While your locating a vet, make sure you keep him wrapped up or get him into an ecolar! Keep him warm by putting him in your shirt. I will see what I can find for you.

He needs to be seen ASAP from what the picture looks like there could be possible necrosis at the end of his tail. How long has this been like this? Do you know if he has been chewing on it or one of his cage mates? It's IMPORTANT right now to get him into an ecollar or wrapped up like a burrito so that he doesn't do any more damage to it. Texas Vets Not sure if these are withing your area.

I looks pretty bad. Until you find a vet make sure he doesn't make it worse by trying to groom himself or bother it. And make sure you separate him from the others to prevent more injury. Try to keep him warm and calm. Stress alone can make it worse. I hope you can find a vet soon. Good luck. My thoughts are with you. Keep us updated.

I would just appear at the emergency vet clinic; they can't turn you away. I think any vet could treat an open wound like that. There are instructions for an e-collar here: How to Make an E-Collar. The key is to make sure he doesn't attack his tail any further or try to groom it. My guess is he's in pain, and if he is, he will continue to self mutilate to try and remove the source of the pain. Perhaps the vet can give you something for the pain as well as wrapping it. One possibility I've heard folks do, and a vet can decide if it would work, is to dress and wrap the wound and cut a large straw to wrap around it so the tail can't bend (and he won't be able to reach the tip). The tip of the tail does look necrotic, and unless treated immediately (amputated by a vet), could lead to blood poisoning and death.
Please, just drive to the open vet's office and demand immediate service. You can always follow up with a glider-knowledgeable vet tomorrow morning, but it may be too late if you wait.
After the wound is properly treated, then you can work on making and putting on the e-collar.

Keep him on you, close to your body, if he is comfortable being with you. You must keep him warm and away from his tail. Maybe wrap him in fleece so he can't get to his tail. But he is in pain and needs treatment now.
Here's a google search of San Antonio emergency vets. I'm not sure who all you've called, but I'll start on that list and make calls for you.

OK; I called the first on the list. The lady answered and they have three locations. She said anyone there could look at that wound, and they do have a specialist but not on duty tonight. There is an $80 exam fee and they'll give an estimate from there:
i just talked to the one on blanco and she said they would see him.
guys i am falling apart. this is the hardest thing i am gonna have to do. someone please take him. i have no money save for $80. and they told me that is just for the exam. he needs treatment and antibotics. he needs to live i just want him to live. please someone. anyone. i am in the middle of moving to TN. i dont get paid till next week and he isnt going to make it till then. DANGIT why isnt there a payment plan for animals?!

Some vets will work with you. When you call, ask. There are also some plans that assist, but I don't have that info readily at hand. I think it's called Care Credit. I'm in Phoenix, so I can't be of much more help. Sorry.
I just spoke with the one you just spoke with (210-822-2873). They must think there's an epidemic on self-mutilating gliders. She said they take cards, checks, Care Credit, and of course, cash. Is this something you can put on a credit card? Or do you have Care Credit?
I don't know who all is in your area, but I believe we have members who might be your neighbors. Check out the Texas State Roll Call forum and see if anyone is online who can either help you put an e-collar on or offer additional assistance.

I had this problem, too recently - it seems like 24 hour vets who will see gliders are very hard to find in parts of Texas. Is there anything we can do about that?
I am praying for your little guy, and I hope he makes it through this okay.
Also, yeah, that does look like necrosis of the tail. Cessna had that back in 2003, and the vet then at the Summertree Animal clinic (whatever happened to her? She was GREAT) helped me with her. She lived to be twelve and a half years old, so believe me your little guy may very well pull through.
And ugh, I understand about not having enough money. My local vet worked with me, and the emergency vets did a little, but they are a lot worse about not working with people who are strapped.
Hang in there.

I have some ecollars I can mail you, I might be able to overnight them. I am in Dallas and it wouldn't take long for one to reach you. PM me for my phone number/email and I'll try and get it out to you tomorrow if you haven't gotten one by then. I'll do it for free. Just please keep an eye on him, and keep calm. Try and keep calm yourself, too...I remember panicking over Cessna, and believe me things like this are scary. Just try to breathe and remember these are hardcore little guys who can make it through a lot.

