Okay, I just gotta ask...when you have successfully gotten to the point of getting your sweet babies to sleep in your bra quietly, peacefully...what the heck do you do with the flipping seatbelt?

My little ones sleep in a band of fleece attached to my bra that creates a long narrow pouch for them. Abi tends to stuff herself under my left breast and sleep on her back with her belly against the bottom curve. Aaron, on the other hand, curls into a ball in the center below my cleavage. Abi sleeps like a rock. Aaron is quite a bit more of a light sleeper. They go in "pouch" before I go to work and come out again when I come home. I carry a zipper pouch with me, just in case. And yes, they are offered water at least 2x a day.

So my question is: what can I do with my seatbelt to make it safer for them? I already have it running over the top of my right side and into my armpit, but that tends to rub against my neck during turns.

I wish I had a great idea to offer up, but i don't. I've tried thinking of everything and what I end up doing is just putting them somewhere else for the drive (ie: I have a "glider purse" I made that sits on the floor to have access to the cool/warm air coming out the vent). Then when I get where I'm going I just put them where they like to be . Hoping someone will come along and post a marvelous alternative, though!

I just adjust my seatbelt height so it goes more over to the side instead of where it is supposed to go.

I use to put it over my head to where just the bottom was all you could see until i got pulled over because the officer thought i didnt have my seatbelt on and wanted to know why i was wearing it like that. When i told him that i had a sugar glider in my bra he had no idea so i had to reach in a grab my little guy to show him to the officer. That was an exciting event. Lol

did he still give you the ticket?!

LOL the cop prly had a story about his weirdest pullover of the day! heheh! I pull my belt on the side too, but sometimes it slides, so yeah that does get annoying as well..ack

LOL That is what I do with my seatbelt too. Never gotten pulled over yet...knock on wood.

Something to think about; if you are driving or riding where there is an airbag in front of you, it might be wise to let them ride in a pouch in the back because they would be crushed if you were in an accident and the airbag deployed.

Don't airbags deploy upward at a slight angle? Cushion the face and upper chest? I thought the only thing I had to worry about with them riding against my lower ribs was the steering wheel...so I adjusted it up to miss them if I get thrown forward.

Please tell me if I assumed wrong because I don't want to loose my little ones in an accident due to a wrong assumption.

No, you are supposed to aim your airbag (center of your steering wheel) at your chest so that it doesn't impact you in the face and snap your neck back. I have a bra baby too and sometimes don't think to take a bonding pouch with me either, but it is something to think about.

Didn't even really think about that (though I do worry about the belt tightening and smushing them if I even have to make a minor stop). I will definently be keeping my babies out of my bra at all times when in the car from now on. Thanks!

Okie dokie then - zipper pouch while riding in the car, THEN transfer into the bra once I get to work. I can live with that. Better safe than sorry.

Always take a zipper pouch with me when I take one or both of them out anyway - they will sleep in my bra but man, oh man! when they are awake it is exploring time.

No he didnt give me a ticket although he was prepared too if couldnt pull a sugar glider out of my bra...lol. He was like "i wanna see a sugar something or other in less then a min. young lady" I bet he did have the story of the day...

I never thoguht about the air bag before looks like zipper pouch it will be in the car.

I truly believe the only reason my two gliders made it through my accident was because my airbag light was faulty so they didn't deploy. I had the gliders in a sissy.

Call me crazy, but I never take my gliders in a bonding pouch or under my shirt while driving. They always go into the safe travel cages belted up securely in the back seat. I get too easily distracted if a glider wakes up or moves around so I am taking a safer route, by using travel cages.

Deployment of airbags can be fatal to the gliders and I am not risking my gliders' lives.

Even better idea then no explaining to an officer and having to pull a glider out of your bra. I felt like i had just preformed a magic trick by the look on his face. But then again i'm sure he thought i was making the whole story up like most people prolly do to get out of a ticket.

I would not alter the way a seatbelt is supposed to go so that you can take your glider babies with you. If you were in an accident you could very well be doing more harm by having the seatbelt altered and not fully protecting you.

The concerns about the airbag and steering column are correct also. I bet your gliders want to have a safe owner and will deal with riding in a pouch until the destination rather than have them alter their safety devices in any way to accomodate them.

Another thing is that most people don't even know what a glider is, much less know how to take care of/handle your gliders should you get into an accident. The gliders might sense the shock/stress/trauma from the owner, and would just freak out, hence another reason to use a travel cage, so they are safe in it.

I have been in too many accidents (well, even one is too many!) and the last serious one - almost 5 years ago now - I was going 50mph when a car turned in front of me - no time to even let my foot off the gas, let alone hit the brake - I hit that car going a solid 50 mph - had the air bag deploy and the seat belt tighten and I was a sore, massively bruised mess afterwards - ribs, shoulder, chest, lap, hips, etc...(among other injuries)!! No way am I gonna risk my babies being squished in the middle of me and those safety devices that definitely saved my life if they did that much damage to huge, mega-padded (fat & overly endowed) me! Imagine what would happen to those little ones. Nuh-uh! I use a small travel cage that I buckle into the back seat. I am so paranoid about car crashes now - which is kind of a good thing - safety is very important for me and my loved ones - big or small!

I keep mine in a pouch on the seat next to me (or in my bag wedged on the floor) unless someone else can hold the pouch. I never wear them on me when driving, too dangerous. Had a wriggly one once decide it was playtime and got out in the car one night, not fun.

I have been in an accident (NOT my fault!) almost 7 years ago (right before I got gliders) and it was awful. The trauma from the accident lingered with me for quite a while. We were at the traffic lights, waiting for the lights to turn green. It turned green, and we proceeded. Some guy tried to make the lights before it turned red on him, and hit us on the passenger side of the vehicle. Come to find out that he did NOT have brakes nor did he have any auto insurance! I also got rear-ended by some lady talking on her cell phone. She rear-ended a car in front of her which in turn rear-ended me. It was a 3-car accident. Thinking back, I shudder to think what might have happened if I had gliders with me on my person, which is the reason I refuse to wear my gliders on my person while driving. You just never know and no, you are not invincible. Nobody is.

Jen, I was also rear ended (someone rear ended the people behind me @ about 60mph who then rear ended me) & I ended up in the ER later that night with bruised ribs and needing pain meds. Less than a week later, I was on my way from work to the mechanics to get the estimate on the rear damage when that lady pulled out to make a left turn right in front of me while I was going 50 and had the right of way - she had a stop sign. After that, I upgraded to an SUV for my sense of safety. I feel safer in a bigger vehicle. I have been in, I think 7 medium to major accidents and only one was my fault (I was 16 and merged into a merge sign - was looking over my shoulder to see if I could go and didn't realize I had turned the wheel! One time, I hit a deer going 60mph and another time a deer ran into me! The other's were other drivers' faults.) I have also been in quite a few minor accidents. I do not trust anyone driving anymore and keep the safety of me and my passengers (human or furred!) at the very top of my head always, now! I also don't trust those deer!

Usha77, I am glad you upgraded to a SUV! We have a SUV too, and it makes us feel safe. Yes, it is the same SUV that had taken quite a few hits from other cars.
