Can I call and get one without applying? Or is it something you have to apply for first? I don't really have enough breeding females to apply right now, but I will soon.

Suz, we either have the same inspector or the Ohio inspectors have the same 'theory'. I was told that if my female hasn't produced a joey in the last 365 days, it isn't counted as a breeding female...

Also just for FYI the females can be spayed. My vet has done it. But our USDA inspector told us they all count, I guess it just depends on who does the inspection. But as long as you are in the process thats ok. Just get it done asap. good luck its not that big of a deal really.

That is really odd Suz, I always was told even if you a female that are not with males, they count. Do you call the office in NC? or the other one? I am wondering if it is different info from the same office or not... that's what I was told when I called as well Krys Suz, we either have the same inspector or the Ohio inspectors have the same 'theory'. I was told that if my female hasn't produced a joey in the last 365 days, it isn't counted as a breeding female... well then if that's how it works I wouldn't have to be licensed yet because 3 of my girls have never had joeys (2 aren't old enough, 1 we're beginning to question if the male is sterile). Also just for FYI the females can be spayed. My vet has done it. But our USDA inspector told us they all count, I guess it just depends on who does the inspection. But as long as you are in the process thats ok. Just get it done asap. good luck its not that big of a deal really. while they CAN be spayed, it's not usually done because it's a very risky procedure with a female glider's reproductive system. In an extreme emergency, I can see it being done, but any other time, no thank you..

You need to have 3 or more breeding females to qualify for a USDA Breeder's License. As already noted, you can call and request the packet at any time. Not in Kentucky. If you have 3 females of ANY kind of animal, they are considered "breeding females" even if you do not have a single male in your house. It's silly but it's the law.

It will depend on your USDA inspector, so best to call and contact your local inspector and ask. My inspector (when I was breeding/licensed) told me that ANY intact female of any USDA monitored breed counted if I was breeding something (it wasn't a problem, as all of my girls are spayed except the gliders and I only had 2 girls at the time). But he also said that different inspectors will or won't enforce it that way. When I asked him about the main offices giving out different answers, he said the same thing - you need to check with your inspector because everyone reads the rule differently, but the USDA would back up the inspector whichever way they went. That was just what I was told, so I would always ask to be on the safe side.

Who said you need a license? Do you have breeding pairs of gliders that you are selling the joeys? I have 7 but only one pair and am not selling any joeys of mine, so I do not need to be licensed at this point.

I am in Indiana. I called a year or so ago and was told that if you have 3 breeding females you need a license.

USDA states that if you have MORE than 3 breeding females AND you are selling the offspring then you must be licensed.
