Gemini--Make sure you have some fresh water for your glider so it does not get dehydrated. What volume and how frequent is your glider vomiting? Did your glider vomit right after eating something or was it later? Do you have any pedialyte handy--just in case you need to get to a vet if the vomiting does not subside soon?

While you are answering these questions--I am going to be here with you so you are not alone. I will try to do as much as I can from here. Do you need to talk to me directly? Just click on my e-mail icon and send me your number. I will give you a call if that will help.

Check these links, e-mail me your number, and I will walk you through the rest of the way.

she vomited a couple times in a row, she stopped now, but I can tell she is not feeling good. She is not using her wheel, just sits in it.

I've called the vet in charlotte, but he is on vacation over the holidays.

I don't have any pedialiyte. That's about the only thing I dont have here right now. ahhh, figure.

raleigh is a long ways,so as new bern(I think over 6 or 7 hours)

i found this link:
http://www.isga.org/vetlist.htm#SC

this vet is about 4 hours, but I am not sure if she accepts emergencies at this hour.

Gemini--Craig and I are going to team up and help you on this. E-mail me your telephone number and Craig is going to remain at his computer checking out some information for you. I can talk to you on the phone while Craig does some research on your behalf and I can talk to you on the phone to get more information. Craig and I are IM'ing each other now. We think we have a couple of solutions or stop gap measures for you. We are not vets, but at this hour of the morning would you consider two Moderators in place of the vets? LOL

We just want you to know you are not alone and will do everything we can to help with our limited veternary knowledge.

Surfside is basically Myrtle Beach, you could get there in a couple of hours if you can contact the vet. Good Luck!

Well, there goes that. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

The main issue, until you get to the vet is to make sure that she remains hydrated. Try to get a sample of the liquid that she vomitted up so the vet can test it.
Some of the possible causes could be an alergy to food, giardia, or some stomache virus, intestinal blockage, or UTI. It may have been a reaction to "bad" food/bugs also. I'm still reading, will post more when I find it.

I talked to pepPony and I am feeding here joghurt, and giving her water. No vet is available right now. I am tempted to drive all the way to clarksville, tn, but I can't reach bourbon either. where is everybody? (well besides you great people here)

I really really appriciate this soooo much.

Gemini,

You are doing the best you can for her right now by keeping her hydrated. The vet in newbern is a good one, but also a long drive. I could try them if you would like. I will be on until 6 or 7 am if you need any help, what little I can offer.

I saw the new bern, but all the emergency vets are not glider experienced...at least it seams like it. Why did this have to happen on a holiday weekend? ahhhh. I am still searching too.

I think new bern is about 7 hours or so (yahoo map can't even find it, so I am guessing by looking at a regular map)

The clarksville, tn office is closed until monday. this really bad.
I pretty much checked all surounding states. No vet at all in georgia.

I'm about an hour from Newbern and can get to Charleston in 5 hours, but I'm not sure how that relates to Columbia. Columbia is 2 hours from there but in a different direction (down I-26). She is highly reccomended as a vet if we can get ahold of her.

Update: The glider took the water so she is getting rehydrated. She also took the yogurt and it did not come back up. I went over with Gemini some of the reasons for vomitting and Craig was posting all of those exact same reasons at the same time--Good work Craig! Gemini has a number to the vet now. She has my home telephone number and she is going to post any updates or changes. Give her some time because she is trying to get her glider to a vet even though the glider's condition is now stabilized. Gemini's condition is also stabilized! LOL

Gemini--Any emergency vet, even if not one that specializes in gliders is OK for emergencies. Mein Deutsche ist nicht ausgezeichnet aber nur gut. Es tut mir leid! Bist du mude? Veileicht, ich bin mude. Haben Sie eine guten Abend oder Morgen? LOL Auf Weidersehen!

Gemini--Any vet in an emergency is better than no vet at all.

I'll drive, that's not a problem, but I don't think we can get a hold of anyone right now, not over the holidays. I called pretty much everybody but new bern.
If you make it in 5 hours to charlston then I should be able to make it too (going I 20 and I95 , then taking hwy 70 to new bern)

Gemini-I just tried to reach the glider-knowledgeable vet in Florida that did a good job treating Petunia while I was there. Unfortunately, their 800 number was answered by their answering service and there's noone on call right now. Sh-t. They may have someone in the office tomorrow and it would be better if someone else called them next since my last words to the answering service lady were "thanks for nothing". It's Marathon Veterinary Hospital and we saw Dr. Doug Mader. I'm pretty sure that their other docs also have experience with gliders, but Mader takes care of 4 gliders at a small zoo on Stock Island. Their phone numbers are 800-832-7694 and 305-743-7099. I'm pretty sure they give priority to established clients, so feel free to use my name (Alice Senturia) on the off chance that it'll help. I wish I could help more. Hang in there.

