All the stuff about oxalates in veggies got my thinking.

I did a bit of research and discovered some interesting stuff!

I learned that you can neutralize the oxalic acids in veggies by cooking them!

http://www.wisegeek.com/which-foods-are-good-sources-of-calcium.htm

This next source says to cook them as fast as possible and with the least amount of water possible, so I'm guessing steaming would probably be a good method, rather then boiling.

http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/5000/5557.html

Lastly, here is a list some of the fruits/veggies that are high in calcium. It lists the Calcium Content, Fractional Absorption, and Estimated absorbable Calcium/serving.

http://home.bluegrass.net/~jclark/calcium_foods.htm

Of course, one must take into consideration that it is very likey that a sugar glider's body is WAY different then ours and that they may very well be able to absorb calcium, despite oxalic acids. After all, in the wild the DO eat eucalyptus, which is high in calcium and oxalates. :\

Anyways, if tehre's anyone else out there like me who has nothing better to do then sit around on the comp doing research, then enjoy using your brain! grin

For everyone else who has no idea what this stuff is about( worried)...don't worry, you'll inderstand soon enough. wink Research, research, research! That's how you learn! dance

No one wants to talk about calcium absorbtion and oxalic acid with me? Lol.

It backed up something I read a while ago. I read that the vitamins in most "yellow" (ie orange) vegetables are only released for absorption when the veggie is slightly cooked. Whenever I feed my parrot sweet potato or carrots, I lightly steam them in the microwave. I started doing the same thing for the gliders, but when I posted that on GC a while ago, the whole thing was shot down. So - thanks for posting. There really are some vegetables that are better served cooked than raw. People get caught in the "raw is better" thought - and don't realize it isn't always.

I don't feed the gliders white potatoes, but I do feed them to the parrots from time to time. Lightly microwaving them helps convert the starch into digestible sugar. So ... that's good, too.

And parrots have high Vit A requirements - which is why the sweet potatoes and carrots.

Really? It changes startch to digestible sugar? That is so cool! I'll have to do some research on it. wink

I've never fed my gliders potatoes either, I never really thought about it, lol.

HAH...I had white potatoes the other night...offered a few bits to my babies and it was like chirp mania...they were IN LOVE and wanted more...too bad I was all done at that point...lol.

My gliders do not like raw veggies...they will not eat raw stuff. Some good stuff on there that I feed though that has calicium in it...always nice to know!

I can't wait til summer and more goodies are in season and in the store.

How did you cook the potatoes(steamed in the oven, boiled, mashed, etc...)?

Guerita.. i'm glad you posted this! I remember mentioning Spinach as a great source of calcium but then people shot it down because it was calcium oxalate..

From the little bit of online research i did that day, i figured that oxalates actualyl CAN be broken down and absorbed by sugar gliders because of the high acidic content in their stomach.> The high acidic content in MOST animals stomachs are used for killing bacteria like salmonella (why most animals CAN eat raw meat and eggs without getting sick) AND for breaking down complex minerals into usable substances..

In humans, oxalates are just eventaully turned in to kidney stones or urine crystals.. But humans have some of the lowest acidic stomach content than all of the mammals.. Thats why we can not assume because its bad for humans, that its bad for sugar gliders.

When i started, i thought raw eggs were really dangerous for sugar gliders and even cats, but after doing lots and lots of research, i learned that isnt the case.. and just a few weeks ago i got an issue of cat fancy that backed up that fact...

So, would steaming frozen corn (Petey's favorite thing in the world) make it a little healthier for them????

I don't know, Mary - but I don't think so. I think the nutrients in corn are more easily broken down. I think it is more "tough" veggies that benefit from steaming. I don't really steam them "cooked" - I just steam them a bit in the microwave. They are still mostly raw- but just broken down a bit.

Worth a shot! lol Petey will take corn over ANYTHING!!! I know it isn't great for him and I try to make sure I balance things out, but if he had his way, he would live on corn and an occasional mealie!!! lol

I assumed as much, since gliders in the wild eat Eucalyptus, but I had nothing to back it up, so, instead, I tried to find a way to get the calcium from the veggies. wink Thanks for the info! I don't intend on steaming my veggies, but I simply thought it was really great info. For those that are doubters, tey can now steam the veggies their gliders love so much and rest assured that they're getting all the goodies from them. smile

Pappy, I wouldn't recommend steaming the corn. Cooking can destroy vitamins if the veggies is cooked too much. Since corn kernels are so small they'd probbly cook REALLY fast and you'd end up destroying what little bit of nutrience they DO have. :\
