Does any know if it's safe to use ceramic heat emitter with a PVC wire cage? The bulb I am looking at is 100 watt to go with porcelain clamp lamp and I plan to hang it 6 inches away from the cage as suggested so the gliders don't get their tail burned.

I want to make sure this is ok and not going to cause any danger on melting or fuming the coating. If that's the case, I guess I will have to use space heater instead.

We use a 150 watt heat emitter on a PVC coated wire cage with no problems... I set it down low, as "heat rises." Wasn't sure how warm it was really keeping the cage until I was wiping down the inside last week and the emitter was on. It was very nice and snuggly inside! I was surprised as we keep our house at 68.

I was also wondering about these...

I did find this link. They even have a thermostat which is really cool!

you will be putting out a lot of money for the thermostat. We use a 6.00 clamp on shop light with our heat emitter, clamp it to a floor lamp 6 inches from the cage, point it up. It is low on the lamp post. If it seems too warm during the day when they are asleep inside pouches, I turn it off, turning it back on around 5:30 or 6:00 pm. As I said, we keep our house at 68 degrees, and they seem fine. The thermostat is cool, but I just think it is way over priced. You can get heat emitters in different wattages too, if you are concerned that it might get too hot for the gliders.

I agree, that is a really expensive set up for what it is.

If you use a ceramic heat emitter, it is best to make sure it is several inches from the cage (at least 5) and direct it at one corner of a very large pouch, or hang two pouches next to each other and direct it at only one of them. They need to have the option of sleeping away from it if they want to, so is best to have a 'warm' pouch and a 'cool' pouch so they can regulate their own temps as they need to.

If you put your hand against the side of the cage (in front of the heat emitter) and it is close enough to make your skin get really hot, it is too close.

You can also put them on a timer, so they turn on after you put them in their cage for the night (after play time) and turn off before you would get them out (if you do) in the morning. Heat emitters are VERY hot and VERY dangerous and take a while to cool down. NEVER let your glider out of the cage when there is a hot emitter as they can very easily (accidentally) jump on it and it can cause severe burns.

If you do get one, make sure that the lamp you get has the high heat porcelain or ceramic socket. The plastic ones can get too hot, melt and cause a fire. Just an FYI..we used to use them with our Iguanas.

Also, I know it may sound like common sense for some but I know some people don't think about it. Please make sure your dome that you're putting your heat emitter into is rated for the correct wattage of bulb you're using or you're asking for a fire. Also as Sabrina said, make sure it's a ceramic socket and not plastic.