Sending big-time prayers and your way to both of you. That's easy enough, and I have an endless supply of both!
Once treated, he'll pull through and be right as rain in no time. After this storm passes, you can think about what might've led to this behavior and what you maybe can do about it.
Good luck!

It cost me around $300 to have the tip of a glider's tail amputated and she's doing fine six months later. Do you have an e-collar on to stop him from continuing to chew on his tail? Keep him separate from the other gliders too. Why don't you call to see if any vet offers a more reasonable price for this surgery? He has to have this treatment or he won't make it. Hopefully someone will be able to help you further. I'm so sorry to hear about Thor.

The entire tail does not need to be removed - just about an inch up from the swelling. Any vet can do this - it doesn't have to be a vet with glider experience. I went through this with my Darwin this past February. I know how terrifying it is, but try to relax... I've put in a call to try to get you some help...
Shawna had to leave the house for an emergency. But, she is in Austin. She has an extra cage. Her vet is open til 2 today. She WILL take your little one and get treatment today. Please call me at 806-274-9177 and I can give you some instructions and set ya up with Shawna. I am on the phone with her right now. She has to deal with some stuff, but will be free in a few hours.

I have a glider without a tail now - he didn't even get knocked out for it - too weak. BUT - he is fine now. I wish you were closer - the vet here only charged $100 plus meds for everything on the first visit.

If nothing else can be found for you Jess, if you are willing and able to drive him down here (about an hour and a half) we can meet and take him to Tristan. I will have them put it on my account and you can pay it off that way.
I agree! These are just one of the many reasons I love this place. And I know that this is very very late, but in case this happens to anyone else in the future, here are a few things that you can do. I am very strapped for money, but I have a baby on the way, and I have been planning for a few months on what I might do if something happened to him:
1) Call your banks 1-800 number. Most of them have credit cards available to account-holders. They DO NOT always make the offers public, but they are happy to help if you ask
2) See if you can find loaners in your area - I know that we have 3 here (most are called quik checks, or something; they're meant to hold you over until pay-day).
3) Check with friends and family - this doesn't work with everyone (we least of all xD), but even if you are not on good terms with close family, maybe distant family will help?
4) Start applying for credit cards now. But DO NOT USE THEM!!! Put them away, lock them in a drawer - the limits do not have to be very large at all!
5) THE BEST ONE FOR ME SO FAR! PAYPAL!!! They have a credit card available, the general limit is about $300 (you can request a larger limit) and it is not hard to get at all!! Best thing about it is that you DO NOT NEED THE CARD! You can send a payment to your vet over the computer, and most are willing to work with you (even emergency vets) <3
I worked with almost NO extra money for months while taking care of my hedgehog, and these tricks worked wonders for me <3 If you EVER need ANY help (and this goes for everyone) please feel free to email or call me:
Shawna is on her way home with this glider. He will get the help he needs to be back on the road to health and will return to his mommy in a week or so.

Thank you everyone. I just walked in the door. Aside from being exhasted and emotionally tired i am alright. after the very long night in the ER with Thor, consoling the rep. that he bit real bad (she stuck her hand in the pouch, and my little man likes his personal bubble), and then fighting with him all morning into the afternoon trying to keep him from his tail. long morning to say the least.
I called Val, Shawna Peggy, and Erin later and worked out who would be closer on such short notice. Shawna met me half way and took Thor and his mate Sophie into her care so he can be seen on Monday. Shawna was able to get the collar on him no problem! she made it look so easy!! and even got Thor and Sophie the apple fries from Burger King.... Her Val, and Peggy are all angels. you three have to be God's angels. i am crying with relief knowing that Thor and Sophie are in good hands.
Shawna dont take non of Thor's little attitude. And Sophie is little my little princess and knows it but dont let her get away with murder haha! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Words cannot exspress how grateful i am to you in taking in my baby boy.
Val and Peggy, your efforts for Thor took my breath away. your willingness to help did more for me emotionaly than you could imagin. talking to calm and kind people through all of this has helped me keep my feet on the ground. thank you so much
Erin.. thank you. thank you thank you thank you. Erin is amazing guys. she was at a fed-ex this morning ready to have e-collars over nighted to me. i must be one of the most arrogant suggie moms on here. i thought that just because all my guys were healthy, i checked their pouches regularly, that i could hold off on getting collars till i got Thor and Doyle snipped. i thought they would be just fine....
folks i cant stress this enough... Thor is my first glider. he is the youngest male outta my bunch, and his and my bond is the strongest out of the 4 of them. i love him to the ends of the earth and back again... i know yall feel the same about your babies.. dont wait like i did. dont beat around the bush about getting an e-collar. get one, or two, just to have on hand. have some big straws with vet-tape on hand as well... get yourself a small first-aid kit for things like this. looking back over the past few hours i wish i had listened. i wish i had gone with my better judgment and gotten one. i was risking Thor's folks, if it had not been for Erin, Shawna, Val and Peggy, i would be up poop creek right now with Thor in tow. PLEASE dont make my mistake.
i will keep yall updated daily if i can on his progress...
i miss my little babies so much already.

