Alright, so how often does everyone buy new things? And let me put this in context....I mean how often does everyone ON AVERAGE purchase new cage stuff (pouches, toys etc...) because THE OLD STUFF IS WORN OUT, not because it's cute and we're all addicted to gliders? For example, how often do you replace:

1. cage pouches
2. bonding pouches
3. wooden perches, ledges and bars
4. blankies
(or anything else I'm not thinking of...)

I've had stuff for about 6 months now, and I'm thinking the wooden stuf especially needs to be replaced? Is 6 months a reasonable time to start anew? Also, I don't want to replace everything at once obviously because I still want him to have his scent in the cage. Lastly, what if anything has anyone found that doesn't trap odor the way wood does but serves the same purpose (aka bars across the cage, perches...)?

Most of my things last me about 8 months to a year. pouches i go threw faster as they seem to dig in them. I do not use any wood items in my cage though.

I think the key is to monitor the wear and tear on them, washing puts a lot of stress on toys. I still have some toys that are a year old that look brand new (used every single day)... I wont toss them out. I do get sick of seeing the same stuff in the cages and have sent a lot of my used items to Shawna for her rescues. I like new stuff...

The only wood I have are toys that hang, (bird toys) and soaking and scrubbing them in hot water keeps them clean and usable. I switch the toys out from time to time to keep it interesting, but some of my wood toys I've had for almost two years and they look new. The same goes for my pouches. I seem to have been blessed with 3 non-chewing, non-destructive gliders. The only thing they ever chew on are their fresh tree branches. I have never had to replace any pouches (bonding or sleeping) since I have had my gliders. (I got my first glider 2 years ago.)

One of the main toys in my cages are ropes. They are about an inch thick and I buy them by the foot at hardware stores. I don't know if these would work for gliders that chew, but mine love them. I hang them vertically and horizontally in place of wooden bird pouches. I tie knots in them and mine love to jump from one to another. They stay clean pretty well and are easy to wash in a sink or tub. I also use baby links. They are good for climbing and can be used to hang other toys from ropes and vines.

We use baby links or shower curtain rings, across the cage instead of wooden perches. Very easy to clean and they don't retain the smell like wood.

- We rotate out cage pouches after about 6 months. This is usually when they start to show some wear. We are going to rotate out ALL pouches in favor of larger pouches here in about a month.

- bonding pouches have lasted a year without any major wear. The only exception is the cloth lanyards, and you can buy those in packs of 12 at Office Depot. We replace them every 3 months (about)

- The wooden branches we get are replaced every couple of months (when the babies have chewed through the bark).

- Blankies are replaced when they show wear. Varies from one month to several months.

We also replace the food bowls every 6 months, and have gone through 2 glider kitchens (they like to chew on the access hole, making the plastic fray).

Guess I am lucky here too.. non chewers and non destructive little ones… I learned fast that wood just does not work in my cages, I have some very sensitive family ( I some times feel like I am living with a blood hound) so since the wood holds the odor the worst I just stopped using wood in my cages… my pouches have held up pretty good too, any that have shown wear I just do not use, but I also found so good vendors that make great products… I also use bridges and a lot of the fleece boas in my cage…

Good info, thank you....I guess I'm thinking it might be time to replace the wooden bars (you know the kind that usually come with a cage...). Also, I have one of those perches for nails that are usually for birds, and that seems to be getting a bit smelly too...I've soaked all his stuff in hot water with vinegar, but since there's still some smell, I'm thinking it's time....his cage pouch actually looks pretty good, he's a bit of a chewer, but not a chewer of pouches, he's more a chewer of toys....I think it's because his pouches are so well made, I get Pillow pouches from Karin, which never show wear really, so we're safe there....then again, I might just be looking for an excuse to BUY BUY BUY for Gizzy lol!
John, what bridges are you talking about?
