Where do you buy it from?

Is the live fly pupae really that bad?

I read somewhere that it stinks, is this true?

I would think it would be better to give them live fly pupae instead of the dehydrated, right? dunno

I purchased mine from Sugarglidersuz, or you can order it from exotic nutrition.

My two will not touch it! And yes, it STINKS!

Mine never liked dried or live. You can buy live phoenix worms which are soldier fly pupae from most insect retailers.

That is something I don't think I could stomach either.

Phoenix worms are raised as feeders, just like mealworms and feeder roaches, etc. You are definitely not supposed to go pull fly pupae out of your garbage bags and hand it to them, just as you are not supposed to pick up the roach that runs across your floor. Feeders are an entirely different insect. thumb

Let me tell you, I ordered the live pupae on accident instead of dehydrated. Actually, I'm going to copy and paste my post from another board so I don't have to type it all. Suffice it to say, IT REEKS and IT'S GROSS!!!! LOL I was told how to boil it. Useless but entertaining fact..when boiling live pupae, it pops like Rice Krispies! I had posted this after I boiled it:

"MY HOUSE SMELLS LIKE A COMPOST PILE!!!! This is the most digusting thing I've ever done. My family is so mad at me! LOL They are boiled but I'm petrified to bake them. I don't want this smell in my oven! I think I'll go with the freezing option. LOL I'm sure you were all wanting the play by play but holy mother of nastiness!"

Yes, it was really THAT bad. I will never make that mistake again.

Ok, I think I have been convinced to stick with dehydrated after that post.

I was just trying to figure out if it was healthier for them to have them live and not freeze dried, and thought maybe I could wear a mask but not sure if I want my whole house to smell like a compost pile. YACK!!!

What makes them smell so bad? Is it what the company feeds them and keeps them in?

Must be...it literally smelled like compost or a dirty barn, but worse. So gross.

Did they smell that bad before you cooked them? I only got a few, but I didn't remember them smelling. I just tried feeding them live and then froze and threw them out when they wouldn't eat them.

They smelled, but not to the extent that they did once they heated up and started boiling.

I had thought about getting or raising fly pupae years ago but decided against it because of the grossness of it all. Then I was reading a recipe tonight and saw this, guess I'll stick to my original plan. Thanks for the warning! No fly pupae here, and besides, my gliders give kisses and some HAVE to have a mouth kiss, ewwwwwwww!!!!!