Big straws and vet tape? For a tail splint??? Something else to add to my glider emergency kit! Thanks for the suggestion!!! I went through a scare with my girls awhile back (REALLY recently!) and I regret that I did not have an emergency fund to fall back on. I'm workin on that now...
Glad everything turned out good so far for Thor!!! Hope you get him back soon and he will be just fine!

yes Peggy suggested it to me for Thor! it was a wonderful idea! i used one of the big straws from a Valero and some of that stick guase stuff. you cut the straw up the middle and wrap it around the tail and tape it so its harder for them to mess with it. she suggested though if your using regular tape to watch out for their fur because it will rip it out. Thor being the ninja that he is got the first one off not 10 mins after we left the house to get him to Shawna, had to use real tape the second time but it worked.

Karen Milas sells the e-collar I used. She's shown me how to do it a jillion times on my Biscuit, so I knew how to do it, Thank God! I'm going to keep our little couple next to each other in the living room, that way they can visit, but Sophie can't "help" Thor clean it.
Jesse, you are a good momma, don't you beat yourself up. You knew to get him help and you did.
You were right, he likes his Amoxil drops, he took them like a champ! He took the pain meds like a champ, too. Right up until the taste hit his tongue! LOL We sure took his attention off of that collar! He ate more apples, probably two of them total, and drank a few licks of pedialyte.

No problem! One of the collars I sent was a Karen Milas collar, cut down because it was too big and she kept yanking it right over her head. The other is a trimmed-down bird collar. At least when they get there, you'll have them on hand in case something else happens (knock on wood that it doesn't, though.) I cleaned them up and sent along some moleskin with them as well.
Good luck, I know it's weird with them not being there, but hopefully Thor will be okay soon!
OFF TOPIC: But, Erin - I am in tears at your kindness and quickness to act today given your own recent loss. Shawna too - running out to pick up this baby after dropping off her own baby for a necropsy this very morning. BOTH of you guys have me in tears. THIS is what it is all about. You are an inspiration to us all.
Jessi - I am praying for your little guy. He is in GREAT hands - I know cause I once had an injured baby in her hands too.

Unfortunately, lessons like this are learned all the time...but it is what helps out the next one, so dont beat yourself up over it. Your glider is going to be fine and they will be back home before you know it.
Start putting all your loose change in a change jar...you will be surprised how fast it adds up and then if you ever need a surprise ER visit again, you will have it.
Jessi, you did good for your babies today. I am proud of you. It is never easy having to hand them over to someone else, but I promise you they ARE in EXCELLENT hands right now.
Go get some rest girl. You and Shawna BOTH need some...
Jessi, I'm just now catching up with everything you've been through today. Here's a HUGE just for being such a good glider mom, moving heaven & earth to get them help.
Now...I've seen that damaged tail way too many times myself (like 4 times now, I think? PLUS the total tail amputation I'm working through with Magellan...that makes 5!The words of encouragement I want to give you is the fact that Thor is going to come out of this JUST FINE. What you need to do while he's visiting Aunt Shawna is to find out WHAT could've caused this: did he get it caught in something? was he bitten by someone? You need to try & figure this out so it doesn't happen again.
Shawna, your heart is even BIGGER than the State of Texas...you're such a sweet angel for helping out today. There's an extra sparkle with YOUR name on it!
Every time I turn around, there are more things being added to my emergency kit...pretty soon I'm going to need to get a SUITCASE with wheels to carry everything! I've gone from a small drawstring purse to a knapsack to a full-size bookbag, and it's STILL growing!
I'll keep all of you in my prayers tonight.

