Newbs thinking about helping by rehoming. - 03/10/17 11:38 AM

Hi all. New to the forum, and possibly to bringing home a pair of gliders. We have been informing ourselves about gliders for a while now, and an opportunity has come up to adopt/rehome. So, just wanted to say hello and warn that we may be posting a lot of questions as things come up. The situation is thru someone else that we have found a younger person who is moving and needs to rehome two approx. 1 year old neutered males, along with their large cage, travel cage & pouches, and possessions, and some food items...this weekend! Other than to purchase fresh food, we already have a bonding tent (things read we may not need that for a few days/week) and we already lined up a nearby experienced small animal/exotic pet vet too. It won't be until 6pm (or later) on Sunday when we get them home (if all goes well) after a 2.5+ hour trip, and set up their cage and let them back in their home inside of our home. Any final words or wisdom, encouragement, etc.?

Please register when you have a chance so you can keep up with your progress and take full advantage of this website.

I'm glad you have done research, and there will always be queations. Gliders are very unique individuals and we have quite a few opinions, experiences and ideas to help you with your adventure with these wee ones.

Since you will have. A 2.5 hour trip, you might want to help them get used to your scent ASAP by tucking a couple of 4x4 inch cut fleece we call blankies.. . Either rub them on your skin or tosss in laundry hamper. Tuck them into their pouch on the way home. Let them sleep with them. Change out every few days. For their first few nights let them get used to the new sights and sounds and smell of their new home.

We would love to hear of your bonding progress and we love pics too!

Thanks for the tip...we did know about the fleece tucks, but didn't think about for the ride home. Great idea. We were hopeful that any re-homing would come with a cage/home to make transition easier, and knew that once we were interacting with them that the smells would be helpful, but didn't realize that it should be done so quickly. TY p.s. we registered but forgot to login when posting before, doh...most forums won't let you post without logging in.

Welcome to the forum! We would love to see pictures of your gliders as soon as you're able to take some and post. (In my experience, trying to capture gliders on film is no easy task!)

I got my two gliders as joeys in October of last year and only had a one-hour drive home, but they crabbed almost the entire way. Try not to be intimidated when they show you how big and scary they really are. wink Hopefully your two boys will be a little more mellow with age!

Kuddos to all the research you have done before bringing these gliders into your home. You have done very well knowing what to do in the first days.

The fleece with your scent will help them tremendously IF the cages you are getting with them are reasonably clean. Unless you know the person you are getting them from, you need to be prepared to receive the cages and pouches possibly in conditions you would never keep them in shakehead Not meaning to scare you. Just want you to be prepared as we have seen this happen all too often. Not everyone takes care of these wonderful little ones as they should.

Back to the fleece - you have a few days before you get the gliders, so you can even sleep with the fleece squares to make sure they get the full effect of your scent wink

As said, we heart pictures.

Glad to see you found us here and have done your research!

I think you have gotten great first suggestions, do the scenting fleece thing, this will help them acclimate to your scents.

Also, don't put expectations on these guys, I've learned from my past I tend to do this, actually just mentioned that in another forum, lol. Let them be them, and learn to trust you through your consistency and patience with them. Except them on their terms, they may have very different personalities and your relationship may grow quickly or slowly, maybe the same with each or different with each.

Read, read some more, and ask all the questions you feel you need to.

Congrats! I know the excitement, you may even feel a little nervous, this is normal. Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and suggestions. The pictures of the environment and cage look promising, and we've had a lot of conversations about the situation, but I imagine most things will need a good cleaning, but I don't want to rock the boat (their home) too much to start with so we will bring them home and then spend the next week+ getting things ship shape, if needed. We'll get some pictures posted as soon as we can too. TY p.s. and yes, nervous is a good word!

One side note about the fleece...we cut off some squares and had rubbed them on us a bit, and then put them with my sons pajamas (we plan to have him be the supervised lead bonding person for now) and planned to leave them there until we prepared to leave Sunday...but then I remembered something about chemicals on new material and had to do a simple hand wash and start over this evening with them clean and dry. Ooops.

If you have a family clothes hamper you can also throw the fleece pieces in there with laundry (prior to washing), or take turns overnight in your hampers or bed linens.

They can readily bond with several people, so don't feel like you need a lead bonding person. You can give them several pieces of fleece each scented by all of you & they'll get use to the whole family. After all, you'll just be one big (if funny looking) colony to them.

Re: Newbs thinking about helping by rehoming. - 03/12/17 03:39 PM

We kinda figured they would bond to the "family" but we want to make sure our son is the person responsible for the feeding, etc. and want to therefore get him started first and foremost so as not to overwhelm them. One of the suggies is friendly and the other is a little shy too, so that might present issues or opportunities. Anyway, we are leaving soon to go meet and greet and hopefully bring them home and start on the acclimation process. We will post pics as soon as possible. :thumb2:

Re: Newbs thinking about helping by rehoming. - 03/13/17 12:08 AM

We got them home about 2 hours ago and their cage reassembled...yeah! They are still in their pouch inside the open carrier, inside their cage, awaiting emergence.

They were awake quite a bit when we were loading the vehicle after tearing everything apart, and then slept the for 2.5 hour drive home. They did wake up for a few minutes when we got them in our home but went back to sleep and they have not been awake since.

We have water in their carrier for easy access, and water and fruit and food nearby outside of the carrier on the ground and upper level as well. So they might be tempted to pop out of their safe zone soon, we hope...it is going on dark here and the time zone change makes a bit later than their norm.

We really hope they take in some water soon though. Regards.

Yay! I'm looking forward to hearing more about them and seeing pics especially! What are their names?

Re: Newbs thinking about helping by rehoming. - 03/13/17 01:51 AM

They are out and about, Yeah...and took some treats from us thru the bars on our Critter Nation cage. Double Yeah. They named them Socks and Nike, but we are calling them Socks and Shoes (or Boots) depending on which one of us you are talking to. They don't seem care either way, LOL. Tried to take a couple pics but didn't come out too well thru the bars...we'll work on that as they get a little more relaxed over the next few days.

If you're worried about hydration, try giving them a little dish of pedialyte diluted with water, in addition to their plain water. The sweetness will encourage them to drink.

Looking forward to hearing more about these two! smile

They did eat some fresh raspberries last night so they did get fluids in a round about way there for sure. And we changed the watering device so I can mark a fill line and verify...although evaporation can factor in, but probably slowly.
