Neutering Females? #295335

Okay, this may be a dumb question, but are females ever neutered? I will be getting my very first baby gliders soon, and I am not sure if I will have two or three, or what the sexes might be. I definitely want no babies, so if I have males and females then I will have to neuter. What if I end up with two males and one female? It seems like it would be easier to neuter the one female rather than the two males. Is that possible?

Female sugar gliders aren't spayed because it is dangerouse (I'm guessing because they are so small).

Some vets will tell you it's possible, And it probably is. But it's phenomenally intrusive and dangerous. In most cases you'll likely just end up with a dead glider and a hurting heart. In any case, you would still have an issue because having two un-neutered males together is almost always (I have heard of a few rare exceptions) a phenomenally bad idea. They will fight to extreme injury and sometimes death over dominance and mating rights. In any circumstance if you don't want to breed you should get the males neutered and let the female be.

Because sugar gliders have a bifurcated reproductive system (double parts - so in females: two vaginae, two uteri, two sets of ovaries), spaying a female glider is very difficult, very complicated and very risky, not to mention expensive. The preferred "norm" is to get the males neutered because it's a relatively simple process and everything is external - a lot less risk during surgery thumb

It is very dangerous to spay a female. It is an invasive procedure, and can result in death. The surgery to neuter a male is simple, and a lot less expensive.

Oh, okay, then I definitely won't try to have the female spayed. I wouldn't want to hurt anybody!

It's a fair question and you're hardly the first to have asked it. smile

If a female was to be spayed to surgically remove her ovaries and adjacent parts of the uterus it would be to invasive for such a small animal and to risky shakehead

It's only recommended to Neuter a male to prevent breeding thumb

I second Everyone else's posts, and also add that the boys just get their poms separated from the sperm organ versus with girls, they would have to completely remove the uterus, and possibly the ovaries, not just tie the tubes as they do in humans. Also, with an animal so small, where do you think they would put the stitches to close the girl back up? Usually, my vet says, they have to put the stitches inside the marsupials pouch, which complicates the entire surgery, as well as the recovery, not to mention the effect on the animal's mental health during recovery. This doesn't, of course, bring up the issues of the natural bacteria that are present in the pouch and what would happen to the balance of the bacteria if cleaned out during surgury, and the subsequent use of an ecollar to keep the female from removing the stitches, thus being unable to clean the area completely, and allowing certain bacteria to bloom (bad bacteria is only a good bacteria that has multiplied into a niche where it is not being controlled, either by cleaning or by the natural other bacteria in it's environment).

Now, if this is a question of money being the issue, well, it sounds as though you are getting baby gliders, and until they are a certain weight, they can't get neutered anyway. Also remember that gliders generally start breeding at about one year of age, so saving money up for the neutering would be possible.

Another possiblity, if they are older than joeys, does your breeder offer a discount on neutering before you get them? Sometimes, waiting just a little while longer to be able to pay for them to be neutered is the best idea.

Long post short, too many complications for females to be spayed!

And nobody is jumping on you, so please don't feel that way. Thank you for informing yourself of what is right for the health and safety of your glider!

Sorry, but I have to disagree with this statement... Gliders become sexually mature at an AVERAGE of one year old; however, the reality is that MANY females become sexually mature at around 5-6 months oop and can & will breed at that age if housed with an intact male. For safety's sake, it is best to have the male neutered by the time he is 4 months oop, at the latest. Very many glider owners, myself included, have been caught unawares by young, pregnant females because of this misinformation...

I think one of the most disturbing things I ever heard was of a vet that would "clean out" a female's pouch to the point of scarring it. The female is then unable to support joeys in the pouch, in fact the pouch is so hard the joeys can't get in it.... ugg!
