I have heard that if you are having trouble getting your gliders to bond with each other you can put a drop of vanilla extract on each glider and place them in neutral territory.

I am planning on trying this out tomorrow night and I was wondering if I could get some feedback. I would like to know if anyone has had any success with this technique and if there are any tips you would like to share.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! I really want my gliders to enjoy being around each other and I believe there is hope for them!

Thank you!

I have not tried this technique, so I can't speak from personal experience. This link, Extreme Introductions, describes the technique.

I dont know about using extract for bonding...the only thing I WILL say about that is extract contains alot of alcohol, so use alcohol free if you do decide to use it.

I did it the last time (and final time, as they get along now) I intro'd my gliders...I'm not sure if it was the reason for my success but I don't think it hurt. Vanilla extract is really strong so you don't actually need to put any of the liquid on your glider at all, I took a q-tip and dipped it in the vanilla and then just barely touched it to the top of their heads, just like one quick swipe. It didn't even dampen their fur. And they smelt like cookies! lol Just from that tiny of a amount, so I personally wouldn't put a actual drop on them. They seemed to really like the smell (probably because it smells like sweet good food)
I did this at like 10-11am, I got my tent out, got it all ready for the intro, and set their pouches not directly in front of eachother, but sorta beside eachother and tilted so they could kinda see eachother. Moon darted into Star's pouch, Star made one quick noise...and then they were fine. It was AMAZING. Far cry from the immediate scrapping that was going on earlier. I gave them both a treat and carried them the rest of the day with no problems from either. They live together now and seem to be getting along well. They are still establishing their dominance roles, but I can tell they like eachother and they never actually fight but I do hear a occasional 'chit chit'.
I would definitely try the vanilla method again. But I also put in more work to their bonding than just the vanilla, but when I felt it was a good time to intro them again...I think it eased tensions?

In my post asking for help about getting my gliders to like eachother someone said "You'll know when the time is right to intro them again" and that kinda stuck with me, and I really did know. And it worked out that time. I wish you good luck! Keep us posted

Edit: Try to remain calm also helps. I know it's crazy scary when they fight and the anticipation of one of them hurting the other is hard and terrible to think about, but I really tried to remain calm. I was sitting in the tent with a pile of fleece next to me, and I put my legs out straight in like a V shape and set their pouches so my legs made like a little barrier around them. I also watched a video of a girl intro'ing her gliders and it really helped me. I'm going to try to find it for you.

vanilla masks the giders' individual scents AND acts as an attractant for gliders. It is important to remember to use ONLY a SINGLE drop and ONLY between the glider's shoulder blades. If other methods fail, this method MIGHT work... HOWEVER< it is also important to remember thqat some gliders are just NOT meant to EVER get along with one another. they all have personalities, just like we do. Imagine someone you just can't STAND to be around AT ALL... now imagine a HUGE giant keeps trying to make you LIVE with that person... (LOL)... it's the same principle smile

I've used it on puppies and kittens. Never tried it on gliders.

Thanks everyone! I am going to give this a try. I really think there is hope for my gliders. They are not getting into a glider ball.

What is happening is that Tink is scared of the other gliders for some reason. When they go into check it out she crabs her head off (sometimes tries to bite) and run away. Most of the time the boys will either let her run off or chase her. I would say that they are not being aggressive for the most part. After a few times of Tink crabbing at them and trying to bite them they do crab back at her, but that doesn't happen all the time.

I have been switching their pouches every other day and their cages are pushed against each other (she is in a rept and they are in a cage so they can't reach each other at all) and I usually have all three on me during the day (the boys in a sissy or my bonding shirt and Tink in a bra pouch).

Thanks again for all the advice. I have been trying to do intros for a month now and just want Tink to have glider companions and for me to relax, lol!

I know!!! I can't believe it! This worked almost like magic! I am so happy that Tink will have some glider pals to run around with and keep her warm at night!

How is the intro doing a few days later?

I have tried the vanilla extract with intro's that didn't go well before the vanilla and they were not successful after the vanilla also.

One thing I have wondered with using the vanilla to mask their scent, what happens once the neutral smell wears off?

I am so happy to hear that the intro's went well!!!! Yeah!!! I also used vanilla, not sure if that was the magic but they are still best of buddies for months now.

Wondering if this is still working?? Ashley - are you there??? I want to try this out on my 2 sets of babies. I have not been able to put them together yet. This vanilla intro is my next step. Please let us know if this worked out.

Sorry, I should have posted about this more.

I was a little disappointed in that this didn't work out. We are still working at it. The night this worked I put them all in the same rept. I heard a lot of crabbing, but every time I would check on them they seemed alright. In the morning I found Tink sleeping in the wheel and the boys were happily sleeping in the pouch. I also notice that there was more food left over than I thought should be. I didn't want to give up on them, so I gave them one last night. The same thing happened, so I put them back in their own cages. (They were all in Tink's since she has the large rept)

The main problem is that Tink is scared of the boys. She would crab and lunge at them. For the most part the boys are curious about her, but after a few times of getting crabbed or bit at, they crab back at her...which makes everything worse.

I have tried the vanilla again, but it never gave the same results as that first night. Since this is more fear based and not aggression, I am not sure what the best bonding technique to use is. I know they can be great together and I know it is possible since during that night they were stacked up on top of each other. Rufio was on the bottom, then Tink, then Tootles. AND they were cleaning each other!

What do you all think?

I have a quad (4 females) that is together for over a year now and they are doing great. A few crabs now and then but still doing great. When they start their crabbing, I put in 2 dishes of food and 3 pouches. I eventually cut the pouches down to 2 (which all of my cages have) and the food bowl is down to 1 with a smaller one with staple food. Sometimes it's the food or the sleeping arrangements. IF I hear any continuous crabbing then I separate the one that is having a 'problem'. I do this for only a day. I was told by my friend Yania that maybe they are just having a bad attitude day or just jealous. But this would happen with ANY group of babies. Everyone has mood changes, just like us humans. I am still going to try the vanilla thing with 4 of my other babies (1 male and 3 females). The male and femal are together and I have 2 females together. I am trying to get the 4 of them together I just wanted to see how you were doing with it. I would keep trying but keep a close eye on them all. Maybe she doesn't like the smell of the boys!! LOL Keep in touch, please! and Good Luck!!

LOL, you could be right about the her not liking the smell of yucky boys! Haha!

I will keep at it! I know they can be together. Do you think I should put them all together in the same rept or keep trying until they seem to get along perfectly? Right now Tink is crabbing whenever a boy gets near her...mostly. Sometimes she does not, but will quickly run away from the boys. I have her in a 260 gal rept, so there would be plenty of room for them all but I didn't want to push her into this.

This is my first intro and it seems that no matter how much you read there is sooo much to learn, lol!

Do you think I should go the tent time route or vanilla extract in the tub? They are much calmer in the tub, but almost to the point to where they don't really move at all, so I don't know if this is the right way or not.
