Why is it that almost no one is interested in keeping/breeding albino gliders?

I don't think it's that no one is interested in them. It's just that 1)they're extremely hard to breed for, 2)there are only a couple albinos in existence, 3)the breeders that DO have albinos are hogging them(hmph! lol), and 4)most of the albinos/albino hets are throwing creminos instead of albino. :\ I, personally, have a 100% albino het, but he's not paired with a girl yet because I can't decide what to pair him with yet. Other albino hets are going to be too closely related so I'm going to either pair him with a classic gray girl or with a possible cremino het from one of my 66% cremino het girls. It's a tough decision...

Personally, I like the white color but not the red eyes, so I stick with the leu's.

See what I mean? They're hogging them all! I LOVE abinos and would die to have one! Of course, I've accepted the fact that I probably will never get one, lol.

They're too expensive! And how many people can afford them once you have joeys?

If I decide to get another breeding pair of gliders, I know that I am going to go for the Cream's- I am with gliderma though, the red eyes are a little weird to me. The creams though are about the prettiest things I have seen. Whitney

I think that many people are interested in albinos, but they are very expensive and extremely rare. personally though, I don't care for albinos.... There's just something about the red eyes that creep me out! Leus and mosaics however......

In the 2 years I've been on the boards I've only ever seen 1 albino for sale and he was 6 years old and within seconds of him being posted I think Roxanne probably had a dozen people on a list to get him, lol. So, aside from cost, I think that the biggest factor is that they're just never available.

I agree with Nicole, I've been looking around for my second and final breeding pair of gliders and hopefully I'll be getting Apollo from Erin! I personally don't agree with having 12-40 gliders. It seems cruel and people must not have social lives! And I have talked to Albino breeders and most Albino het's HAVE been spitting out Cream-inos at us! I've been told its because Cream-inos are the t- gene and Albinos are the t+ and mostly I've sadly seen people breeding the hets with leus or leu hets, and the t- is just more easily passed along with the leu lines? But yes, it DOES seem fishy that all the Albino breeders are hoggin'em all! AND their joeys seem to like to laugh at us and spit lovely silky Cream-inos at us..hmm I just can't help to add it all up! ~Erich

Erich, there's only 1 albino line(Moe and Disco) and so if you paired 2 100% albino hets then they'd most likely be 1st cousins. So, the good breeders are breeding out their albinos and albino hets with non-albino hets so that they can breed them out and then breed their offspring with other albino hets in order for the pairings to not be so close. That's why albinos and albino hets are being paired with non-hets or with leu hets.

LOL... I want albinos... But I have to wait until my husband is ready to face the possibility of paying that much for gliders... We are still working on the price of leus. He just doesn't get that gliders are so special and so expensive!

I think albinos are gorgeous! And i love the red eyes <3 I've never seen an albino though. Just albino hets.

I am not sure... but I think once the T+ Cremino is in the lineage of the T-White the damaged gene which is responsible for lack of pigment is corrected by the T+ Cremino gene. That can't be true because Sheila's albino het pair had 2 albinos AND 2 creminos. I was reading online about T+ and T- genes and from what I've read and heard(from other breeders) is that in order to produce albinos, BOTH parents must have the T- gene. However, only 1 parent needs the T+ gene to produce T+ albinos(creminos). So, if you pair a T- albino with a T+ albino(a cremino), then you will never get T- albinos, only T+ albinos. However, if you pair a T- albino with a T+ albino that ALSO has the T- gene, then you can get T- AND T+ albinos. Sooo...I assume that Sheila's albino hets both had the T- gene and at least one of them also had the T+ gene. Perhaps when you pair 2 gliders that BOTH have the T+ and T- genes, then you'll only get T+ albinos(creminos) because the T+ gene might be strong then the T- gene? That would explain why albino hets are throwing creminos and not albinos.

wow Nicole. Although I understood what you typed, it still made me a little dizzy!
For me, albinos of ANY SPECIES of animal are abnormal and just wrong to breed for. There are just too many genetic issues with albinos. And since these genetic issues are seen in every other species of albino animals, I just don't believe there is something magicial about sugar gliders that would prevent them from having the same genetic issues.
I've also not heard of any albino gliders living to the ages that greys (or other colors) are living to. I have a 13+ year old grey glider. I would much rather have a long time companion than spend a small fortune for one that MIGHT live half as long.
620-704-9109 Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.
I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance

All I know is albino anything (humans, gators, rabbits) is not natural... There is a reason why they are rare...and it just seems wrong to me to be breeding them together...

Yes they are beautiful... but I do not think that we should be breeding pets for beauty...
