical records & such (we still keep them in order). He just wants to know when we sell an animal, to whom, the lineage, etc... You'll get USDA forms for that though.

I got name tags on all of my cages and lineages on almost all of my gliders. I also have a record of thier joeys and who they were sold to.
I know a lot of people think that I am WAY over my limit on breeding females, but to tell the truth I only have 4 breeding pairs right now. I have:
Kashmir & Katrina- breeding Kair & Bear- breeding Naira & Cheiko- breeding Sayuri & Katsu- breeding Keoni & Nani- not together, Nani is too young Eden & Veeda- Eden it too young to breed Naomi & Dawson- just getting to about breeding age, 6 mos Kasi- single Daddy, Carmela, Petunia, & Kairina- non-breeding colony.
None of my other animals breed

Hi Lynsie! Your inspector will probably be the same as mine. He covers IL and WI. His name is Chad Moore. REALLY nice guy. His voice mail is 703-812-6932 if you have any questions, I'm sure he will answer them promptly. His major things are: Cages off the floor, all cages/food containers (dry and frozen) in appropriate containers, all cages very clean and tidy. He will inspect the cages itself and most of your gliders (since it will be his first visit he will probably look at all of your gliders). Make sure you have the vet inspection form all filled out before he comes. All other paperwork (Form 7019 and 7020 he will bring with him and give to you). You don't need a full inventory of all your animals on paper before he gives you the forms. Also, he is REALLY picky about the glider's nestbox or house and wheel that you have. Make sure that they are all clean, especially if they're wooden (the nest boxes). He is also very thorough and will ask alot of questions about diet, husbandry (how often do you clean the cage/wheel/ toys/etc.) what type of cleaning solution do you use, etc. I really don't think you will have a problem though! If you have any more questions, let me know! I'll be happy to help

Thanks Katrina! I use pouches which get washed everyother week and I have stealth wheels in all of my cages. I got all the papers in the USDA packet filled out and the vet comes on the 21st. Once I get the vet inspection done I will send my packet in and wait for a response. I can't wait to get this done with, lol.

Had my vet check yesterday and everything went great. All I need to do is look over my papers one more time to make sure I have everything right, then send them in. So I have seen a lot of places where it says that I need to have Aphis form 7019 and 7020 filled out for all my gliders, but then again a lot of people say I don't need to since I don't have my license yet. So do I? If so, I have a few more questions.

You should have a disposition form for each of the gliders you have purchased and sold, both.. but as this is your first inspection, he may give you a little slack on that.. but make sure it's done for next time.
My inspector checked for food in bins, fridge/freezer things separate from people stuff, clean cages, and off the floor.. that was about it. He never once asked to see any of my animals, and didn't ask how many I had for the first several inspections.
You said that people say you're way over the limit to get your license.. and you are really. Whether or not they're old enough to breed or put together as a breeding pair/trio/etc it doesn't matter. If you have 4 or more females at all. But no worries.. I had 20 some gliders before I even knew about USDA and my inspector was cool about it. He just said to be sure I keep accurate and thorough records on everybody from then on.
You'll do great Lynsie, no worries.. it can be nerve wracking, but don't stress. :-) My floors were always tile or cement, so IDK about the carpet thing.. take Judie's advice about mats for sure, can't be too safe.
Oh, and be aware.. that you'll have to have ANOTHER inspection and suspend all sales when you move in to your new house.. they have to inspect each location before you are allowed to sell again.

.. I think it took about 2 weeks once they received my packet to send me something saying my inspector would be contacting me to make the first inspection appointment.. I'd say by the end of the month probably...

Not sure about your area, but it took about 3 months before I got my first inspection after sending in the paperwork. My inspector is theonly one that covers several states though.

I have a question. I don't know if it's based on your location or if it's blanket because it's USDA, but I've been told that pet stores have to be on their own septic system in order to be licensed. Is this true for private breeders too? I've also been told that stores are required to have their own euthanization chamber in order to be licensed. Again, is this true for private breeders? I know the classes of licenses are different, I'm just not sure if the rules are.
