New and in need of advice ! - 03/20/17 06:32 PM

Firs of all hi to all of you glider owners.
I'm writing from Europe, Bulgaria so please forgive any mistakes...
Gliders are rear to find in my country and after I read a lot i decided to try and get one. After a few weeks search found a breeder in my country who had a few and promised he can save one for me from the next birth...
Three months later i had little Mars delivered personally to my home from the breeder smile
Three months I waited read and watched videos but i somehow skipped the ones about their genitalia...
I know shame on me... but the last 24 hours I've punished myself enough and really if someone could say something useful i could i will be very grateful...
Yesterday evening we were playing as usual with the feather teaser and jumping and la la la and everything was perfect than he made a small caca and i was wiping his but when i saw 2 reddish things coming out ... you get where this is going ... and i feel like a stupid idiot but ... yes I thought he ate some of my red bracelet and that it's coming out so I pu.. well i puled it frown frown frown frown he made a sound so i let go but i think there has been some damage done and yes i was horrified and 2 minutes latter thanks to all-knowing google i was even more terrified reading about necrotic etc. etc.
For the last 24 hours he's male attributes have been sticking out and they look a bit damaged...
Now the worst part is no vet in my City ( i think in my Country also ) has any idea how to treat or what to do with Gliders... I called 2 today the first one said he never saw and best not to... second was curious and said he would like to see it because he never saw one.. frown and i don't want little Mars to be a test glider...
I will post a few pictures if any of you can give me a good suggestion please do so... i know i did something extremely stupid and i hurt the little one... i love him very much and don't know how i will forgive myself..
P.S.
He has no change in his attitude what so ever eats, drinks water, poops, pees but i don't want to stay and wait to see what will happen.
Hope someone with similar experience can suggest what to do..
I have some coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil and am looking for a tube of Vaseline that was here somewhere... what is best use to lube him, should i, or what should i do at all.
Thank you in advance!

It actually does not look too irritated or inflamed, which is good. I know many people often suggest to use KY Jelly to lubricate it, and if you do that. Please use a cotton swab to do so.

I would keep an eye on him, but not to the point he isn't able to sleep and more than likely it will go back in. If not, and you do not have a vet, it will eventually turn necrotic (only if it does not go back in) and fall off on its own. With that happening and not being on antibiotics, it runs the great risk of getting infected.

What do you use for human lubrication where you are from? Don't think baby oil is good as I have never seen it recommended here.

Vaseline, Durex lubricants, baby oil, coconut oil...

Googling the Durex lubricant, they have a water based/plain one that should be fine to use. I would not use any of the scented and definitely not the warming one. These are equivalent to our K-Y here in the States or appear to be.

Don't feel bad, most of us weren't aware that what their parts looked like at first either. blush

To be honest, it doesn't look like unhealthy tissue at the moment. If you can find a water-based lubricant, hopefully he'll be just fine. wink Realize that this is a normal part of puberty for male sugar gliders. As they go through their maturity stage, they will let things hang out. As long as it goes back in, then there is no issue.

My suggestion would be to keep an eye on things. If you notice it has gone in, then its most likely just puberty behavior. If it doesn't go back in, then you need to keep it lubricated to prevent it from drying out and becoming necrotic. If this continues, you'll need to find a vet that is willing to see/treat him; even if they don't have specific glider experience they do have experience with other animals.

Good luck and I hope its just him being a typical teenager!

Thanks for the update. If he isn't neutered you may want to consider that, it helps with them keeping their penis out all the time.

I'am thinking about it but the vet i contacted has never done it before so ... I'm not very sure if it's a good idea is there a video i could give him so he can see what is ment to happen or some kind of written instructions/description of the procedure?
Would be very helpful...
Thank you!

No, there isn't a video or written instructions, however, Here is a link to vets who will do telephone consults with other vets. You can print out the list and take it to your vet :thumb2:

I see you are in Bulgaria!
Hello from America!
Does your small animal vet speak English?
I know two Suggie vets here in the US that might be willing to a consult. Trying to get a phone connection to Bulgaria might be rough though...and the time difference will be an obstacle.
But I will bet we can get it done.
If you decide you want to do it.
We could set up a Skype connection or something.
