Last night they started to vomit just a little. I took them immediately to the e- vet and they are now on metronidazole, which the vet said is an antibiotic which also has some action against giardia just in case. Basically, nothing showed up on the fecal float and smear so we're taking the shotgun approach. Here's what happened. When I fed them last night, I opened the cage so they could come out to play. I was just reading on the bed, but noticed a strange movement out of the corner of my eye and looked up to see Jeepers on the floor doing the heaving motion that dogs do when they're trying to get something up. Nothing did come up, but she ran a little ways and did it again and this time it seemed that although nothing came out of her mouth, she seemed to swallow it back down. She was also easier than usual to catch/pick up. I took them both, but thought Peepers was okay. Well, while we were there, Peeps was in my shirt and I started feeling her moving funny too, and when I looked in, she vomited just a few drops of clear fluid on my chest. The vet did a fecal smear and float but nothing showed up. They didn't appear to be dehydrated at all (thank goodness) but she did a sub-Q anyway just in case. She also started them on metrodinazole (sp?). They each took a full dose while there. So now I guess I'm just waiting to see how they do. Oh, I forgot to mention (here, but I did tell the vet) that they haven't been eating as well for the past two nights, although they have eaten some. Even at the vet's they each ate some mealies, although Jeepers was not very enthusiastic, and let Peepers have part of hers. This morning, Peepers seems pretty normal, but Jeepers is obviously still not feeling too well. I tried injecting the medication into a mealie and that worked okay. They definitely noticed the mealies tasting bad and were shaking their heads as they ate them, like "yuck, but mmmmm its a mealie, but yuck..." I think next time I'll do it like Jen illustrated with the towel on the sticky in this forum. In a little while I'll call their regular vet and make sure there's not something else I should be doing. The e- vet had a little glider experience but she wasn't a glider expert by any means and admitted it. Oh, and many thanks to Jen/Xfilefan for helping when I called her. I'm not sure what time it was in Utah, but it was near or after midnight here. She made me feel a lot better by talking to the vet on the phone. I just wish there was something else I could do to get them better faster. The meds are just once a day, which is a good thing, but it leaves me feeling kinda helpless the rest of the day.

Sending lots of good well wishes to Peepers and Jeepers...and a big hug for you The vomiting sounds similar to my glider when I first noticed she got sick (giardia) except her vomit was a brown liquid. With my guys the only other signs I noticed at the start was a decreased appetite....then came increased drinking, lethargy, and diahrrea. Also, just so you can watch with your guys, for whatever reason, the mealies seemed to start the vomiting fits for my gliders. I think since they are the hardest thing in their diet to digest, they were upseting an already upset stomach. It may just be a fluke thing with my guys, but maybe something to watch for in yours. Good luck to you...I know we're still battling it here...so sending lots of hugs and prayers your way

I'm glad that Peepers is feeling better this morning, I wish Jeepers was feeling better also. It's no fun giving medicine using the towel method, but I've found that it's by far the easiest in the long run. to you all. I hope everyone is feeling better soon.

We already spoke-sort of, but I hope your other little one starts feeling better, too. Like I said, any worsening at all or no improvement, in either one, and you may want to go back to the vet. Metro has some action against anaerobic bacteria, according to my vet, in addition to parasites, but none really against the gram positive/negatives (ecoli, strep, etc.) Keep us updated. And I think it was around 11 here...but since my schedule is nocturnal that's like midday to me-so don't worry about it at all. I usually sleep between 4 or 5 am to noon or 1pm-and for a sick glider I TRULY don't mind getting up, even then.

Thanks to everyone for all the well-wishes. krispifsu - I went back and read your thread about little Amaya again. We do seem to be in the same boat. When I got home, I got their pouch out but didn't get them out of it. Their little faces seemed bright as they looked at me. None of that droopy sick glider look, thank goodness. I'll know more when they actually get up later. I did put some gliderade in a syringe and they both took a fair amount. I thought it would be good not only to make sure they stay hydrated, but to give them something they actually like from a syringe so they don't just associate it with yucky stuff. I spoke to the tech at my regular vet's office. She has gliders herself and she said they really see a lot of them. Anyway, she said the vet there reviewed the fax of what was done at the e- vet's and he said he thought it sounded like a good plan. I will call again tomorrow though and see if I can actually talk to the vet himself and ask about the action of metro against bacteria like e. coli, etc.

