Being aware of your Sugar Gliders patterns and having an Ecolar available can not be stressed upon enough!
Last night when I had my babies out for play time, I noticed that Sam was just not acting quite himself. He is a funny little fella and chooses to have his own way most of the time and if I don't allow him that he will make this little squeaky noise to let me know that he's displeased with something that I'm doing. Well last night he did that little squeaky noise, and ran off and hid. Usually he will come back out and get over it, then jump in my shirt and play with his little toy rings, but last night he stayed away.
I figured he was having one of his more stubborn nights so I just let him be.
I woke up around 4 this morning with this strange feeling, I went in to look in on my gliders, there Sam was curled up in a ball attacking his cloaca...I immediately got him into an ecolar, called my vet and we were there within an hour.
He has a UTI, was put on an antibiotic, and pain meds.

I can't stress enough to everyone that getting to know your gliders personality, and being aware of the smallest changes can save serious problems or even their life if we are not prepared with having an ecolar and a vet!

Linda who is it here that sells them already made up? I was thinking or just ordering several to have on hand as I don't know about how good I would do at trying to make one myself(Idon't even know what moleskin is???)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes for my sweet little Sam. He's on cloud9 right now because he gets to be in my bra all by himself today.....

You can contact Xfilefan, she sells premade ecolars. Here is a link that gives step by step instructions on how to make one.

Oh my gosh Linda! I hope Sam is feeling better soon! I agree, I have caught many things early (with all of my animals) just by knowing their normal tendancies and behaviors. It definitely makes a difference! Sending lots of hugs and prayers for a quick recovery! hug2 hug2 hug2

We have e-collars in a couple of different places, including the first aid kit for people. Everyone knows where they are. Coopie is another good example of a need of this. You never, ever know. You should be prepared for anything, even things you don't think could ever happen.

Linda, hugs right back at you!

Sam gave me a scare earlier today. I tried giving him some gliderade, he drank a little, and then started to have a small seizure and threw up.

I took him back in to the vet and they said that it probably was from all the stress from this morning and the pain medication. He seems to be resting better this afternoon.

It's interesting how close they are with one another. I was working in the office and heard Choco barking up a storm in his room. When I took him out of the cage he jumped right down my shirt and into my bra and started giving Sam chest and belly rubs with his cute little head, then just curled up and went to sleep.

Awww...if they can stay together it's fine...Choco MAY try and help Sam get the collar off if left alone...but his presence should help lessen the stress for as long as he can have it. Poor guy! frown hug2

Thanks Jen, I'm keeping a "super" close watch so that he doesn't try to. Tonight I plan on keeping Sam in the travel cage when I go to bed. I'm sure Choco isn't going to be to happy about that...

Linda! I'm sorry I missed this until now. Poor Sam. frown I am so glad that you spoil your babies so much and know them so well. As you said, that may have saved Sam from a more serious problem (not that a UTI isn't serious enough, but you know what I mean). I sure hope he will be back to good health and back to his normal self in no time. Sending lots of hug2 hug2 and prayers to you, Sam and Choco. Be sure and give those boys some extra kisses and scritches from me, too.

Omgosh Linda! I'm so glad Sam and Choco have you to care and watch over them. I will never tease you again about how spoiled those two are (ok, well, maybe a little).

Fantastic job on your quick actions to help minimize the damage.

If you need ANYTHING or just someone to talk to in the middle of the night (they tend to be really long when you have a glider in an ecollar), call me anytime.

Kiss the boys for me and give yourself a big huge hug too!

Sam had a pretty rough night last night. Somehow he managed to get his ecolar off and started attacking himself again.
Thankfully we were able to get the ecolar back on. I contacted my vet to get more pain meds to help him thru the night.
I took him back in this morning to have an ultrasound done, rechecked his urine, and his anal glands. His bladder was larger than normal, and there were crystals in his urine and he tested again for a UTI. His anal glands were normal.
The vet sub-q'd him and started him on Batryl, Torb, and Metacam (if needed).
He seems to be resting now, so mom's gonna do the same.
Thank You Jen for all your help. hug2

Thank you Jen, he did manage to make a pin point hole at the base of his cloaca, hopefully since it's so small he will heal from that pretty quick.
Otherwise, just pray that the meds kick in quicker so that he will start to get some relief. hug2

Since he's in the collar, dab a little neosporin with the pain relief on also. I want to add, that with the Baytril, before you do that, take a tiny drop of the antibiotic ON your finger and dab it on the hole-it will work as a topical, too (most don't know that, and it's NOT a first line defense, but can be used that way in combination with the oral). hug2
