I went back and read through my HPW Making Adventure to see why my calculation did not match how long the mix was actually lasting. I found my math error (told you I hated and was bad at math! tounge ) and I have corrected it. I wanted to start a new post with the information so that it didn't confuse people. Trial and error is the only way to learn.. the following information should be correct.

The recipe calls for:

2 cups warm water
1.5 cups honey
3 eggs
1/4 cup HPW powder
2 tablespoons bee pollen

And if you have breeding or nursing females it says to increase the HPW powder amount to a 1/2 cup. I made the original recipe so I do not know how much a batch made for the breeding formula lasts..

How to mix HPW:

Cook Eggs, set aside.

In large bowl mix water and honey. Stir until honey is dissolved and then add in HPW powder, mix well.

In blender add in the eggs, bee pollen and 1/2 to 1 cup HPW liquid. Blend for 2 minutes. Add in additional liquid and blend for another 2 minutes.

Pour into a freezer safe bowl with an airtight lid. Keep in the freezer. HPW will freeze to the consistancy of ice cream.

Feeding instructions:

1.5 teaspoons of HPW per glider
1 TABLEspoon of mixed fruits
1 TABLEspoon of mixed veggies
Mealworms may be fed as treats

First I'll share my purchases:

One 250g box of HPW -- $18
Two 5 lb. jugs of honey -- $20
1 lb. of bee pollen -- $15
36 eggs -- $6
--------------------------------
total: $59

I only made 5 batches, but measured everything out so that I could breakdown what I needed and what the cost ends up being.

Some tips/info:

~~~> A 5 lb. jug of honey comes out to a total of 7 cups, leaving you a 1/2 cup short for the 5th batch. (luckily I had some leftover honey from BML).
~~~> A 250g box of HPW makes about 11.5 batches..

~~~> 1 lb. of bee pollen makes a total of 22.5 batches, so you can make two whole 250g boxes of HPW with a pound of bee pollen..
~~~> 1 batch of HPW is just short of being 5 cups.. 5 cups of mix makes 240 teaspoons, or 160 servings of HPW.

~~~> One 250g box of HPW will make approximately 2,760 teaspoons, or 1,840 servings of HPW. (there are 16 tablespoons in 1 cup and 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon.. so that means that there are 48 teaspoons in a cup.. 48 x 5 = 240... 5 cups x 11.5 batches = 57.5 cups... 57.5 cups x 48 teaspoons = 2,760 teaspoons.. 1.5 teaspoons = 1,840 servings of HPW.
So if you break it down, 1 batch of HPW costs approximately $5.13 to make..
The HPW recipe actually states to feed each glider 1.5 teaspoons, not 1... so you can give a pair of gliders 1 TABLEspoon of HPW and be feeding them correctly. thumb
If you have: (**approximate estimates**)
2 gliders... a 250g box of HPW should last you 920 nights.
5 gliders... a 250g box of HPW should last you 368 nights.
10 gliders... a 250g box of HPW should last you 184 nights.
15 gliders... a 250g box of HPW should last you 122.6 nights.
20 gliders... a 250g box of HPW should last you 92 nights.
25 gliders... a 250g box of HPW should last you 73.6 nights.
...and so on. To figure it out, divide 1,840 by the number of gliders that you have.
**Do not try and make more than 1 batch at a time unless you have a large blender.. my blender has lines that go up to 5 cups, but it probably holds 7-8 cups.. when it is blending, the whole thing is FULL... If I had tried to double a batch I would have been OUT of luck!!**
Another thing that I noticed is that HPW melts EXTREMELY fast!!
If you find any mistakes please feel free to correct me.
Wow ... Very nice!!! thumb
I think Im going to have to remake my last batch ... it seems to have gotten too cold in the freezer ~ its a pain to scoop out! My last batch didnt do that but then again I was storing it in a freezer safe large zip lock baggie.
Question for the gurus. It looks like I'll be making my first batch of HPW tomorrow, and I have a question. One of the writeups says to boil the egss, another one says to scramble them. Can you tell me how the eggs should be prepared?
Fair enough, but that brings me to another question. What do you scramble them in? Do you use any kind of oil? Cooking spray? Nothing?
I microwave mine for 35 seconds. You can add a tiny bit of water in a pan for liquid to scramble them. Using oil or cooking spray is not suggested.
I always scramble my eggs as well. In the nukalator (microwave)and I add a tad bit of milk to mine to make them fluffier!! wink
I was wondering about the water situation...ive always used filtered water for my gliders and the recipe says warm water...it should be ok to just measure out 2 cups of water and the microwave it right?
Linda, who created the HPW diet? (sorry, I know I should know this, grr) If it is you, I apologize again!
Jen, microwaving the water should be fine.
Sugarblossoms, The HPW (powder)was created in Australia.
The diet itself came from me after Pockets (Debbie) told me about the PML and I knew I was not going to be able to obtain all the different items she offers with hers. She grows quite a bit of stuff from Australia, plus some of the items she gets comes from Australia and are expensive. I took the HPW into the vet to discuss it. After looking it over for a week, he suggested to add some bee pollen to it and that is how it came about. thumb
However, they have been using the HPW powder for decades in Australia to feed to gliders and Pockets had been using it for a very very long time prior to telling me about it as well.
Peggy, I know thaaat. LOL roflmao
I have always used Debbie's PML and the Wombaroo and was just wondering how this HPW diet came about.
When I feed the PML, I have always given 1 "icecube" for 2 gliders which is app. 1 TBS. Is it correct with your diet to feed them app. 1 1/2 TSP.? I just want to make sure as I am getting ready to make it now. hug2
I'm making this batch with boiled eggs as I already boiled them. Is that okay?
Does the recipe need to be mixed in that exact order or how I've normally done it like with the PML?
Well I got it all made. smile Just want to verify the 1 1/2 Tsp. Each icecube is 6 Tsp or 2 TBS. That would help on the price of Wombaroo for sure. I also buy the Australian Bee Pollen from Stacitch (sp?).
1 1/2 tsp per glider is correct. It's 1 tbs per 2 gliders. It usually works out easiest if you just scoop it out of the bowl. Sometimes it doesn't freeze hard enough in the ice cube trays and can be hard to get out. They even sell a little cookie scooper at wal-mart that is 1 tbs, works perfect!
Thanks Lynsie! Ugh, guess I'll have to wait till next time to make it up in bowls. I made a ton of ice trays this time. I turned the freezer up so maybe that will help some! LOL
