Extreme Opposites

Extreme Opposites - 05/26/14 03:21 AM

So I just recently brought home two babies as you know, but it's so crazy how different they are. One is extremely energetic and crabby, while the other is just super lethargic. I'm making progress with the crabby one as far as bonding but I know it will be a very slow process with that one. The lethargic one however literally slept today from 7am until 10pm when I woke them up (sorry I haven't been able to identify which is the boy or girl yet). When I woke them up at 10 I just reached my hand in the pouch and it just curled up in my hand and went back to sleep. I held them for a good 20 minutes and it just slept. Their ears aren't drooping, they're both eating, and drinking. Could their personalities just be that extremely different?

Just concerns me a bit. The energetic one plays all night while the other one kinda sits in the corner and plays occasionally. I just can't see them only being awake for like 9 hours and then sleeping the rest of the time. I've been taking them both out for at least an hour, if not more for tent time every night. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well the personality differences is normal, one could be more laid back. I'm not sure of their ages and sadly have no experience with joeys to know what is too lethargic to consider it a health issue.

Have they been for a check up and fecal tests yet?

They are 9 weeks OOP now. I haven't taken them to a vet yet. I do have one for them. Just wasn't sure I needed to take them in just yet.

It could be you have a pretty calm glider, or he/she may be more active when you're not around watching. As long as you keep an eye on eating and droppings. More likely the glider isn't really lethargic.

I do see them running around playing, it just takes him a long time to get moving. Even when he does get up and get going, he definitely doesn't seem to have the same energy as the other one. The other one runs on her wheel from the time she gets up till the time she goes to bed. While he, seems to hide in the corner and eventually comes out to play for a few hours.

As for eating, they can't seem to finish off between them a single bowl of 1 tbsp of BML, veggies, and fruits. I can only assume that will change soon and they will get more hungry?

That sounds like she is a more shy glider possibly, but can't really say for sure until you have them a little longer to see their personalities more. All gliders are different. My first pair we homed, one was much more social and friendly but still a little skittish at first. the other was super protective of the whole cage, lol, we thought she was just mean, but actually she was really scared.

I apologize for the odd picture, but does this look odd to anyone? I've noticed this in their drop pan since I've brought them home. This one however looks a bit darker /brown/reddish.

If that's urine from one or both of them, I would get BOTH their butts in to see a vet immediately. Their urine should be nearly clear/lightly tinged yellow.

Will do. Thank you Lisette. Unfortunately, my vet is closed cause of the holiday. I'll see if there are any emergency hospitals that can handle gliders.

I took them to the local animal hospital and of course they haven't had much experience with gliders. They ran no tests and couldn't tell which one it was coming from. They just gave me an antibiotic to give to both of them. I'm still taking them to their actual vet tomorrow. Should I start them on the antibiotics or risk another night of no medicine and get them to their vet tomorrow?

How are your little ones doing today? Did you get them to your regular vet today?

Update, my fiance took them to the vet while I was at work today. He said they were both perfectly fine. He checked teeth, ears, eyes, stool, palpitated their stomach and their was no signs of discomfort or anything that seemed out of the ordinary. He said the odd urine could have been caused by any number of factors; stress, still adjusting, new diet, etc. He said if there was a UTI there would be more symptoms.

On an odd note, he said they both have pouches... I have a boy and a girl... Not really sure what to make of this. He said the musk from the pee and the general smell of the boy pointed to all signs that he is in fact a boy. Plus he said if you look close enough you can see signs of a bald spot at his crown. Has anyone heard of this before? It's just too early to tell for sure because his testies haven't dropped yet. They are only 9 weeks old as well. Guess I'll just have to wait to find out for sure.