I was worried when I heard about Thor having been through this with a glider whose tail was injured. We all know how tough it is to keep enough money around these days with the price of everything going up and up - my glider bounced right back to health - I'm sure Thor will do the same. You are all wonderful for helping Thor and his caring owner. It makes my heart feel good!

Im so sorry you had to go through this! Its horrible! but I am glad he is doing better.
Easiest credit cards to get if you have NO credit or BAD credit: Capital One Platinum, and Household Bank Platinum. I have those, and have had them since I was 17. I keep them incase of emergencies. If you need some help/tips on raising your credit score, let me know.
Ok well anyway, most vets have a payment plan. Like, pay 100 now, and then 75 next month and 75 the month after, etc. Never walk out of a vet you cant afford without asking that. I really hope everything works out for you, and I am SO sorry.
If you need anything, please dont hesitate to ask.
Jessi, I'm so glad that you got the help you needed. Thor is now going to get the treatment he needs and he'll be home before you know it. See, and some people don't believe in Gaurdian Angels!!! I think you guys are wonderful for helping her in her time of need. This place has a lot of special people here. Suggies are in good hands here. Jess my thoughts and prayers are with you. Keep us updated on you little guy.
Thor is doing well. We had treats at med time tonight. He is really friendly and sweet. I need to get some pictures taken and up. He really is a cute little boy!

Thor is scheduled for his surgery tomorrow. He is a champ. Hasn't touched his tail. I saw a small spot that looked like he might have, but it wasn't.
Silly boy, silly, silly boy. I have a little flashlight by his cage that I look in on him with, he likes to chase it! He takes his meds with no problem, at all. He lets me look at his tail. And, he even lets me feed him treats
I finally saw him and Sophie chatting this morning. They have been hiding from me. But they both ate last night, and they both played with their toys. She almost took a treat from me, she thought about it real hard. I think Thor has been telling her how mean I am. But they were both on the side of the cage right next to each other, following each other around. They were chirping. Very sweet! I'm glad she came.

This is the most heart-wrenching thread I have read in a while. I do believe that suggie moms (and dads) can bond as tightly together as suggies themselves. The dedication you gals have shown eachother these past few days is amazing. I understand where it comes from, because many of you have found yourselves in similar situations and thought: "Oh God, what would I do if nobody had helped me?"
If there was ever a time for a group hug, it would be now. Bless you Jessi, for reaching out to save little Thor. Bless you Shawna, Peggy, Erica, and others; For providing peace for Jessi and Thor in their time of desperate need. I am sending prayers and luck to all of you. It sounds like Thor is going to be A-O-K!
YEAH!!! I'm so glad to hear that Thor is doing great and that he is going to be OK. I just can't say it enough, YOU GUYS ARE GREAT!!! Thor is one lucky glider. Keep us updated!!! Jessi my happy thoughts and prayers are with you and Thor!!!!
I have pictures of Thor for you. Warning, he is a great big cutie, and will cause you to want him! He is a real sweetheart! He is not messing with it at all now. He will be in at 7 in the morning to have this taken care of. So, big hugs for him!

I dropped him off early this morning, and he is on the schedule for between 9 and 1 today. So I should hear by 2 at the latest. I will let Jess know, then post here. Dr Lusk did Melee's tail, and has done seveal other surgeries for me. Plus, he is the one who took care of Cooper when he was sick last year. He's a great doc.