Last night they did play. One of them ran on the wheel, but I'm not sure who because it was dark in the room when I heard the wheel going. I wish I'd checked because Jeepers is the one who uses it most, but I don't think she's feeling well enough to do it yet. If she was, I'd feel better about how she's doing. I was up late cleaning, cleaning, cleaning everything in their room. I scrubbed their cage top to bottom with Lysol Kitchen clean-up and I soaked the bottom of it in a bleach solution in the bathtub, soaked all the toys in bleach solution, washed all the pouches and blankies with hot water, vacuumed (after putting in a new vacuum cleaner bag so it didn't blow the old dust/germs all over the room), washed the large piece of fleece that covers the stand their cage sits on as well as the sheets and cover that's on the bed in that room in hot water. They weren't particularly pleased that I removed every trace of their scent from everything. Usually I wash the pouches at a separate time from the rest of the cage. They ate most of their Wambaroo mix and some of their honeydew melon last night, but I think that was mostly Peepers. I'm still worried about Jeepers, although I haven't seen her vomit anymore or show signs of the tummy cramps since she's been on the meds. She just still doesn't feel well. I think later I will force feed her a little of the staple just to make sure she's getting some nutrition. I have to go get ready for work now.

Poor babies
I know with Amaya it took about 4 days on the meds before there was a real noticeable change in her behavior. The giardia seemed to hit her worse than all the others (probably since she was nursing two joeys) and it is taking her a while to recover. She is stil a little thinner and tired than I would like, but the the meds took a few days before she really seemed to perk back up. She wasn't eating much at all during that time so I went in and handfed her yogurt, BML, and gatorade about every hour. She wouldn't make the move to actually go feed herself, but if I offered it to her in her pouch she seemed to eat more that way.
Sending lots of huge your way and hoping for a speedy recovery for them both

Thanks Kristin. It really helps to hear from you (and everyone else as well!), and hear that you are seeing improvement with Amaya but it took a few days. Of course I don't know for sure that this was giardia since their fecals came back negative for anything, but I suspect that's what it is. Just the fact that she's definitely not getting worse and is maybe a little better gives me hope that this is the correct treatment.
I fed Jeepers some Wambaroo mix with the syringe before I left for work and she took a full cc. I think Peepers is eating enough on her own. They also both had a couple of yogurt drops with their meds this morning.

I'm really glad that you haven't had any more vomiting from them. It's also great that Peepers is eating on her own, & that you got Jeepers to eat something too. Hopefully the meds will really kick in soon and they'll both be feeling more like themselves.

Thank you for the update, Sundra. Just keep watching. As long as she's not dehydrated, you could also try feeding some Ensure with a syringe as well, to get nutrition down her (don't if she's got any dehydration-which I think you said she didn't). Great news that they're not heaving any more. Keep us updated, and know you and your babies are in our prayers. Hoping Jeepers starts pulling out of it and feeling more like herself.

Kara, you can call me anytime you feel a real need. my cell number is 913 544 8090 and my home number is 913 471 4993. But, If I'm on the computer, the home number will be busy, I'm on dial up. Also, my cell doesn't always have coverage because of my location. But know, if you ever are in a situation with your gliders, all you have to do is come on here and post that you need to TALK to someone and I'm sure you will have all sorts of volunteers.
Sundra, I'm so glad to hear J and P are doing better. (or at the very least, no worse). I know I have been remiss in posting but you and the girls have been in my thoughts and prayers.

Good news! Jeepers is eating on her own! Peepers is actually CHOWING DOWN which is also wonderful, but I was the most worried about Jeeps. Of course, tonight I served the most tempting meal I could think of: avocado and watermelon, along with their staple. Jeepers didn't actually go to the food dish herself, but when I offered her avocado she readily took it and ate it all. Same with the watermelon. She ate a pretty good amount too, several pieces almost sugar-cube sized. Also, today when I checked on her after work, she offered me a nice little present, which I took right away to the vet's office to have a fecal smear done on (wasn't quite big enough for a float). This one came out negative as well. The first night, we only got a sample from Peepers, who wasn't as sick and it came out negative. This was the first chance I had to get anything from Jeepers. I don't know if it's good or bad that this one was negative too. The first night I really wanted something to show up so we'd know what we were up against, but now I'm just going to look on the bright side and say it's negative because the treatment is working. I've talked with 3 vets about this (the e- vet, Jeeper's regular vet Dr. Echols who sees MANY gliders and my friend who is a general vet) and all three said they thought we were on the right track with this treatment. Metronidazole is an antibiotic although not a broad spectrum antibiotic, plus it has good activity against giardia. However, the narrow spectrum that it does cover are generally things that tend to cause problems in the gut is what my friend the vet told me. Anyway, hopefully this means they are completely on the road to recovery. This is my first experience with a sick glider and now I know what everyone is talking about when they say how much you worry! It has also "brought me home to Jesus" about some things I had gotten careless about, like not always removing the previous night's meal in the morning (I got lazy thinking they'd be asleep all day and not get into it) and not changing the water every day. No more of that! I am staying on task from now on!

I'm so happy to hear that! Now just keep getting better for your Mom..hear? Such good news! And thanks for the info on metro...I didnt' know it was an antibiotic as such...see..years with gliders and we're still learning, here! But not a broad spectrum, which is why my vet likely put it how he did and we used it with Riker in combo with the broad spectrum, so that makes sense.
