had a .2 ounce baby rejected that was able to survive? I found a little boy from my lion pair yesterday night that was out of pouch way too early. I tried to get his mama to let him back in pouch, but he just couldn't get in. I made some wombaroo milk for him to see if he would eat and he did. As soon as he had his fill I placed him back with parents in hopes that he would go back in. When I checked this morning he was alive, but still out of pouch. My fiance and I fed him again and placed him back. Tonight I switched over to a clean pouch and when I did I found skin and blood from a joey and became very sad. Then I saw him. Still alive and still outside the pouch. At this point I have pulled him and am doing what I can to help him live. I weighed him and found him to weigh only .2 ounces. Jaz has had a baby in pouch for a while now and I noticed a second bump about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I guess there were 2 other babies that went into pouch at that time. Now I'm fighting to save one, one has been eaten, and the last (also the oldest) seems to be doing just fine with mom. Jaz is a first time mother (as far as I know) so I guess it comes with the territory. If anyone has any advice or comments please let me know.

Thanks,
Devin

((HUGS)) for you and your baby. THIS sticky has valuable information to help you with this joey , have you increased the protein for Mom?

Praying that you have a good night.

.2 ounce is about 5.7 grams. That is very tiny but if he is eating, he stands a chance. Make sure you keep him warm and I would offer food, small amounts, every half hour until he gains some weight. At that size, they are usually still ip and nursing almost continously.

[:"green"]It is amazing that this little guy has survived away from his mama as long as he has. However, given the fact that you have been able to get him to eat, he has a good chance of making it. Continue to hand-feed him every 1/2 hour or so, keeping him with you as much as possible and using an incubator to warm him up before feedings if necessary. When he eats for you, how much is he eating? If you haven't already, you can check out my page about Hand Raising A Joey for info on how to make an incubator, etc. Feel free to contact me if you need anything else... One of the biggest challenges you will face, other than getting him to eat, is keeping him warm enough. I doubt he has much fur at this point, so regulating his temperature will be very important...

he will eat quite a bit for his size. I let him eat until he pushes the food away, is that bad? He has no fur at all. I will continue to feed him every half-hour and weigh him tonight. Do I need to try to make him use the bathroom?

Thanks to everyone

Yes, you do need to stimulate him to use the bathroom. I use a tissue (because I can see if he is going) but many use q-tips. Gently rub his cloaca until he goes. Do this each time you feed him.

The baby, which I thought was a he, may actually be a she. Anyway, the baby did not gain any weight today, but seems to be eating well. We are doing our best to feed as often as possible and keep as warm as possible. We did see it use the bathroom today so everything from that end appears okay. We have been feeding wombaroo milk and then feeding some pedialite. Should I mix the pedialite in with the wombaroo?

I would offer them seperately with the majority being the wambaroo as it has the nutrients that he/she needs most followed by a drink of the pedialite. Hand raising (as i have recently learned) is HARD! I got so tired from lack of sleep (waking up so often). Hang in there.

Update on the joey! Still eating and is going to bathroom by itself. Yesterday we discovered that the joey that Jaz did have in pouch was no longer in pouch either. It was out all day and when we checked at night it's skin was very wrinkled (dehydration I guess). We have pulled it as well and are now feeding every half hour or whenever they will eat more. They are staying together and usually on me. No weight gain, but eating pretty well and not showing signs of dehydration. That is as good as can be at this point, I think.

Took babies to vet today. Vi has decided they shall be named Jenna and Little Jon Bear. Anyway, the vet said that Jon Bear looks great and believes he'll make it with no problems as long as we keep doing what we've been doing. Jenna is going to be more of a problem. We have to feed her more often because she doesn't eat as much per time. Just thought I'd update for anyone interested.

Wow, keep up the good work! It's great you pulled them so quickly and are keeping them warm and fed. Hopefully they'll start gaining some weight soon.

Are they able to spend any time with mom and dad? Just curious.

Update! I checked the babies this morning after my nap and we lost little Jenna. It is very hard for me to even think about this without crying so I probably will not mention it again. On the bright side, Little Jon Bear ate pretty well this morning and is still full of life. I really need to pull him through this.

To answer a question asked about time with parents. When Jon gets some fur I may reintroduce him to his parents, but only while supervising. Al and Jaz ate a baby already and I just want to give them some time before their next joeys.

Thanks for all of the words of encouragement everyone.

dlwalters, after pulling a baby, I would strongly recommend against trying to reintroduce him to his parents. After being hand few by you for so long and not having his parents scent marking him, he won't smell like his parents at all and they won't recognize him. If you try to reintroduce them, you run the risk of his parents attacking him. Even with you right there, it only takes a second for them to do fatal damage.

Leyna is right. I had to pull AnnaBear and handraise her (with help from Helen, Leyna, and Suz!). Her mother attacked and killed her twin, Romeo, and I was just too afraid to leave her with her mom. I handraised Anna from about three weeks (25 grams when I started). To this day, she and her mother do not get along.

Okay, now I know not to put him back. I do have a question about feeding. When it comes time for him to start eating normal glider food, how do I teach him to eat?

Thanks

[:"green"]You can gradually wean him over to regular food by mixing his formula a bit thicker by adding more baby cereal to it and introducing different flavors of baby food to the formula. More details about it are on my page about Hand Raising A Joey in the section about 6-8 week olds...

I want to thank everyone for hopes, prayers, and advice. We lost Little John Bear yesterday about 2 pm. For some reason he started shaking like he was having a seizure. We he stopped shaking he was acting normal again. I tucked him down into his pouch and when I checked on him about 15 minutes later he had passed. All 3 of Al and Jaz's joeys from their first litter have now passed. We did all we could, but it just wasn't enough. This is very tough, but I guess it is just something you have to deal with being a breeder.

Thanks again everyone and sorry I couldn't save them
