I just got an email from a mom in CO that just got her little guy neutered. He is still at the vet until 5 pm, but they told her that they had to use glue to close the incision. She is scared to death that he will pick at it tonight. My vet has never used glue, so I can not be of much help except support on the phone. I told her to come on here and also sent her the instructions to make an E-Collar, how to wrap him like a burrito if she can't get one on him, and to get back to the vet ASAP if he tears the incision open.
Is there anything else she should know or look out for?
Thanks

Tell her that she should make sure that he doesn't come home without pain medication and antibiotics. Also, that she should keep a very close eye on him and to keep him in a smaller cage tonight without a wheel or toys that will cause stress. Otherwise you gave her great advice.

my vet had a tech close after nuetering on one boy - i had to take him back the next day to reclose cus the tech used to much glue - vet used glue and sutures again but much cleaner - no issues after that.

Thanks, yes I did tell her to make sure he had post surg pain meds. Forgot about the antibiodics. Emailing her about them now. hug2

myangelbear77, did he open the incision because of too much glue or did you just want it done right?

Des just called me and her little guy went after the incision as soon as he woke up. The vet's office put a small e-collar on him and told her to take it off of him to feed him. She did and now can not get it back on. He instantly started tearing at the glue. She has him wrapped up and her boyfriend is holding him while she called me. I am no help since I have never been through this, and I have bought my e-collars already made. ( luckily I have never had to use one)

Also the vet gave her valium, but no pain meds or antibiodics. They gave her a phone number for an ER vet office if there were problems. She called and they will not treat a glider and told her to go get some doll clothes to put on him, so he can not get to his pom. tant tant

I remember someone using vet tape to make an e-collar before, if you know how or can help talk her through any of this, please PM me and I can give you her phone number. She took off work tomorrow to be able to stay up with him tonight, and home with him tomorrow.

I have to leave for about an hour in 15 minutes, but will check back as soon as I get home.

You can use a piece of the foam that is used to wrap pipes, make it about an inch and a half wide, and use vet tape to tape it closed. That is what my vet gives me and they work great. you need the 1/2" kind, I think.

I just really cannot believe some animal health care providers and their COMPLETE lack of common sense...

I mean...she calls an emergency vet, and they tell her to buy doll clothes?

Does anyone else find this absurd.

You've done a wonderful job, trying to help her...I'm sure she is very thankful SOMEONE can!

Just got off the phone with them.
They are on their way to pick up the stuff they need to keep him safe for the night. I will be talking with them again when they get back home. They are doing great with him, but really needed the encouragement.

Another combination that will work if the need a "plan B"...

There's a self-sticking medical tape at drug stores (cannot remember what it's called) that sticks to itself but won't stick to fur or skin. I used that with clear breathe-able medical tape & just kept wrapping layer on top of layer until my SMing stinker couldn't get to himself & cause any more damage.

Many vet's offices have a vet wrap called Nich Bandage. It's a stretchable gauze-like mesh that is much more comfortable on a suggie than an E-collar. Using that & a healthy later of breathe-able tape will work well, too.

Just a quick update:
All are doing well. The little one is sleeping and mom is no longer crying or stressed out. I think that they will make it ok.

Minkasmom - I did give them the instructions for both the niche collar and the tape. I had to use these with Jackie Chan when he was SMing since he can't hold an ecollar up.

T - You are right. We are all so lucky to have the internet and forums at our fingertips! Look how quickly we were able to offer help here!

was he going after it to hurt himself or is he just cleaning himself. I've had all my boys neutered and my dr always only used glue and we never had any problems. Now my boys would start cleaning themselves when they first woke up- afterall there is something in their fur and cleaning is what they do best.

I hope he wasn't stressed out to much if he was really just trying to clean himself.

Our vets in our area use the glue to on all animals big and small say it helps with a quicker healing process and weve never had a problem with it .Hope all works out for the little one.

I asked that too when she first called, but she said he was tearing at the glue and his incision, so better safe than sorry. My loss last weekend opened my eyes to how fast these guys can do fatal damage. frown

be VERY careful when usinh the vet wrap!!!!!!! This stuff stretches VERY tight from the roll and can EASILY cut off circulation. You have to unroll it from thje roll, loosely roll it back on and then wrap the part of the glider. Do NOT pull this stuff tight, otherwise its great!

Levent removed the suture after his neuter, so after that they used glue to close it. He didn't SM, just keep removing whatever was there. In my experience, keep the ecollar on as long as possible. Levent wore his for a little less than a week and was fine when it came off (he also could eat, drink, and get around good with the ecollar on).

Des emailed me this morning, Val and I had been calling, but her phone was dead.

Stitch is doing fine. She fell asleep and when she woke up he had gotten the tape / e-collar off and had taken all the glue off. shock But the incision is still closed and now he is only licking not chewing so she thinks he will be fine. She is still watching closely and giving the valium like instructed by the vet office. But YEAH he is OK. party

Thank you all for everything. Merry Christmas!