I can't thank you guys enough. You don't know how much better you make me feel.

Babi is still not looking like she is doing better, but she is not throwing up (unless I've missed it while on the computer - she is in her cage right now)

You could also try a nearby vet and have that vet do a phone consult with a glider knowledgeable vet. Craig will be monitoring this post for the rest of the morning. Try calling Bourbon again if you can not get ANY vets in the next hour. She may be able to help and know of a vet that is closer. I know you tried once before but she was probably in deep REM sleep.

Is the yogurt and water staying down still? How is your glider acting? Any lethargy?

ohh, she is out of her wheel and climbing. I guess that's good news. Still, I read a post after I searched for "throwing up and vomiting" and found one message saying that her glider died the day after it vomited.

That really gets me.... I wish I could find a vet tonight

I just spoke to a local vet who has seen gliders but doesn't consider herself very knowledgeable. I read her all the info I had and she suggested that you not push oral fluids until your glider hasn't vomitted for 2 hours. When I inquired about a subcutaneous shot to rehydrate the glider, she agreed that that would be good and you wouldn't have to wait or see a glider-knowledgeable vet for that. Hope this helps alittle. alice

That vet is at an emergency clinic in St. Louis-the phone number is 314-739-1500.
I just tried 2 other emergency clinics and neither one had anyone there who knows about gliders. Sh-t.

answer machine on bourbon's line.
Alice, not to affend the vet, but I really would like to have a vet that knows at least a tinny bit about gliders. I am not sure if it's a good idea not to give her any liquid. they dehydrate to easily, I think water is probably neccessary at this point.

Thanks anyway. I know you are trying to help too.

ahh, I just checked yahoo, st louis, is 16 hours away. Now that is too far <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> by the time I make it there It's sunday evening, then I could've waited until monday. Don't forget guys, I did not sleep yet, and I don't know how far I am able to drive. (don't want to fall asleep on the wheel now)

pepPony forgot to tell you. yes, the water and joghurt is staying down so far. (unless I've missed it while on the puter), she seams to do better right now, but i am still worried. I heard so much about gliders doing fine the day before they got really sick, so sick that it was too late.

Gemini,

We may be left with finding a local vet who can do consultaions with a knowledgable vet. A long drive at this stage would not benefit either of you. Is there any emergency vet in your area? We can get the numbers for Glider knowledgable vets.

Craig, there is no emergency vet for exotic pets. all they do here is cats and dogs. the only exotic vet is not back until monday.

I'll call him again to check this answer machine.

did you find out about the new bern vet? I could get a couple of hours of sleep on the coutch and then leave.

Well the newbern vet couldn't help. They said the Glider vet was off for the next few days and the vet on call had no idea about sugar gliders. Sorry, I'll try and think of something else. If she is having trouble with going to the bathroom, it could very well be a UTI or impaction issue. Hopefully some more experience will wake up soon.

Gemini,

Let me know if there is anything i can do hun...i will be in Columbia later this evening if you need anything. I'm hoping you found someone to see your little one since your no longer posting for a couple of hours now...
If you do head to New Bern and need a pit stop on the way back you can always stop in Fayetteville and crash here for awhile with my wild kingdom...i have spare cage and all for the glider. Hope to hear an update soon!!!

i am up <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> still trying to find a vet. (that's to everyone that called and posted to this board)
babi seams to be moving around, but she is awful crabby, I am awful crabby.

I don't think she peed jet, so I am hitting the phone one more time.

Thanks ya'll

udate: okay, teeth brushed, hair combed, dressed and ready to go. i think I am on my way to Huntsville. one clinic up there is calling me back in a minute.

so if you don't hear from me, that's where I'm heading....

oh, also: i just got her out of the pouch without crabbing. she drinking the gliderade.

today is looking better ,huh? now that vet just needs to call back.

a reminder: this is going to cost. $175 without the treatment, so if someone considers to buy a glider, make sure you can afford the vet. I never thought mine would get sick either.

Gemini-I hope that you're not posting because you're on the way to a vet appt. You are in my thoughts and my prayers.
For the record, I never thought that you would drive to St. Louis. I just thought that I phone conversation would be better than nothing.
Please let us know how things progress today. alice

Hi, I just came back from the vet. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
Babi is fine. Dr. Powers checked pretty much everything but x-rays (because her joeys). NO UTI, no other parasit. Dr. Powers thinks that she may have been constipated, and that probably was the reason why she vomited too.

