Today after Daddy went in to his cage, after we were playing with him, he started to twitch. When he stopped twitching he did not really move much. Then he started twitching again. So we started calling vets to see if anyone could get him in right away. By the time we got a hold of one he started foaming at the mouth. We went to the vet, by the time we got there he stopped foaming at the mouth and calmed a little. There was not much they vet could do for him. She said he may have low glucose or calcium, so she gave him some of both. She also gave him something to stop the seizing. But she said other then that there is really nothing she could do for him.

Has anyone had this problem or a problem like this with twitching or seizing?
If so, what did you do to make him/her health again?

He needs to get better soon. He has two baby boys to help Mama take care of.

I'm really scared that he might die.

Please if anyone has any info or can help please let me know.

Danielle,
I'm sorry you haven't gotten any responses yet. Hopefully someone who has experience with seizures will be along soon. I hope your glider is feeling much better today and that he doesn't have recurrent problems with the seizures hug2

First thing you need to do is find the cause. Is there any possibility that he has gotten into some toxins of some sort? Eaten some bad fruit/veggies, anything you can think of, you need to bring to the attention of the vet. Do you feed pellets or crickets?

you said you had him out for playtime, I would start there, something there may have been toxic.

Seizures are really broad spectrum, they can be caused from toxins, head injuries, bacterial infections, as well as other things, if your glider showed signs unexpectedly, then that would be as I said above,
I wouldn't think it would be diet unless your diet is really off base. but then I see that you are fairly new here to the online glider community, so maybe you can let us know what exactly you do feed, so we can either eliminate that as a cause or direct you to get them on a good diet

I have 9 gliders and 2 (2 weeks old) joeys. They all eat the same food and everyone else is doing great. They are on the BML diet. I don't feed crickets and their dry food is Happy Glider Food. It is not a new batch, I have been giving it to them for 2 months.

When we had him out he did not leave my fiance. Daddy climb up and down his back and arms, he never touched the ground.

I think that maybe he has not been eating like he should be, because of Mama and the joeys. I think that maybe Mama is staying out to long and not giving Daddy time for eat.

If he did not eat for two days, could that cause the seizures?

We are now giving him antibiotics and syringe feeding him.
We are going to start feeding him "Leadbeater's mix". Is that a good thing to feed him?

the BML is a modification of the "leadbeaters mix"

you already have him on antibiotics so a bacterial test would be in-conclusive

he does eat just not when you see him.

There has just been more food left in the bowl then normal. Normally they eat it all.

The diet the vet give me to try is the "Leadbeater's Mix"
450 ml water
450 ml honey
3 shelled, boiled eggs
75 grams high protein baby cereal
3 tsp vitamin/mineral supplement

Is that good to feed him?

Here is the link to BML. It sounds like you are missing some things.

The BML you are feeding is a modified version of this diet. The High Protein Baby Cereal is no longer available in the US so the diet your vet gave you couldn't actually be made exactly as written.

Did you give your vet the recipe for the BML so they could look it over? (I don't believe most vets probably know that the High Protein Baby Cereal isn't available any longer.)

Daddy died today (5/23/08) around 4:15pm. He was at the vets and he stopped breathing on his own. A hour later his heart gave out. He fought so hard. He now rests under the apple tree in our backyard.

Now we are just worried about Mama and the babies. Hopefully she don't get depressed.

I am SO very sorry. Check your diet and just keep an eye out on Mama. She will miss him and she will need alot of your attention.

Again I feel so badly and my heart is with you and Mama.

We are give her a lot of attention. We just had her out. We let her play a little then gave her some food on a spoon. She eat a good amount and then wanted her babies. So we will do this again tonight a few times.

Hopefully everything goes great. We are going to take the rest of the bunch to the vet, to make sure they are ok and the vet is going to take blood from a couple of them to make sure no one is sick.

Oh I am so sorry to hear about daddy frown You did what you could and he knew you guys loved him.

I would make a new batch of bml. Like everyone said above the leadbeaters mix doesn't look like it has enough for your suggies dietary needs. If not bml, try hpw. That is also a good diet.

I would chuck the Happy Glider Food. I've never heard of it tho...is it a pellet food? If so, maybe you can switch to the Zookeeper's diet. Those pellets are much better and are semi-soft. Then you just add fruits, veggies, mealies, etc. You can find it at Suncoast and I think they have the diet program laid out for you too. But, if you do use bml...don't use the zookeepers (unless as a treat, that's what I do for tent time sometimes). If you use the zookeepers, don't use bml. BML is pretty specific on what you can feed with it.

Just give momma a lot of attention and treats smile Her joeys are oop already? Then at least she does have some other suggies to keep her company.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

hug2 I am so sorry for the loss of your little one. Mommy and the babies should be alright as long as you make sure that she gets plenty of breaks for rest and eating.
It's going to be hard on her, so please keep a close eye on her to make sure that she doesn't get depressed.
Sending you lots of hugs and prayers.

Moving this to Rainbow Memorials.

I am so very sorry on your loss. Is your vet an exotic vet? Taking blood from a glider is very tricky and should only be done in extreme situations.

I agree about making a new batch of food.

Hoping mom and her joeys will be ok.

They are on BML, the diet I was talking about before is the one the other vet wanted me to use. The vet that I went to today is an exotic vet. Mama's joeys are oop, they are 2 weeks old. We are giving Mama lots of extra attention. Right now she is resting.
Thank you all