I'm so happy to hear that Thor is doing well! Thank you Jessi and Shawna for making sure this story has a happily ever after. My little girl with a shortened tail is as good as new. I'm sure Thor will be too.
reading all this is just too much!!!!!!!! i kept crying, & hoping that everything was going to turn out well. we do have a special family link, all of us, for each other. all of us who have gone through the pain & agony (&MOSTLY the uncertanty of situations)of having our little babies go thru all these horrible illnesses, & injuries, it really takes alot out of all of us. we have all been there, in one degree or another, & to come on this forum, & be able to read all we do read from each other, it's kind of like, we are all of the same mind(like maybe the 'borg' machine in the star trek show) when one hurts, we all hurt, & of course, when one is happy, we bask in that, also. my new family i have come to know is so special to me. we all are special to each other. why can't the whole world be more like this forum? can you just imagine that? i thought of my desperation that i felt w/sissie & cosmos, & i think back on everyone else here, who has been desperate @ one time or another for their little ones, & that, for the most part, you all helped each other to make it thru all those 'cayotic' & dark times. i am much stronger, now, than i was even just a month ago, & it is because of all of you who genuinly care, & all of you do, as it eakes out on all of our posts, no matter what the subject, we are all there for each other, & this is what love is really all about, we can all feel this in this forum. &, even when i would make a mistake, i am talked to in the most direct & caring way, to show me where i am wrong, & how to fix it. my cosmos is alive today because of all this love i have found on this forum. i am looking forward to the day when i will be able to come to the get togethers you have, to meet you, hug you, & thank you all for all you do. there will be ups & downs w/thor, but everything will turn out ok. look how perfectly everything has turned out so far? & we all have each other to be so greatfull to because of this. i've mushed up enough!!! i will close, now talk @ ya L8R josefine

Well, I solved the food issue for tonight. I took his collar off, and put him in a small travel cage. He is next to me. He went crazy for the yogurt. Now he's just taking a break. He isn't showing any interest in his tail at all. I have some pictures of him that I will post later.

well Shawna said he has a little less than half a tail left. but that actually more than i thought he would have! so its a relief that he will still have some. she has pictures of him and his "new" tail, my poor baby. he did really good thru the whole thing. she even took the collar off him last night long enough for him to eat, and he was so hungry he didnt even care about his tail as long as he had food.
Thanks to her I also know now that Thor really likes blueberry yogurt! so he will be getting that and all his favorite things when he gets home! including his cuddle time, and hours of Animal Planet (he likes watching tv for some reason ).

Yeah, and he enjoys a good walkabout, too. As I discovered when I woke up this morning. Cage door open, glider gone. Anyone that has been to my house knows how big the front area is. My heart stopped. But, the little man was socializing with all the gliders in my glider room. Silly. There is a clip on the door now.
He ate very well after he was back in the collar, we did the bird food dishes and he polished off most of his HPW. He does the water bottle very well, too.

Well as most/some of you know Thor, my youngest male was rushed into an angels hands, that angel being Shawna. His tail was necropsis (sp??) and was amputated as of yesterday. as the vet said he is probably going to be in an e-collar for 2 weeks.... so thanks to Shawna and Erin i now have collars.
as most have said on here it is good to practice using the collar. i did it on my big toe first and then decided to bring out Malachai, who is my most dosile glider. if you take a look at the picture below you can clearly see how he feels about me now. i put the e-collar on him no problem and was glared at! then he looked at me and told me where to go and how to get there! now i know some of yall are probably thinkin "yeah right," but after you get to know your gliders well you can understand them and i am telling you i was tempted on taking a bar of soap to my youngin's mouth!! (not really, j/k)

LOL! BamBam, who is my most testosterone filled glider, went for his neuter today. He was so threatening, they had to empty him from the pouch into a plastic bin and chase him around with the gas mask to put him to sleep. Let's just say, the whole building heard a glider curse words that before today, hadn't been invented! When they tried to put the ecollar on him after wards, he invented even more curse words and the people from buildings on both sides heard him that time! Talk about attitude!
I've taken him out of his collar a couple of times, so he can eat and drink normally, and he always goes over and checks it out. He's picked it up with his nose and shoved his head into the opening. It's adorable!

Thor is doing very well, still He is not liking the collar, and does well out of it. I don't want him to be without it completely, as he is still very interested in his tail. He has been out all day. I am going to give him his pain meds and put him back in it shortly, so that I can go to bed. I'm too nervous to leave him overnight. He is eating well, and takes his meds great. I'm so proud of him.

I picked Thor and Sophie up from Shawna yesterday afternoon. i almost cried when i looked into the pouch. i had that knot in my throat and everything! lol! i was lucky i could talk. he got his meds and ate VERY well last night. i think he is getting sick of me looking in on him. it is sooo good to have them both home.
THANK YOU EVERYONE for your prayers and support. i really dont think i could have held myself together enough to get thru the first part of all this. when i saw his tail for the first time i fell apart... it was like i could hear my heart breaking. but then i came to myself enough to hold him still to get a picture knowing someone here on Glider Central would know what to do. I have never had a really close-knit family... but to me yall are it. Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart.
