I know I am continually asking questions and I am sorry it is just that I am new to owning gliders and I keeping thinking of things to ask. But anyway back to my question.
My boyfriend and I smoke cigarettes. We have our gliders in a separate room but dont know if the smoke will bother them being in the other rooms. We dont smoke in their room at all.
Does anyone else smoke and has it bothered your gliders or caused any health issues?

Not glider specific - but someone I work with killed his cat by smoking. It got cancer from second hand smoke. Oh, smoking will kill you too.

First of all, theres no need to apologize about asking questions!! You are just trying to learn and we love that here!! Like I say... There is never a question too small!! I smoke and I will handle my babies after I do it. I will, of course, use hand sanitizer before I touch them, though! If they are in the bonding pouch and it has a window, I will face the window towards my body. I will also try to stand where the wind blows the smoke away from myself and away from them! Edit: And yeah... I do smoke outside, as well!!

I smoke also but outside only , as I have birds, fish tanks and gliders in the house, oh, and a husband who doesn't smoke I also wash my hands before handling any gliders or cage things, that way they never smell it. I have forgotten to wash and went to handle the gliders and they don't like it at all so always wash hands before handling them.
As time goes by and my loves pass. I will forever be greatfull for the time we had together. I will see you soon my loves.

As I've heard before smoking does do damage to their lungs. Not specifically suggies, but I've heard it does it to cats and dogs. So I'm sure suggies are no exception. I think it would be better for you to take the smoking outside, if at all possible to help the health of the gliders. Smoke does leak into walls, get into the carpet and your clothes. I know from experience..my grandparents smoke. Good Luck and welcome to the boards!

if someone could ever want a reason to stop smoking, i think doing it for the children, & our lovely little pets, would be a good reason to stop. i know it is hard to do, but w/todays market out there, it isn't as hard as it used to be. they have meds out now that are very effective, & the gum is now flavored, i'm told, & those patches have gotten alittle cheaper, now, also. i quit @ least 12 yrs ago. the gum @ that time tasted horrible, & the patches were so expensive, after the 2nd week course, i went cold turkey, because i couldn't afford the patch. everyone in my family now loves that i don't smoke. there are 6 of us in my parents family, & we each have a mate, & over the years each one has stopped, we only have 1 left who hasn't quit & we have 11 kids(from the 6), & there are 5 who smoke. the get togethers are better now, since we have less smokers, & we usually make them go outside. smokers smell, & i just cringe @ that, knowing i stunk just like they do @ one time. talk @ ya L8R josefine

Good for you for asking! Smoke is really dangerous to gliders...as it is for you...but especially to them because of their tiny lungs, like Linda said. If you MUST smoke, do it outside your place. Maybe it would be a good motivation to quit though Saves you lots of money and adds years on to your life too.

Yea - it will hurt them - I don't think there is any medical proof - but it's the same as with bird's (no matter how large or small they are) smake affects their lung's and could harm them - I use to live in Illinois and went outside in the mid of winter to smoke due to the gliders and birds -
Good luck

I was raised in a house of smokers, and was the only child that never smoked. Some of my family members have since stopped.
It's good that you wash your hands, but if you smoke you still smell like cigarettes. The odor gets into your hair and clothes, furniture, etc. Given the fact that second hand smoke causes cancer, it can affect your pets too.
My plea would be for you to try to quit, more for yourself than anything else. I know...easy for me to say. But you obviously care a great deal for your gliders since you asked about it. You are at least doing the best, smoke outside, never in their room, and wash your hands.
Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.

I know from people telling me it's harder than you think to stop smoking. So if you REALLY can't stop, please smoke outside for the health of others

As with birds, gliders are VERY sensitive to respiratory issues. So I would definitely smoke outside. But ALSO be very careful of AIR FRESHENERS. I know a lot of my friends who smoke use candles and canned sprays to help with the smell. Those may help their human visitors, but actually HURT their small pets. Gliders can get sick from THOSE as well. Keep THOSE away from their room too. The only exception I am aware of is Oust and Natures Miracle. Not sprayed directly in the air at them, but they are safer near them than others. Another option that can help you is to get them an air purifier for their room.
Oh, and has been mentioned, make sure to wash your hands. This is mostly so the gliders don't smell the smoke as strongly on you. Lotions, smoke, etc.... yeah, they get cranky and want to bite you.

I am a nonsmoker and proud of it!!! It wouldn't hurt to change clothes and use sanitizer before handling gliders. Best thing you can do for yourself and your gliders is to quit smoking.
Just think about all the glider stuff you can buy with the money you buy cigarettes with when you quit. Your gliders will LOVE you with all the goodies purchased with the cig money. (Sorry, just trying to give you an incentive to quit smoking...)

There are 4000+ toxins that come off the end of a lit cigarette; 200 of which are known to be poisonous, and upwards of 60 have been identified as carcinogens. Just a few are: the same bacterial toxin that causes shock during severe bacterial infections and chronic bronchitis, cyanide, arsenic. nickel, chromium, cadmium, lead, polonium-210, vinyl chloride, formaldehyde, pesticides, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, chocolate, citronella oil, myristic acid and ammonia.
Even if smoking is restricted to a single room, the harmful constituents of cigarette smoke can be dispersed throughout the house. Many of these highly dangerous chemicals are in invisible gas form.
Some of these substances are in stronger concentrations in second-hand smoke than they are in the smoke that goes directly into smokers’ lungs.
Not only are these toxins in the air, but they cling and bind with porous materials such as carpet, furniture, clothing, skin and hair. Washing your hands removes toxins from your hands only. They still cling to other surfaces and are transferred by touch. Because these toxins are inhaled into your body, they are present in the air you exhale ans toxins are transferred that way as well.
