We rescued a glider today from a home that no longer could keep him. All we know is he's aprox 4 yrs old and he had a mate and the previous owner sepereated them and gave his mate to one home and him (Pumpkin) to another. he has an enormous blad spot on his head and all the way back to his shoulder. I'm assuming stress from being taken from his mate. He has been alone since May as we were told. They did handle him and fed him glider pellets fruit and yoggies.
Maybe you guys that have experience with streesed gliders can see the pics and inform us if this loss of hair is due to stress. he will be getting a vet check and also Neutered soon. James

we're hoping to introduce him to Rockie,Princess, and scooter once we get him Neutered and a clean bill of health. He sits in his little pouch and cries out and I'm sure he's calling fir his mate. It's really sad that the original owner would seperate them like that. James

One of my gliders got stressed like this after I moved. She kept rubbing her head on my other glider and her hair was falling out. I began spending more time with her alone during the day. Then I would let the two be together at night for playtime. Her hair has grown all the way back in. My other glider has been having teeth problems recently and it seems that when she is not feeling well Cass will start to stress and lose hair again. As soon as my sick glider got on meds Cass's hair started to come back.

We have an appt. with the doc on Friday morning. He's scheduled for a checkup and if he is in good shape, he's getting neutered so he can go live with his new family.
He is such a sweetie and is SO lonely. He cries at night and barks/hisses for me when I walk by him. After I left him this morning, he barked for almost an hour for me.....I felt so guilty when James told me. He seems to want desparately to have someone. It breaks my heart to hear him cry, but he's going to have to stay by himself for a few days until we get a clean bill of health for the sake of the other babies.
He certainly likes all of the new foods we have for him here. He cleaned both his plates last night and rode the food cup into the cage eating when I fed him tonight.
Funny how it takes about 30 seconds to love one isn't it?

thats so sad. how cruel people can be. it is stress im sure he is in good shape. i would at least put his cage next to another glider so they can talk thru the cage. as long as they dont touch each other it should be fine. even in the same room. before u take him in to the vet give him love and try to spend alot of time with him poor guy.
I have to disagree, the new glider should be quarantined for 30 days or until he gets a clean bill of health from a vet, Try giving a tiny stuffed animal to be his pouch buddy. This has calmed several gliders I have.

I'm with you Shelleriddle! Somehow my Piper got trichomonads from my Peepers when I brought Piper home. I was keeping them in separate cages across the room from each other, and had not allowed them to meet or share the same food dishes or swap cages. Peepers had had two clean fecals a month apart since her last bout with trichs and Piper had a clean fecal and well check within a few days of me bringing her home. But a week and a half after I got her, she showed up with trichs and the person I got her from NEVER had them in her home. I know Piper must have gotten them from Peepers (Peepers was my only glider since we had lost Jeepers about two months before) but I don't know how.
Keep them in separate rooms and wash your hands between feeding and playing with them and make sure food dishes are sanitized between them.

I have to say that I agree with the quarentine period also. It's hard when you have a glider who is so desperately lonely, but the risks you would run if you put them together too soon is not worth it in the long run.

My Oscar looked like that a couple of months ago. He'd been alone since last May too. I got him a friend and within 3 weeks, no more baldness!

James, I'm almost completely certain that the baldness is due to overgrooming caused by stress and loneliness. Hopefully, once he's been introduced to new companions, the stress and loneliness will go away and his fur will start to grow back in. When I got my Gizmo, he was very bald, like your little guy and after I introduced him to Allira, within a month his fur was growing back in. He's never overgroomed again in the almost 2 years I've had him. Here are before & after pix of Gizmo
He looks like my little rescue, Chance. Dancing told me to add 1/8 tsp WHP and 1 tsp yogurt to his dinner each night, and he is already looking much better! I have had him a little over 2 weeks now, and his hair is already growing back. It is amazing what a little love and diet supplementing can do!
There are some pics of Chance on my website to give you a better idea of what he did look like:
Imnot a vet but it does sound like its stress related. I know its hard not to want to add him into your group right now but its for the best to wait the quarintine period.

Thanks everyone for the answers and your opinions and advice. We will keep little pumpkin seperated from the others for a while and while he is at the vet we're going to have him tested for mites just in case. I (we) do agree it seemed so cruel to have taken him form his mate as the previous owners did I guess they just didn't know not to. anyhow he will be taken good care of here and once he gets a good bill of health and Neutered and the ususal seperation from the females until he can't reproduce he'll have his own family soon and hopefully he'll be happy and his hair does grow back providing he doesn't have any sort of mite or parasite. We have a really good vet that has alot of knowledge on Sugar Gliders so he'll get pumpkin all fixed up.

OK.....we went to the vet this morning......Pumpkin was in good health and was neutered as well. Dr. Prince feels that his loss of hair most likely started as stress from being separated from his mate and perhaps has continued due to neurosis.......he has ordered a fungassay test to make sure this is the case......we should have the results back early next week. He is up and about and in good spirits.......we'll let you all know what the outcome of his test is.......

It just breaks my heart how some people treat animals... thinking that families can be broken up without there being ANY kind of paybacks... especially colony animals like suggies! Poor baby DOES have himself a good, loving home with you two...so his fate is turning to the better!
I'm hoping the tests all come back NEGATIVE. Maybe he can have some SUPERVISED playtime with the girls while he's waiting for his neutering to "set in"? That will probably help bolster his spirits, too!

well, in the meantime, make sure he has things that will keep him interested and hi mind off of being bored. New toys and games might help.. kinda like having an only child.. keep him busy. what a sweet little guy though... hes lucky to have found you

Ok here's Pumplins update. The vets office just called and said all tests were negative. Meaning no worms or mites that may had caused his extra baldness. He seems to be getting some of his hair back so it all looks that maybe stress and diet was the culprit and I guess over grooming. He is doing fine and still is starved for attention. Cutest little thing is his security is a shoe string tied to top of his cage. he pulls this string into his pouch and if you take it out he'll grab it and pull it right back in. Hopefully in another week he'll be put with our small colony of 3.

Aww sounds so sweet, thanks for the update! Shoe lace, huh? :head scratch: now that's a sure sign he needs a companion - kind of like Wilson the volley ball, the shoe string has become his friend
I am so happy he's found you guys and will lead out the rest of his life happily!! I cannot believe how insensitive people can be toward animals' needs, esp animals they are familiar with!! Give him lots of attention from YOU for the time being - bondingpouches, whatever, everything. PLEASE keep us posted and put pics on your "to do" list

I was browsing through the Pet Dept at Wal-mart and found the CUTEST hedgehog dog toy! They had both grey and brown, and were squeaky toys. I doubt that Pumpkin would be heavy enough to make it squeak, even if he landed full force on it. It was probably a little large in size....but it would've made a cute companion for him.
Maybe it's a GOOD thing that there's a bit of distance between us...?

It's probably a good thing there's distance or you'd have our kids SO spoiled it wouldn't even be close to funny! (off subject) We got some black fleece and glow in the dark constellations and planets for Cassio's cage. I'm almost done with the curtain for the back.......we made a Cassiopeia to put in it too.......I can't wait to put the whole thing together so I can make pics and send them to you...or maybe you can just come to the house and see it when you are at Sharons? Pumpkin has two stuffed bunnies and a ton of toys.......he still prefers to be with Mom, though.....he likes Dad too, but would rather be with me.....I guess b/c every other day I put a tshirt of mine in his cage/swap them out so they still smell like me........ Last night he & Rockie visited for a little while and seemed to get along really well. When it's their turn for tent time, we are going to put him in too and see how it goes.