Puhh, I feel much better now.
so what did I learn one day and $300 after?? Well, I found a great vet that is actually only 1 1/2 hours away from me. She saw many gliders before, knows bourbon and knows this board.
I know my glider is just fine and I can get some sleep tonight. Sleeping on the coutch is really not my thing.

Kind a hurt my feelings this morning when babi and bubba crabt at me for the first time in ages. Boy, did I feel great after babi crabt at dr. Powers.

also: Dr. Powers said that she was very impressed with me knowing so much about gliders. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" /> Well, you all know who I have to thank you for that. I guess I never realized that I did learn alot during my visits to this board.

I want to thank everbody one more time. (I feel like I received an oscar, now I have to speak the big speach and say the thank-yous)

I thank Peppony for calling me to support me. I want to thank him for trying to find a vet for me.

I want to thank beetlejuice for calling vets for me, searching for vets and all the good stuff. I appriciate it so much.

I want to thank Ellen for calling me, supporting me, and giving me Virginias PHone number.

I want to thank Virginia. Without the emergency phone number I probably would have not found a vet today. At leat not a exotic vet. A regular vet probably would've done something that's not neccessary.

I want to thank alice33 for trying to find a vet, calling various vets and posting on this board. Thanks lots <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I want to thank everybody else for their support, and prayers. I am sure this helped alot.

Okay...so now where is my oscar???

Gemini,

I am so relieved to hear that Babi is alright. You deserve more than an Oscar for last night LOL. I'm glad you were also able to find a vet that is so close. I may need to get that number from you after finding that the vet in Newbern wasn't available. My local vet is more than willing to learn, but realistically has no experience. He did have the latest Glider book published though <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" /> . Take care and get some rest. I know the quality of sleep derived from sleeping on couches is not the best LOL.

Oh I am so glad she is fine. I have waited all day to hear the news. Don't worry about the crabbing. If you felt that bad you would crab too (in German).

Glider love from us to you

And I want to thank YOU for doing what's best for your glider, even though it cost a lot of time, travel and money. Thanks for the example you set for others in a similar situation.

Since she isn't in our list of vets, I'm hoping you'll take a moment to add her, Gemini, along with your good comments. Just go to the bottom of the page and click on vets.

thanks!

Gemini--Nominations for Oscar in the real life stories of "Trying to Get an Emergency vet in the Early Morning Hours". And the winner is...GEMINI

I am glad that everything turned out all right for you and your glider. I hope my German was not too bad on the phone--I have not spoken in years. Now I know what you meant about your English when I tried typing in German! LOL

Deine Welcome! Gesundheit Babi! Nur Ausgezeichnet!!! Bis heute Morgen! Auf Weidersehen!

sugerglidergrl121680 so she was talking about you guys. She is a really great vet, and I am very glad I found her.

PepPony: LOL you are doing great.

Here the translation:
Gleichfals.Haben Sie einen Guten Tag und eine Gute Nacht! Schlaft in himmlischer Ruhe.
"Ich sagt sieben X" (Huhh????)
Unsere Vater im Himmel, geheiligt werde Dein Name, Dein Reich komme...."von dem Bosen" - huh???, Amen.

Fuer Dich und Babi.Babi liegt mir jetzt im Herzen. Und Du auch Gemini.

bla bla bla.... I can't translate the rest.... i am in between right now. my english is bad, and my german is getting worth too. Actually if I really try my english grammar is not too bad, it's just that sometimes (most of the time) I write before I think.... LOL

I am so glad everything turned out all right. Are things back to normal yet with Babi?

Gemini--LOL Ruhe was a typographical error from not getting any sleep and typing to fast. I do the same with English words.
sieben X = sieben times = seven times

All my foreign language skills are suffering too. It is hard to remember some words when you only use them once a year and have not spoken them in 17 (like Weinachtsfest). I got rid of the ex-wife, so there is no one to practice with. Thank goodness! LOL We will help each other! LOL Can you help me with my Italian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Polish, and Portuguese too?

I Hope you are not saying all German Women are bad? LOL. Moody maybe, but not bad.

Your Geman is great. I can't belive you spelt Weihnachtsfest correctly. Giving you the thumbs up!

sorry, but I can't help you with the other languages....gosh PepPony...I can't belive you speak ,how many, Languages?

BTW: change of subject real quick...saw your site. One day, when you meet adrian paul, let me know and send me an invitation. LOL (Psst! don't tell anyone I wrote that)

Babi is fine, a little crabby, but fine. Well, they both could eat a little more, but I think they are still upset with me. That's okay. I will give them the love they need.

Sure glad I found a great vet. So, something good came out of the whol dilemma.
