If he is used to the branches, then I wouldn't remove them, just place hammocks a few inches below them. The hammocks will only confuse him for a little while, then he'll get used to them and start using them regularly. At first, you will need to "show" him where the hammocks are. Put him on the hammock, then supervise him climbing around on it... if he gets close to an edge that's not against a cage wall, then gently place your hand along the edge next to him so he can feel that you're "warning" him. He'll get the idea very quickly. If he gets close to an edge along a cage wall, allow him to discover the cage wall and to then climb or descend from the hammock so he can learn where it is in relation to the rest of the cage. I think the fringes along the hammocks help a lot with that, because he will feel the fringe as he climbs the cage wall and will know the hammock is "coming up"
