Breakdown of months and temps would be nice... Im very interested...

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

I am wondering if we regulate them more on a seasonal basis can we control how often they breed? If they have an off season in OZ would it not be more beneficial to try to give them a break in captivity?

Sure will try to put something together later today or tomorrow as I am about to spend some time in the kitchen mostly for the animals. Nectar mix, home made meatloaf, drying some fruits, cutting up the fresh raw veg mix etc. The animal family eats better than the human one!

Oh do you do realize each part of Australia where you will find gliders has different temps, seasons, habitats and fodder types even in the same states?

Peggy and Suz. I have run up a small, basic temp range data for my own area which is fairly close to Melbourne in Victoria, about 15 minutes drive from the bay and fairly flat with a few small mountain ranges nearby. Victoria, for your information is cooler but drier than say up north in the tropical areas. Gliders and possums do live locally. The temps were recorded from a weather station about 10 miles from me, and I know its not quite accurate as a couple of times we have experienced slightly higher than is recorded. Rare but it has happened! I am rushed for time and will add the average temperatures when I get a chance but the lows and highs are attached below.

There are a lot more gliders/possums in the mountains east of Melbourne about two hours drive from me so I went to compile data for this region too. Healesville's temperature where the Healesville Sanctuary is located. I thought would be of high interest to glider owners and it even snows there on occasion. However, no official climatic data has been recorded in the mountains there since 1990!! The closest weather station to there is miles away on flat land so totally inaccurate. Very disappointing but I can assure you it gets a lot colder than where I live now having lived and frozen my butt off in Healesville and surrounds for some years!

Wild sugar gliders are polyoestrous and can produce a second set of offspring later in the breeding sesson. This has happened with my own gliders outdoors. They will produce joey's out of pouch in September and then again in Late December/early Jan. They don't always produce the two times in one season but if they are going to, you can almost set your watch by it (well by observation of mine anyway).

I almost think that our gliders have adapted to the temps we have provided for them, that if we tried to offer the temps in Australia- we don't know that those temps are safe for them.

Unless temperature has a play in regulating their heat cycles, then I could see we may be able to regulate their breeding cycle and how often they have babies.

I'd like to see how often in a year do "our" gliders have joey's. The one's in the Australia have 2 cycles the most. With the birthing and in pouch time line, do any of the breeders actually have 3 cycles of joeys from the same pair.

Yes, Grace Ann had 3 sets of twins in less than one year. Her hubby was snipped after that. smile

I should have made myself clearer that whilst wild gliders are polyoestrous and can have two sets of joeys in the one breeding season, they generally have one set. Often to have joeys in the latter half of the breeding season usually happens if the first set is lost, seasonal temps are good and there is more food around.

Despite my outside gliders being on a good diet all year round, they still only have joeys (one or two sets) within the same seasonal timeframe of the wild gliders. This suggests the seasons here have a lot to do with the breeding patterns not just the diet. My gliders are more affected by the seasons as they are outside and therefore obviously their systems are fairly attuned to the wild ones.

I notice your temperatures are MUCH lower and MUCH higher than our own regulated air conditioned and heated glider rooms. smile You obviously have no problem tending to your glider family and they survive well within your area due to native habitat and all - it makes me wonder if we're a bit fanatical about our own gliders if the temperature dips to 59˚ or a little over 90˚. It may even out because our gliders usually come from generations of indoor-bred animals slowly becoming more "domesticated" biologically (I use this term VERY LOOSELY!) so they cannot withstand as much extreme temperatures/not having the same habitat to help adapt to those temps. Do you have an opinion on this? Or other Australian users who may keep their gliders outdoors (even if during good season weather)?

How is the humidity though? In one area, 80+ may feel nice but in another, it might feel like you're dieing.
