I wanted to see if anyone could give me some ideas as to what Sweet Peas issue may be. We have her going to the vet tomorrow, but I'm rather impatient.

She "hunches" as she walks and the movement with her back legs isn't so normal. There is lack of motor functions & strength in just the hind quarters.

She has slowly made progress since Sunday.
I think its a calcium deficiency.

That sounds like what Lilly walks like. The vets I've had her too think she has a calcium deficency. Her hind legs are very small in comparison to her front half. She walks fairly crablike. She was like that when I got her. If you look in my avatar she is the one in the front.

The start of HLP? Maybe? Or a back issue, but I am thinking malnutrition is causing some HLP since the family you rescued them from "forgot" to feed them often! Call Todds Lane and ask to see them ASAP. Or where ever you were able to get the appt.

What diet are you feeding them at the moment? Was she walking like that when you got her, or after you brought her home? But this is what my guess would be.

She was already walking like that when we brought her home although it isn't as noticable as before. We have them on the Insectivore-Fare (as the staple) with mealworms, fruits & veggies & Gliderade nectar... Glider-Cal with Glider-Booster or Vionate (rotating the vitamins).

But I have picked up the ingredients to start them on the HPW diet. Which I think will help her put on some healthy weight.

The previous family had them on a diet of bread, boiled chicken, and veggies... NO vitamins what so ever.

I have read somewhere that Darcy's diet (Ensure diet) is great for malnurished gliders or sick gliders, you may want to look into that too!!!!!

I just know that you NEVER use the choc. flav. of the ensure. See if that might help her some.
I feed HPW and they all love it!

**makeing the statement that I am not a vet and don't know what is best for you to do, but wanted to give some ideas possibly**

As previously mentioned, there are several possibilities as to what's going on with her. It good that you have her scheduled to see a vet tomorrow. I would not wait on this, because they can go down hill very quickly if not treated right away.
I hope that things will be alright.

I had a glider in my care for a short time that walked similarly to what you are describing. He would shuffle and was always hunched up. We thought HLP, but decided to do x-rays anyway. After x-rays, found out that he had some kind of injury (the vet said possibly a bad fall or hitting something when he jumped) when he was younger and his rib cage healed incorrectly, so his internal organs weren't able to grow right (he only survived to be about 9 months OOP).

I'm not saying that is the situation with Sweet Pea, I'm just suggesting that you don't let the vet jump to conclusions without testing to be sure. I would have x-rays to double check that everything is ok (this will also help determine HLP, depending on how the leg bones look).

I hope the vet can find something to help. hug2

If we never loved, then maybe we would never feel pain. Love anyway. It's worth it.

I hope everything is okay.

My apologies I thought I had already posted an update... Silly me. dunno

THe vet stated: No bone damage or fractures... Doesn't look like a case of HLP. More like a case of malnutrition and neglect.

It took her a couple days to adjust to her nail trimming, that was the main factor in her slow climbing. Because they were so long she had trouble grasping and such. Since we have had her on a healthier diet & vitamins her back end has loosened up immensely and her coat is improving. Still a bit of hunching but nothing nearly as severe as when she first came to her loving safe home. Lordy she's spoiled. I love her to pieces! heart

I can tell how well she's doing beacuse she's keeping up with Cylus! clap
